In game, the classic cars only got tire warmers at the start of the race and after mid-race pit stops. Practice mode and qualifying had cold tires to start.
The warmed tires at the start of the race could theoretically be explained by the warmup lap before the race. Whether it be a standing start or rolling start, in theory, the AI did a warmup lap to get them up to temp.

It's physically impossible to warp up tires from ambient temperature to fully hot working temperature on a warm up lap. It's probably just a design decision so that people don't crash on the first turn on cold tires. Hopefully in pCars 2 it will be different.

I don't disagree. I'm just stating the possible theory used to justify the decision.

I can already see the comments of outrage if people have to start races on cold tyres.
Realism is one thing, but too much of it could spoil the fun.
If manual formation laps happen then tires will cool a lot anyways. Having hot tires also takes away the entire aspect of cold tire pressures and how you heat them up during the first few laps.

Yep, I'm quite happy to start on cold/slightly warm tyres and adapt as they heat up, but I've seen many comments complaining about the cold tyres at the start of practice and/or qualifying in PCARS1.

The devil in me hopes it doesn't run that great on PS4 so that I finally get that kick in the pants I need to add an über PC gaming rig to my racing cockpit...

;)
Just DO IT!! I did... haven't looked back. So many more options on PC, especially now with the Forza series being PC as well. And really, with what we are seeing on the GT side, is there really any reason to stick with the PS now?

The PlayStation makes for a great multi-media player.

I mean, it is less functional than a PC, of course, but still..

Now even the previously console exclusive 2D anime fighters gets released on Steam, with just a few days delay!
Sure a PS4 costs less then half of my (by now almost mainstream) 1080 GFX-card, even less then my RAM actually, and might be really the 'bang for the buck' right now! (who knows what will be the best after next console release).

But as my computer is on 24/7 x 365, and I chosen not to have a TV, it's my entire 'entertainment system'.
I couldn't imagine myself sitting with any of my laptops, unless an emergency, while doing my gaming on a console.

Nothing to lose! (except the investment of a lot of money)

(Just personal opinion, not console vs PC rant/discussion) .. and also pretty OT

wrt to the starts on cold tyres, I'd like to watch TCR as the most extreme i've seen (live as well) wrt to this.

They almost crash (actually it happened before once or twice at least) trying to put heat on them. I don't want to miss the warm up lap.

Also for historical reasons especially after rF2 where every single race I did we were forced to do it, and rightfully so.

But this is what simulation means to me. I want the full experience as close as I can possibly afford in a race weekend because I can't afford.

Bottom line, reality sucks because I can't afford it :D

Haha. They do swing them around to get heat into the rears.

How do other PC sims deal with tires during races? Are they cold at the start and after pit stops?

Generally it depends on the series the sim is replicatiing. iRacing, for the most part, it's cold tires and low pressures at the start in all cases.

Other sims will base it on whether the series they replicate allows tire warmers or not.

AS mentioned somewhere, if the series allows it, there will be tyre warmers (I'm not sure if there's an option to override this).
Racing cars usually start with low pressures and there's a reason for it. As always, it's a compromise.

Start with low pressures and a harder car to handle at the start of a stint or use more pressure but struggle at the end.

It's not just heat that builds in a tyre ;)

Hi guys, great discussions you've got going here. I've gone through most of the threads but haven't seen an answer to my questions so please forgive me if they have been asked before.

What can we expect from PC2 in terms of mechanical failure including tire punctures?

Are there consequences for abusing your gear box, brakes or even running over other car parts debris?

Is there a randomized variable to account for just "bad luck" when it comes to mechanical failure?

Thanks in advance.

We've gotten answers for the gearbox being more prone to failure. We also can't run brake ducts and radiators as low as you used to in PCars 1.

I remember them saying that parts don't fail just cause. It's all due to wear.
