Exacly. Register 12 you get 7 or 8 most of the time. If we wanted 12 we'd have to register 16+. If you only register 8 you might only get 4 or 5...and likely 1 or 2 of them might drop because of a lack of drivers making it not so much fun.
Yeah there's definitely a psychology here... which I'm not sure I can explain... or even understand. But there's something to this.
Like somehow when I make a thread for a race. I'll get 1-2 sign ups, then the odd person signing up because they like the idea. Then suddenly once there's 5 people signed up, then there's a sudden influx of sign-ups.
It's the same thing with my Lo PP Shuffle - in the pub lobby.
I have a core few friends who I msg, and we get together & start racing. There'll be 5 of us for several races. Then 2 more people will show up. Within 10 minutes after that, we're at near full capacity.
A couple of my pals will joke that when that sudden influx of joins happens, that some other shuffle lobby had just went in the toilet after the host kowtowed to demands to up the PP, or allowed SSR7 to get voted as the track.
While it's true, that sometimes several people who know each other follow each other out of a bad shuffle lobby to another one and then talk about how the other room went to the dogs.
But really, I think it's just that there's some self-perpetuating myth about popularity.
I think I read about a scientific study on that recently. Or maybe it was on the radio. That in a blind control group study... If people saw that others had rated some crap mp3 downloadable song as "good"... it got rated better by everyone than if people were not given anybody else's ratings. In the experiment, the "ratings" were fake and random. But it still worked.
People were really digging the crappy songs that were given fake high ratings.
Anyway, having worked in marketing & advertising, I've learned that a lot of human psychology is kind of stupid! And I don't like it always. But if you can use it for good & not evil, then best go with the flow and not try to fight it.
(Not that I'm suggesting adding T&A to the Oval Series logo or anything... Though, that probably wouldn't hurt.
JUST KIDDING!!!)
