I stickied and renamed this thread. Also created a matching rants thread for negative --ahem, constructive criticism. Carry on.

For me its very simple: When they kill the issues like steering lag etc and when the Legends car pack DLC will be available, it will be my favorite racing game. Ever!

Never before have I been so drowned into a game. Even when its frustrating the hell out of me (like when city courses turn into demolition derbies) its still such a spectacular, intense, sometimes breathtaking experience and the athmosphere it creates is phenomenal. Winning races feels so satisfying, I pull a Becker-fist or Mr. Burns-gesture everytime.

I just love the mindstate of the developers behind this game - there are so many brilliant, creative and out-of-the-box-thoughts put into it, like autolog, track-mastering, the helmet cam, the little details like shaking wipers etc. The car and track selection is mostly great, too.

All in all, I see myself playing this game frequently for a very long time.

Have to agree with vast majority of comments on this thread. The game is a a plesant change from the sterile and very orderly procession of GT5. Please don't get me wrong, both games are strong in some areas and week in others. My preference at this stage is leaning towards S2, far more involving and at times scary. Some posts refered to the night racing on S2, this would have to be the most involved and evolved fearture of any driving console game at this time. I have been a veteran of driving games since I discovered GT1 while at uni. The many nights spent gaming since then have given me a firm base in knowing what is good and what is not. the GT series has been king for a long time, GT5 is still the most polished title outhere but it lacks the involvment required that S2 demands from the player.

The combination of helmet cam, good racing seat rig and the G27 steering wheel, makes for many an interesting evening in front of the screen. Yes, it takes some time to get the settings right but when you do, the fun never really stops. GT5 has a larger on line community that is true and when the mood takes I will go on line and have a hoot with my friends, random rooms tend to be full of clowns who really don't understand the concept of clean racing. Still to try the on line in S2 as the various in game modes are so much fun and really challenging. will get there when I complete the career mode and give it a go.

When i got my copy of GT5 on release day it did not get ejected until S2 arrived. Since then S2 has taken pernament residence in the Fat and I see no reason to go back to GT5 unless there is an update or I get an invitation to go and race GT5 with some buddies.

So, in short, if you want a sterile and non challenging AI to race against to make you look/feel good about yourself go the GT5 option. But if you really want to be challenged and remind yourself to breathe go the S2 option. It is far more involving and challenging. Just don't forget to adjust your tyre pressures, that I think is the most important setting in the game. At anything over 35psi the front end will float and cause some handling issues.

Most enjoyable car for me so far is the Alfa 8C

For me too. That car is amazing. I can throw it anywhere and it would never lose control. So much speed and grip coming out of the corners.
I used it for the time attack challenges and it annihilated the competition.

Things I like so far:

Night time races - the early group C ones, in a dark room, with headphones, using helmet cam, no HUD, no assists, with a wheel = total immersion.

Tough AI and exciting never-the-same-twice races.

A physics model that demands that you spend time working on the cars set-up and pay attention to how you drive.

The pumped-up graphics and sound.

The sense of ownership - you can make the cars yours in terms of how they look and drive.

The replay feature - slow motion and reverse!

The damage modelling - always exciting.

Autolog.

The Caterham 500.

How much it makes me laugh and smile.

Shift does better than GT5:

Damage modelling
Sound
AI
Career Mode
Replay controls
Autolog > Having a wall nobody posts on in GT5
Night Racing headlights
Car Customization
Racecraft

Pretty good game, I think.

Good post. Finally a newcomer to the site who has something positive to say about the new game in town. Even though I haven't played GT5 since late December, I too would consider returning with added DLC. But its been several months with nothing in sight. Out of the box, despite its glitches, S2U has given me the racing experience I expected from the newest installment of GT. There are far more issues plaguing GT5 than there is with S2U.

I raced in FIA GT3 for the first time night last and picked the sundown showdown (?) and raced at Bathurst. Wow. I know this game isnt perfect and there are lots of niggles that annoy me but that race, that race is the one that stopped me from trading it in. I came third but thats not the point, racing wheel to wheel across the top in darkness except for some headlights is one of the most visceral moments Ive experienced in a game for quite some time.

Wonderful, absolutely wonderful.

Yup, night time, helmet cam and steering wheel is the go. Gt5 cannot match that feeling of intensity while in A-spec. With the addition of a 7.1 surround sound headphones(and those are another story, how can a set of headphones replicate total surround sound is beyond me) turned up to 11, wow!

There is so little to complain about in S2, full package ready to go out of the box. *some tunning required*. And those that do complain about this or any other computer/console game of some currency will not ever be satisfied with anything short of the hollo deck on the NCC1701, which will be cool but still sometime away.

The next step is to switch to the Gt5 blog and announce that S2 is better, in most ways than Gt5, a game that I waited for for 6! years.

Thax frason.

I completely agree! I beat the GT3 races last night and started on the GT1's. I cannot commend SMS enough on the AI, it's seriously some of the best I've played against. They race you so close and competitive, yet don't just barge right into you like in 1. They try to avoid contact, and yet will dart in the smallest of windows if you make a mistake.

The GT1 races are some of the best racing I've had in long time. GT1s on Zolder at dusk, just delightful. Intense, but plastered a grin on my face all night.

I love this game.

Hi all, i'm very close to buying this game after reading some of the posts in this thread and it seems to me that instead of comparing it to gt5 and forza would grid be a more comparable game in the way it is set out and the way the driving physics are ?

Grid! Actually, Grid was one of my favorites a couple years ago - loved the damage model and graphically was pretty good. Recently I picked up a wheel (DFGT), after being drawn back into racing games by GT5 and Shift 2, and thought I would give Grid another go of it. What's going on... this isn't the Grid I remembered...
Long story short, Shift 2 is light years ahead of Grid. I don't know if I can draw a comparison to anything else. If you like "racing" games, Shift 2 stands alone in presentation, depth, unique features, and most importantly fun!

I bought the game last night on the way home from work. The first few minutes were a pain getting accustomed to a different feel. Once I got past that, it was all good from there.

I race using a PS3 and a G25 mounted to an Obutto Playseat. I bought an MX-5 with my starting cash so I would have a RWD car to race (not a FWD fan). It's underpowered in the D-class but that's ok. The door-to-door racing I got from the AI more than made up for the fact that I couldn't place higher than 5th at Laguna Seca in a Quick Race with my car upgraded to 493PP.

It was like other writers have said, the AI does a pretty good job of staying off of you if you show some regard for their line. But, if you dive in front of them you could get turned if they don't have enough time to slow down first. Good stuff!

In the tuning, tires pressure. how do you know if its 35psi or not? so if the tire pressure slider said 50, is that 50psi?

I still don't know if those values are psi because I don't know where a possible 70/80? psi are useful in normal road cars...

Anyway, I went back yesterday to make the initial events again (Damn AUTOLOG :D)

One of the events I did was the dreadful Invitational where you win the Lotus Exige S. I remembered a boat but is was so easy this time. I even beat the 1:32 lap time :D I did the event 3 times with reboot in between just to make sure it wasn't a bug or something 💡

All this to say that on really needs to learn how to drive properly in this game. Setup your wheel to your taste and if you don't have one go buy it, NOW - can't recommend G27 enough - and do like racers do aka BE SMOOTH...

I understand it takes time after play GT for so long (it took me a bit of time) but this game its awesome after on embrace its nature and the reward is pure fun.

:tup SMS 👍

Good point, I just assumed psi. Still, lower values seem to make the cars respond better under cornering and seem to steady out while at speed. This is only an observation made, after too many hours in the rig. Than again Renown Tunning would set tyre pressures on the 190e Evolution at above 40 whatevers. So each to their own.

Half the fun of this game is working out what works and what does not. As a suggestion may I recommend the BMW evolution, that red one, with pressures set at 32 front and 34 rear and only mod being the racing tyre. Imo, the best handling thing I have found to date.

I've sold my Miata upgrades to free up cash to upgrade my S15. I'm only at about 5% career completion so far but am really enjoying the racing action. My favorite part of racing this game is the door to door situations through the turns. Having to figure out the gear selection and braking points for the turns is really rewarding as I've been able to turn last place finishes into race wins by spending time getting my racing line corrected. Meanwhile, the AI is constantly stalking my rear bumper looking for an opening. Nicely done SMS!

It was at Donington Park where i did almost a full lap door to door with the AI. It was a first in all the racing games i've played.

He had the inside line on the chicane but applied the brakes too soon so I got to the finish line first (but not in 1st position).

It was the most intense race i've ever had. Were it done by night it would've been epic

Great game.

I've go a S15 that is at C999(I think that is C)and it's a blast to drive.I ended up beating one of my older autolog times which was an Impreza.

I too enjoy the door to door racing.Sometimes i'll find myself in second place for 2 laps sitting behind the leader and studying his moves. Then when the time is right i pounce and take first and win the race.Man i love this game :)

Seems this thread doesn't get as much love as the rant thread :)

Anyway, a quick rave about the DLC ( and yes, I hope ps3 gets it soon, and pc owners too)

Great addition, new cars which all seem to handle great, lovely tracks, and also rare for dlc... It's also integrated into the career line - thanks SMS, this is what dlc should be :)

I just discovered the "Manufacturer Showdown" events. Superfun stuff!! And they will be even more fun when the Autolog is back online --> to go back and try to beat friends' times with identical cars is going to be an awesome challenge.

I know :mischievous:

I just downloaded the LE content and the Legends Pack. I've just driven the S30Z and the Hakosuka.

Gonna change my pants now.

The level of awesomeness of this game keeps going through the roof. Now that the PSN is down and I can't chase Autolog times, I've resumed going through the career events.

Wow! There's just so much fun stuff to do. Right now I'm totally hooked on the Manufacturer Showdowns, Single Type races and Old vs. New events.

These guys know how to bring the fun into a racing game by being creative with career events. Kaz: take note and learn.

This game deserves a lot more credit than it is getting. I really hope EA will pursue this path of NfS and make sequels!

+1 :)

And now having the patch installed on PC, I'm getting better performance, no cars sticking to walls/cars, fixed FFB and no lag so Shift 2 is pretty much 10/10 for me now :)

I now find the following logitech profiler settings work just fine:
Spring/strength/damper 100%
No centering spring
900 deg steering
no combined pedals
Allow game to change settings
The game does a good job now of making the FFB feel right.

Im on the PS3 and I just got my Samsung LCD (24 - 1080p) back from warantee fixing and I must say that the game is awesome. Looks great, feels great (after the patch) and Ill be definitly selling my copy of GT5. Now Im just waiting for PSN to be back online for 1.02 and DLC. :D :D :D

Im really glad I decided to get it for the PS3 the game is briliant with the DFGT, Im just very sorry I didnt get the Limited Edition :(

I can't believe I almost didn't buy this game. I had read a lot of nay-saying about the physics and handling being unrealistic/floaty that almost stopped me from shelling out the $60 on it.

Let me start of by saying that I am a die hard racing sim fan going back to the days of Nascar 1 back in '94 and have just about raced them all, and I am a stickler for realism.

I race with a Logitech DFGT wheel, recently upgraded from my Logitech Momo, and what a difference. On that note, If you are having problems with the force feedback going away after one race on your Logitech wheel, you must read paul's post here: http://https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=196575&page=8

I was extremely frustrated with the handling until I applied the fix, and now I couldn't be happier. The physics in this game IMO are at least as good as those in GT5. And with the DFGT wheel with 900 degrees rotation, it is a blast to drive.

I find the immersion of the game to be absolutely top notch. The sounds of each vehicle are spectacular, as you can hear the high-pitched whine of the turbos, to the low growls of your V8, rumble stips, unspent fuel being burned off, ruble from the road being kicked up on the bottom of the car, it's just incredible. I race with the traditional cockpit view, I do love the helmet cam but I can't seem to roll out of the exit of turns properly when the view is changing, I always feel like I'm about to spin out. The sense of speed is very realistic when you combine the sounds, handling and view. It's just a great experience.

I find the AI to be very good. I race on elite handling and hard AI. It's nice to have a challenging race every single race, with the exception of the endurance races, as I will normally break out at about lap 8. The pack normally stays pretty close, so you don't get the runaway 1 or 2 cars that you get in GT5. They will give you room on the track, but also challenge you in to a turn, trying to outbreak you when they get the chance, or take a blocking line in to turns. Don't be surprised if you get a tap in the back if you are a little too conservative braking in to a turn. The GT1 events are very tough, as you nearly have to race a perfect race to win, or to even finish in the top 3.

Some of my favorite moments have been taking class D or C cars on Nurburgring or Bathurst, as some of the turns are great with the DFGT on 900 rotation. You really have to throw the wheel around and feeling the wheel naturally return to center exiting corners feels very realistic. Finding the right rhythm on Nurburgring can be a blast and a truly rewarding experience. But get it wrong and you'll find yourself spinning like a top, or rolling over and over.

If there is anyone out there who comes across this post and is still undecided on whether or not to buy it, do yourself a favor and do. I am addicted, and I can honestly say that this will be my go-to racer from here on out. I will still use GT5 when I want a nice sunday drive, but I've got to hand it to SM Studios. GT and Forza better watch out, because there is a new slugger in town.
