Sorry but I have to disagree on both counts.

I currently pay for both XBL and PS Plus and don't have a problem doing so for either.

XBL is, from my own experience, a more stable platform than PSN with much quicker integration (simple things like the speed friends lists and trophy/achievement info syncs), and given the price you pay if you shop around I find it worth it.

Plus has certainly offered me plenty of value for money, hell in the last few months alone Batman AC, Sleeping Dogs and Bioshock 2 alone have been worth the annual cost.

This next generation sees an interesting position for myself, as I've always (for three generations) been a 'Playstation at day one' guy. A choice that has been driven by GT for the last two generations. However this time around I am genuinely torn between the two (MS and Sony) a position that I find actually rather nice.

However if one locks used games out then its straight off my list, if both do its time to start looking at PC's (or just throw the money at more guitars).

I'm right there with you buddy. I don't have the PS Plus, but if I had to pay to play GT6 online and I'd keep both my XBL and PSPlus accounts active.

But honestly, the controller comfort is going to decide which console I primarily get multi-platform games on. I'm hoping the new PS4 controller is a bit more bulkier to better suit my lanky fingers like the 360 does now.

I've heard ps3 overtook te 360 in global sales a while back.. I'll try find some sources..
I think PS has many great selling points over xbox.
Free online
Far better exclusives (debatable I suppose)
blu ray
3D
For me the exclusives are most important, I just hope for GT to get back on top of the racing exclusives. I know for sure I'm choosing ps4.. for the games. Even if we have to pay for online and xbox gets blu ray.. PS will always have better exclusives in my opinion.
Ok, it seems the xbox was leading at first (Could be due to earlier release, lower price) But now the ps3 has caught up. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/11/16/sony_celebrates_70_million_playstation_sales/
That helps prove my point. Sony didnt catch up to the 360 in sales until 2012. Now imagine if the 360 had Blu Ray. The sales wouldnt even be close. Thats even with the 360 having a massive and true bad rep about being a very unreliable console. Very true especially the RROD. Even with all the problems and failure rate, it still was ahead of the PS3 in sales until 2012.
BTW many dont know but the 360 also has 3D. Some examples: Gears Of War 3, Halo CE Anniversary, Crysis 1, Black Ops 2, and many more.
As for exclusives, yes thats debatable. I think there are a lot better exclusives on the 360 but thats just my opinion.
If the Durango/ Infinity truly comes out with blu ray, its going to outsell the Orbis for sure.

I don't think blu ray would make a lot of difference, xbox had 11 months longer and was cheaper, in my opinion that's the only reason it was ahead for so long.

I don't want to start anything, I will just quote someone from the IGN forums, maybe it's completely WRONG, here you go:
" Square reps, MGS Phantom Pain teaser dates, Battlefied 4, Watch Dogs, Gran Turismo 6, Sony Santa Monica & Bungie and more all scheduled to show for the presser today. Sony bringing out the big guns "
Sounds great if true, the PS3 announcement was dull beyond belief, this I hope will be more entertaining.

I don't believe sony will charge for online, that would be the worst decision ever, PS+ is an awesome deal, if they can keep it like that and add more options I don't see why people won't subscribe
The issue with bringing PS+ to the PS4 is what games do you include with the subscription?

The only option realistically would be PS3 titles (via streaming if rumours are correct), because its not going to be PS4 titles for a good while after launch.

I can of course only speak for myself, but I bought a PS3 at launch over a 360 mainly because of past history (so brand loyalty - never rule that one out) and the Blu-ray player (I'm an AV fan and its was the best entry point at he time).

Exclusives for me would only have been GT (and GT5 has put that on the back burner for me - that however is another thread), now could well be Killzone and Uncharted, but both of those are unlikely to be a deciding factor). Exclusives are slowly becoming a thing of the past these days, certainly as far as a console purchase goes.

3D - well they both do that and its star seems to be falling rather quickly.

Now at the time the PS3 came out the free net access was a big draw, but experience with both (including PS+) has made that far less of an issue. Simply put I am happy to pay for a service that is worth it. So if Sony keep it free then great, but if they do want to charge for it then they need to justify it and not just in features.

The ONLY way I see live going free is if Sony somehow impliments an 8 party chat system similar to what xboxlive has AND allow people to communicate while all in different games. Thats the ONLY way PSN is going to even come close to xboxlive. The communication options in live are years and years ahead of PSN. Not even comparable. I would truly LOVE to see PS4 come out with a FREE 8 player party chat system. If PS4 can pull that off then they might have a chance at getting microsoft into creating a free online experience. But you can guarantee that if ms makes the online system free, there will be consequences. Prices will raise for other things, more micromanagement. Also xboxlive has never been hacked so if it went free, who knows what would happen. I personally would not want xboxlive free because I know they would charge for something else to make up the difference. Maybe paid microtransactions. I guess we will see. There are a lot of other benefits to being a gold member that silver members dont get access too. Free betas, free demos and much more.

http://kotaku.com/5873604/is-microsofts-xbox-live-hacking-problem-worse-than-microsoft-realises

Hoping for a fee-based service is not the best option. A better option would be hoping for a better free service. And no, just because a service costs money doesn't mean it's inherently better than a free service.

Ok. I didn't know xbox had 3D. But I don't think xbox will outsell ps4 if the ps4 is released first at a more competitive price than the ps3s launch price, considering the ps3 has been doing better recently with the lower price of the super slim. Also, by the way, The sales numbers from the site I read were going by number of units shipped, so the whole rrod situation would give the 360 an advantage in this case.

This is what I hope will happen tonight:
iOGGV4w60DpGY.gif

Sony should get the big guns out. A powerful console and powerful games with it. There are so many things they can make up this time.

Like:
- lower cost for the console
- cross-gaming chat
- etc.

But what Sony is probably end up doing:
ibcTBO6YgrI3aD.gif

The thing is that they didnt just screwed up with one product in the past. No, they had failures with the PS3, PSP, PSP GO and PS Vita. Great products, but most of the time with the wrong price, at the wrong time or fails in marketing.

Things they can screw up tonight:
- "and the price is .......... 599 €"
- no used games playable
- permanent internet connection
- talking about the playstation heritage and how well the last gen did
- just trailer compilations
- fake gameplay videos like on E3 2005

Please Sony, dont mess it up again. Thank you.

That's actually what I'm expecting to see today, plus a look at the actual console and controller and the final specs.

No playable used games really would kill me inside. That would be a massive disappointment. :indiff:
Hopefully if they go that route we can still somehow rent games. Even if its a digital download rental similar to renting movies online.

Found this and found it amusing. I dont agree with the end of the video but the rest was entertaining.

Cheers for the streams

Not keen on paying for online but my situatiuon is a lot different. On my xbox 360, all I want to do is set the odd time trial lap or download a livery. £30 a year just for the odd time isn't worth it and just excludes me from the games features or means I just boot up my pc. For those who play COD/halo each weekend or night or use voice chat I'm sure its great. Would like some free time/data limit each month. With MS its all or nothing.

The presentation will be shown within P.S. Home as well as several websites. does anyone have any insight as to which option would be best for viewing with a PS3?

I've had bad luck streaming these things in the past.

And if that was all XBL was about you might have a point, but its not.
Its main feature, the Gold subription literally just enables you to do what is on most platforms free to do. What does Gold do so much better than what they do on PC for free?

Based on the evidence we have available one has been shown to be more secure than the other, while that may change in the future all we have is the history of the past issues with PSN. Do not underestimate the potential impact that had for many on the PSN network.

Sony may we have made PSN more secure than XBL now, that unfortunately came at a massive cost (both financial and non-financial) to them.
The big impact was the downtime and the faith in the company. I am confident that Sony must have put a lot of effort to make it much more secure now and others must have learned lessons from it too so better security all aound.

However as you say you would pay, maybe not all the time, but you would still pay.

In my opinion most would complain quite a bit about it (the threads here I can already picture), then they would accept it and the vast majority would pay and within a short period of time most would then justify it to themselves as well.
I still doubt they will charge but if they did charge I guess they will put a lot more value than what Microsoft is currently doing so it won't be as bad a deal.
There will be still likely be quite a bit of a hit on total number of users gaming online. Sure most would start paying for it as long as it is not some extreme cost in the end.

To be blunt why should it be free? Both Sony and MS have to set-up and manage server arrays to handle just the cloud storage side of things, those activities have both a one-time cost and re-occurring cost to them, why should they just give it away?
Given the amount of cloud storage you can get for free and features on the web, I don't see why you won't get a small amount of storage for free in future. PC games do it free to an extent.
Do you pay for them over and above you XBL membership? No.

I pay for my XBL for the on-line gaming, the access to the other functionality (such as Facebook, IE, Lovefilm, etc.) is simply a bonus. If that was all I was paying to access you would have a very valid point, but its not.
You are still paying for stuff that vast majority of its features are free on other platforms.
That hasn't happened to date and currently shows no sign of happening. Sony would first have to offer a service that matches or exceed XBL in every way (and as I have said not just features), then offer it for free and then steal significant sales from MS.

To put in in a personal perspective, my first console of this gen was a PS3, even with the free on-line I bought a 360 and pay for XBL (years after I got my PS3). The reason? Simply because as things stand right now its worth it for a more secure and stable platform.
Why does Microsoft not charge to use its Live platform on Windows then? They have admitted competition on this doesn't really allow them too. Sony don't have to exceed what Microsoft are, just offer the same level of features and you will see most likely a lot more people going to Sony.
It is worth it for you currently I understand, and that is why they have been able to get away with it for so long but given the margin between PS3 and 360 currrently, imagine when majority of advantages are free now on their rival platform. Microsoft were lucky in that Sony never took them serious enough so never saved space in Game OS for the extra features that 360 XBL Gold users can get but with most likely PS4, they will have a very capable, highly integrated online platform from the get go. It will be less compelling for current 360 users to have to pay for a similar service again if in feature set offers no standing out feature. Worse still if Sony exceeds everything XBL Gold does and does it all for free.

That helps prove my point. Sony didnt catch up to the 360 in sales until 2012. Now imagine if the 360 had Blu Ray. The sales wouldnt even be close. It is not as simple as that. 360 would have been released similar time as PS3 and would also cost more if it did have Blu-ray. RROD should have also helped in sales department like YLOD so it is not one way only.

At the moment, going by rumours even with next Xbox most likely having Blu-ray drive, I think it will be going back to Xbox 1 levels of success and highly successful period for Sony. I wouldn't put it past Microsoft given what I have seen of Windows 8 regarding design.

It will be interesting to see today what will most likely shape the rest of this decade in regards to gaming.

I don't think much will stop me from buying the PS4. If it doesn't have backwards compatibility then I will keep my PS3, very simple solution.
Price isn't a worry either, as long as it's not £1000 or higher I will most likely buy it.
If I have to pay for online, again I'm not that bothered. If they do introduce this then the price would be similar to that of XBOX Live.
I won't of course buy it no matter what, it needs to be a big step forward from the PS3.

And while I'm here why haven't us Brits got the PSN voucher? I presume it was given out to coincide with this, seems like only those in the USA have it.

Most likely yes, it would be a pain in the ass don't get me wrong but not a deal breaker for me. The games I buy most of my friends will get anyway, and I rarely buy used games.

But that was also a rumour prior to the PS3 release I think, and it turned out to be BS.

I'm amazed some people will actually defend XBOX Live. Yes, it has more features, and a better looking store. But playing online is no different than PSN. I wouldn't have a problem if MS charged for the extra features, but charging people to get the most out of their games, is just greedy. People should have enough backbone to do something about this, but this is not the case with gamers I guess.

I'll take free online gaming anyday, and hope Sony keeps it for PS4. I really don't want to "pay to play online" (like Xbox does), NO thank you...

The PlayStation marketing department should have been fired 5 years ago. Either they are awful or SONY has a very small budget for it. Sure there are commercials. Product placement speaks louder than commercials. It makes me want to throw up every time I see that other console being used in a movie or TV show, knowing SONY refuses to spend money to sell their product!!!

If you dont think it is any different playing online with xboxlive compared to PSN then you havent been on xboxlive very long. Its overall a much better experience. If you play the same game on the 360 and then play the same game on the PS3, you will get disconected and see many more issues on the PSN. You truly get what you pay for. Especially when it comes to the online communication. The 8 player party chat is one of the best additions to online gaming. All 8 players can be in different games or even the dashboard and still communicate with each other. Besides, $2.66 a month is not bad at all for such an amazing online experience. This is coming from someone that was a massive PS fan and had no interrest in the xbox at all. But you truly get what you pay for on live. Sorry if you disagree. I guess it all depends on what you use live for. 99% of my gaming is online and I am ALWAYS in a party chat even if I am not playing the same game as the people in my party.

If someone didnt use the party chat or didnt play online much then no xboxlive would not be worth it to them. But for someone like myself that lives online, xboxlive is the best option out there.

Hey there buddy...

Just wanted to show you this:

I have an XBOX, with LIVE... I don't "defend" it... but, you get what you pay for.

I think PS+ is great, though. For the features... I would say it is superior... for online play... definitely not.

Aye. Here comes the arguement from someone who's trying to justify the price of Live. Except games with really poor online coding (RE5 etc.) I've never experienced any problems with playong online on PSN. It's every bit as stable as Live, just without the extra features. When you get DQ's from GT5 for an example, it's not due to PSN, but rather it's PD's less than perfect game. Online chat is indeed better on Live, but it's not directly related to playing games online. And it certainly isn't worth paying for. Espicially not when you can get this for completely free on a PC.

Why do you think the 360 is the only platform that forces you to pay in order to play online? It's not better than a PS3 when it comes to playing games, and it's lightyears behind online PC gaming. You can keep trying to justify throwing money at something that should be free (and is free on all other platforms). Just know that as long as you support it, it will never change for the better.

Then there's those who say that the 360 offer better security, and points to the hacking of PSN. I will bet you all I have that such a hacking could be done to the 360 as well. Nothing is safe from hacking. As history has shown.

Hey there buddy...

Just wanted to show you this:

If I were to guess, I'd say that was Crysis 3 or The Last of Us.

Crysis 3.

Come on now. The Last of Us? lol! Won't look anywhere close to that.

That is an in-game screen shot. No fancy editing, no pre-rendered E3 demo, no dev version.

But what's your point? I've always said the PC was capable of superior graphics. All I ever said was that the difference isn't as big as some of you like to say it is. And I stand by that comment. Crytek knows how to make games look good. That they seem to have lost the ability to make games that are fun and innovative as well, is another discussion. And once again, you're comparing a completely new game designed for current high-end hardware, to something designed to run on 6-7 year old hardware. If the difference wasn't noticeable to some degree, I'd say there was something wrong.

If they release GT6 + PS4 at the same time, then it's a deal for me and I'll most likely buy it no matter what the price or the features of the new playstation is.

But if PS4's price is set too high (over 400), then I'll probably hold off on it for a while.

snipped because you write novels.

You brought up Last of Us.... not me.

I think most people will....

I am certainly not buying the hardware without enough console / Sony exclusives to support it.
