I don't think they'll be unveiling any hardware on the 20th personally.

Knowing Sony it will be half an hour of statistics on how well the PS2 has sold then like a 10 min flashy next gen game vid with no console in sight

Everyone knows that the real place to go for Sony hardware announcements is the Chinese factories that leak the designs months in advance.

Here's another pic from Gizmodo, but again, could be nothing.

That's not mic, It's speaker. Mic would be one hole. No need to be used mic lots of hole on it.

Good point PZ. However, is a speaker really required on a controller? Ah I don't know. I've a habit of being wrong!

20 Feb...

Sorry I'll clarify, I think they'll unveil the PS4 as a system but I don't think we'll physically see any hardware.

They have to show something at E3. I think that the hardware will come then.

It will boil down to these four events:

Feb. 20: PS4 announcement

E3: Preliminary hardware is shown, Launch titles announced; US release date(?)

Gamescom: Footage of launch titles shown; PAL release date(?)

TGS: Second verse, same as the first; Final hardware is shown; Japan release date.

Yes that is basically what I was thinking. This event on the 20th will just establish that it exists and go through the tech with some demos. The full reveal will be E3 and beyond.

You know that after I posted that, MS might have an easier time since they don't have to announce first. It all boils down to who gets to the market first, and because Sony has their foot up their butts about announcing last, MS can take all day and still get to market relatively quickly because 720 and PS4 share the same hardware.

I would think if they were going to go through the trouble of making their own news expo that they would at least show the controller or the system itself (subject to change), like they did with the PS3 at E3 2005 (though obviously not with that much time between showing it off and release). All of this work just to say "yeah, it's coming," while certainly something that wouldn't surprise me for Sony to do and think it was a brilliant idea, seems a bit over the top.

Yeah, the thing is, investors usually want to see what the physical-looks of the product will look like, as in any other presentation of new products or services. If not the console itself, I'm confident the controller will at least be shown, as did the Wii U reveal.

Personally, I think they will show the PS4, as they did with the PS3 in 2005. Then at E3, they'll show the finalized version with minor changes like ports and such.

If that's genuine the grips look even shorter than the current ones, it needs to be the other way around.

From the looks based on the gap distance between the analogue sticks it looks wider so they could be about the same length.

I'm very happy they are using he Vita style d-pad, its amazing for fighting games. They should be clicky instead of mushy .

Wonder what the final design will look like.

Never would've happened anyway. I'm not a fan of the prototype, although it's just that: a prototype. We'll probably see more refinements to come.

I'm hoping the 'handles' on the controller are MUCH thicker so my long digits are more comfortable. I found myself buying more 360 non-exclusive titles (madden, portal, etc.) just because I've outgrown the dual shock and it hurts my hands a little after hours of use. No issue whatsoever on the 360 (granted, I heard that controller won't work on the new system). So I'm slightly excited about this new controller, probably until I see it's $99 *eyeroll*

If the new controller still has round "trigger" buttons for L2/R2, SONY is truly beyond STUPID!!!! I'm getting tired of my Real Triggers popping off almost every time my DS3 accidentally hits the floor from falling off the chair or table or something.

This pic of what is said to be a new playstation controller prototype design is floating around with what could be an early/present dev kit. It could be nothing, but thought I'd share.

I hope it doesnt break easily because i rage quit a lot.

It is actually a pretty huge issue regarding the touch screen and how fragile it will be when thrown on the ground, just count how many times you dropped or thrown your controllers on the floor

I figured they can try to put the touch pad on the back side of the controller.

Wonder what the final product will look like.

That's what I was thinking, not quite sure why they'd put it on the front when the Vita has one on the back. Also, how are you supposed to use the touchpad along with the buttons if it's on the front? I think that would limit the usefulness a little. The touchpad aiming in the Uncharted for the Vita worked quite well, I thought.

Not that it matters anyway, only exclusives will use it.

Overall a very subtle change. Those that like the PS2 and PS3 controllers will have no time with these. Only a few more days and we get to see the big announcement. :)

I am still very concerned about not being able to play or sell used games. Hopefully we can at least rent digital copies of games.
