Porsche will not be in GT5

They can't do that. EA cannot tell Porsche where and when to license their cars and to whom.

Why does everyone think that EA own Porsche?!

EA owns the license for Porsche, so yes they do say who can have it. They have had the license since NFS Porsche Unleashed.

Maybe because in the contract EA specified the GT franchise. At the time they had the agreement all these new franchises didn't even exist.

That is probably not true.

But EA are allowed to sell sub-licenses to other companies. Obviously with Microsoft's (therego, Turn10's) seemingly limitless cash reserves, they got the sub license from EA. EA will also sell at a reduced price to developers it doesn't think are a threat to its own Need for Speed franchise. (although Forza was a thread to their sales, the license deal was probably huge... and it has the potential to reduce sales of GT5, and it seems like it has worked sadly)

I bet Gran Turismo has made quite a dent in Need for Speed sales, and EA will do anything to keep Porsche from them.

When the EA license deal ends, supposedly sometime within the next year, who knows who will get it. I have my bets on Microsoft/Turn10, but with Porsche forcing them to sub-license to Sony/Polyphony Digital.

I think if Porsche's were in the game, we'd hear it by now cause that's some heavy news. We've heard the news coming out from Italy on the Ferrari's and the Lambo's. But Germany's super car manufacturer in GT...wouldn't we hear something about that by now?

Good point.👍 I expect to see RUF.

twinace, I don't think so, it seems that whatever PD wants us to know we will know, everything else is pretty much under lock and key. So if they don't want to let us know until a couple months before release we won't.

The only people who OWN a licence for Porsche is PORSCHE.

Please make the distinction, EA do not OWN Porsche, they merely have "A" license to model Porsche products electronically.

I've said this many times before on other forums, but I'll say it again.

Porsche will not feature in Gran Turismo until RUF are excluded from PD's lineup. They have no interest in direct comparisons between their own cars and what Alois Ruf has built. GT + RUF = no Porsche. GT - RUF = Porsche

EA sell NFS across 6 different gaming platforms, PD have up until recently, only sold on one. What makes you think that EA give two hoots about what cars are featured in GT?

Fair enough. I recall reading on this forum a while back about the licencing between Polyphony and Porsche etc and an existing binding contract between Porsche and EA. I don't know if that was pure hot air or held any substance.

Regardless, adding Porsche would be very exciting. There are a lot of Porsche fans out there and if Porsche made it to GT, it would be very exciting news; if not just as exciting as when GT signed Ferrari. Porsche is so popular, before NFS went straight downhill, some of you might recall NFS: Porsche. Wow, was that a sweet game. The game also had the educational value of going over the Porsche history all the way to the present day Porsche's of the time. 👍 Porsche would be a HUGE addition to GT and they would announce it because it's such a large marketing device. Come on, don't tell me you haven't looked twice at purchasing a Porsche designed external hard drive ;)

Some may not consider a Porsche as an exotic inline with Ferrari because there are lower priced Porsche's on the road these days. However, I consider Porsche a modern day exotic, and I feel that title is very well deserved given their heritage, their lineup and their uniqueness.

EDIT ADDITION:

If Porsche really feels that way, that's REALLY silly in my opinion. We have HKS, we have NISMO, we have a lot of tuning houses showing off how a stock can be improved and showing off it's chassis, layout, mass balance potential. If Porsche really felt that way, that would be a serious shame. :(

I can tell you right now Porsche has no problem with RUF since they sell chassis' directly to RUF.

Also, EA does hold the license to use Porsche's in games. They can however sub-license to other game companies.

The licensing deal was not just a deal to allow EA to put the cars in the game, it was a deal that gave EA control over Porsche's video game inclusions for the duration of the contract. So for the purpose of this discussion, EA own the rights and the license, and for PD to get Porsche into Gran Turismo, they have to either wait for the deal to expire, or buy a sub-license from EA.

Porsche make good business from RUF. The chassis and the body come directly from Porsche. Plus they give Porsche publicity, if you see a RUF in the street, you look at it and instantly assume it is a Porsche. Porsche's absence from GT has nothing to do with RUF. RUF's presence in GT5 is probably a direct result of PDs failure to acquire a sub-license from EA or a full license from Porsche for GT3.

EA was the top racing franchise when GT was first released. EA watched the popularity and sales of one of their best franchises decline very rapidly as the sim racer genre emerged from Gran Turismo. The idea of a racing simulator has spawn many many games. Porsche, one of the most successful and historic car manufacturers in the world; EA knew if Gran Turismo got hold of them, they would lose even more sales. I bought NFS most wanted because i wanted to drive the Carrera GT; it worked.

I'm very curious where you read this and if you could post a reference. I keep reading this on forums but I've never seen anything "credible".

Kind of off-topic but the Carrera GT in NFS Most Wanted was a washout. :yuck: Like the M3 in more recent NFS iterations. People, like myself, but those games for the arcade value. Not for the "driving experience". The skin, be it a porsche or a ford, is irrelevant in my opinion.

I believe our take on the license is more of a good assumption based on years of partial info regarding the license from various sources pieced together. Such as the email one of the members here sent to Porsche where they replied and said the main thing stopping them is due to previous exclusivity contracts. Which everyone is pretty confident is with EA.

There was another email somewhere, which said words to the effect of: 'We let EA do computer games, whilst we make cars, and we respect the licensing decisions they make even if we would have done so differently'

I'm not sure whether that was an email from the interceptor or what, but i definetly read that on this forum, possibly this thread. read it all if you like, i havn't got time to trawl through an old thread 70 pages long :)

EDIT: I found it, it was only a couple of pages after the first:

Great find!

I had not read anything concrete about this until now, it certainly sheds a new light on things.

We can rest assured that from the email (we would have done things differently), Porsche will never allow EA an exclusive license ever again.

Does anyone know the approximate date the EA license is due to expire?

Thanks for the find 👍
I supposed this is a good an explanation as it gets in regards to the Porsche's... Now I'm just curious when these contractual agreements expire.

I hope there will be Porsches in GT5.
I see a lot of talk on this thread about how people like the modern porsches. Thats great but I'm not really a porsche fan because well, basically porsches all look the same. But I don want to drive the 917, 962, and 911 GT1. Wouldn't it be great to race a Ferrari 512S and beat a 917.
So GT, go get it. Please

I guess the best bet for PD is to wait for EA Porsche license to expire to put it in GT. What in great world are we living, competition sucks sometimes, even though there's good effect to it. :)

I'd like to think Porsche has a good chance of making an appearance. Not sure about by release time, but surely in DLC form. If not, GT6!

Sorry, if this has been brought up exactly like below before.

Ok, so we know there's an exclusive deal between Porsche and EA. And it's safe to say, this kind of deal expires at a certain date (if it's not automatically extended).

Furthermore, it is reasonable to assume, that the contract term will be some (round) number of years.

Now, guess when the first game under this exclusive contract (NFS Porsche Unleashed) was released. March 24, 2000. Which, coincidentally, would mean, that the very round number of 10 years will have passed exactly 1 week before GT5 is released in Japan.

Don't get your hopes up just yet though. This is still just pure speculation...

I'm assuming the EA-Porsche contract began several weeks/months before that game.

But it is an interesting observation. After all, they can put all the Porsche things in the game as long as they don't showcase/announce it until they get the license. But if they don't get the license they would have to take it all out again before the release.

Maybe they are making a game, and then making a sort of 'patch' to apply to gold code with Porsche in it to fully include it if they manage to get the license.

But as yet we have no photos or any evidence whatsoever that PD have been modelling or even photographing Porsches, but then again, we have no evidence for the other 800 cars that we havn't seen either.

They could simply add the cars via DLC at the appropriate time.

Ah but will they be included as AI drivers in all the races?

It would be good simply to add them in, as long as they are fully transferred.

For example, i don't recall seeing a Lotus Evora in GT5P driven by the AI cars in any of the races? What gives? If Porsche is just a DLC update, they had better put them in the game properly.

Hmm, never thought about that.
As long as I can drive a Porsche, I'm not too worried about the AI.
