Ongoing PSN outages

We all own the console none of us has exclusive rights to the software or firmware. That belongs exclusively to sony and they lease it to us so long as we abide by the terms of use contract.

It's been well over 24 hours, I think it's at 36 hours now. But that's of getting the error code. I've been getting the 'Play Station Network is under maintenance' for 13 hours now.

Yes, I have no life at all and I check hourly. Whatcha gonna do? :D

Sony just needs to reset their router and clear their system cache.

Saw it on an episode of South Park. Just unplug, and plug back in the damn thing so we can have our interwebs back.

Nice. I just about spit my diet Dr. Pepper out through my nose when I read that... ;)

This is why I need to finish building my computer and get back into pc gaming. No one's going to knock out THE INTERNET over a political issue.

Barring natural disaster. :)

Just imagine the collateral effect if the internet "crashed" for several days.

What would our species do? As so many of us rely heavily on the leisure aspect of it and even we use it for factual information and colleges, businesses, I just couldn't imagine what people would do.

what have you been doing while psn is down???

haha mostly just watching netflix and reading for class. And of course checking the forums on my netbook like a madman to see if PSN is done being lame.

Yeah it's kind of scary think about banking and stuff like that. I often wonder what would happen if a solar flare knocked out technology on Earth, what about all the stuff on harddrives for which there is no physical copy? Sorry not to get all philosophical. This is what happens when PSN is down! :)

Anyone have a link for anons website? if they have a site that is.

I just tried Google and all i keep getting is the definition of the word and such.

Thanks!

4chan and irc is the best way to get the real skinny on whats going on... If you dont know what that is, dont go there because you are asking for trouble among other things.
Actually, I shouldnt be quite so grim... 4chan takes pride in anonimizing its users. Anon has a facebook page that is used by the PR wing of the movement, which as far as I can tell was basically created for situations like this and to be able to pass its various motivations and plans to the press in a way that is decipherable to the Obscenely lazy and gluttenous main stream press that find the various pictures and comments on 4chan too distasteful and/or hard to follow for said lazy journos.
I will leave it at this ANoN is a movement, not a group. Its motivations are not homogenous or easy to follow even if you know and understand the devices they employ and what you are looking at as it were. In fact the only thing that seems to bind the group together besides 4chan is their de-centeralization and motivation to "stick up for the oppressed, when ever they see it."

I remember when I didn't have internet at my house for a week.. I basically never came home. :D

Exactly! The internet is a great source for information and such but it is not a resource and to think you, I, and everyone who uses it - are reliant on this world wide web for so much as it may very well be considered a resource..though we do not NEED it to survive physically but so much personal information is on here..it's crazy!

and hahaha, yes mate! These little noggins start thinking outside of the box

Cheers

You seem to be pretty serious over a game.

The issues behind this is Sony is attempting to regulate more and more what can and cannot run on a device you own. Apple has been fighting the same battle with the legality of jailbreaking and the iPhone, and it has been very stupid. Current companies feel they can tell you how to use a device you purchase from them, even if it isn't on their network. Would be much like buying a car and them telling you cannot put anything else on it at all period. What so ever.

Anon is coming from a relatively sane position.

Actually you explain it so wrong....Sony doesn't care if you jailbreak PS3 it's the Fact that people then get on PSN and cheat. If it's not the Issue why are the Jailbreakers so pissed Sony RemoveD linux when clearly all you had to do was not update and never return to PSN? You would have Kept Linux, Plus no PSN. But No people kept cheating so Sony made people choose.

I've been affected by this little PSN mix-up aswell. It does really cheese me off I can't play online with my friends, but I don't mind at the same time, I can survive without online gaming :P

Saying that this is Sony's fault is about as logically correct as blaming someone for your own actions. Legally, unless they are doing something that is illegal that you are committing your own illegal act to stop, and their illegal act has to be current or imminent (less than a few seconds typically). Otherwise you're just committing a illegal act. That's the end of it. Anon is straight in the wrong. They are currently using what they think is an effective tool but is instead it's akin to using a steam roller to hammer a nail.

IMHO: We should all blame this guy,

Sony's handling of this issue has been worse than pathetic. close to 48 hours, no information from them. Apart from vague, meaningless messages. It's unacceptable.

Who says they HAVE to tell you anything?

Just be patient and wait it out. Not like your life depends on it.

Thanks for the advice yoda. Sony has 800,000 followers on twitter and 70+ Million PSN customers, but according to you, they don't owe them any explanation. Ok, you may be happy with that, I am unsatisfied and justifiably so. Just because your happy and willing to be kept in the dark doesn't mean others have to be.

You're right, they don't have to tell us anything. However, the best practice in public relations damage control is to tell the public as much as you can, as often as you can.

Day-and-a-half old blog posts that say, basically, "Yes, the network is down" are next to useless. Twitter feeds, with hundreds of thousands of followers, that haven't been updated in a day or more don't help.

If it is a DDoS attack, say so. Tell us that they've engaged XYZ Corp, the renowned DDoS fighters, to resolve the problem.

If it's hardware - a fire in a data centre, lightning, a comet, whatever - say so. Tell us that ABC Corp, the data centre experts, are on the case.

If it's a network software issue, tell us how they're working to restore the system from a known good backup.

They don't need to give us every detail. They don't need to update us minute-by-minute. They don't need to pull someone off the tools, so to speak, to update Twitter. They do need to tell their ~70,000,000 paid and unpaid subscribers what happened, what is being done, and when they expect a return to service.

An outage such as this damages their brand and their reputation, whether it's Sony's fault or due to outside factors. That is water under the bridge. The damage done to their reputation, and the lack of respect they demonstrate for their customers, is totally by choice.

It seems evident Sony does not give a rat's behind for their customers.
