Gentlemen, start your engines... Tomorrow will be the first build containing a very early version of the Solitude!

It's a very fast circuit, but the slow corners can catch you out easily. Can't wait for it to come!

Ian Bell accused Race Department forum members of slagging SMS and WMD off, threatening legal action if they didn't reign in their users for defamation and slander.

So, he's basically threatning legal action for people on another forum taking trash about SMS and WMD?? :odd:

He WAS threatening, he backed down and swept this under the carpet I guess. Not very good marketing IMHO threatening one of the biggest forums in sim racing.

Anyway sorry for posting the link as this is an issue that has been and gone which I did not notice at the time of posting.

To be fair, the ammount of turd being thrown around and full on troll flaming fests (moderators getting involved in the flaming too) about Project CARS was bad enough that a few members left the site because they didn't want to have their names associated with the website after how bad it had become.

Race Department is a fairly big site in the hardcore sim racing circles but still tiny compared to GTPlanet for example. The thread was mostly a very small group of people just throwing turd at each other, it got locked but then a moderator reoppened it because he wanted to throw some turd, and then it got even worse up until the point that Ian Bell started getting involved and they had to lock it for legal reasons.

If anything the only people at wrong here were the RD forums for letting it get out of hand, so don't just dump all the blame on ian bell here. This was a small group of people intentionally being ridiculous in order to slag off Ian Bell, SMS/WMD and Project CARS and really taking it down to a personal level and the moderators who you would expect to keep this under control were fully advocating and even taking part in said slagging off.

"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." -Voltaire

Shame on SMS. Trying to suppress the very people you are trying to win over is never good.

Start a trollfest of flaming people abusing each other on any forum and see how far you get before you get banned... Unless it's Race Department and it's concerning Project CARS, pretty much how it goes. Sometimes too far is too far, it's like starting a riot because you don't like the taste of your chips, alright fair enough you didn't like the chips just go eat some other chips, you don't need to start a riot.

My system is a bit too crap to be handling pCars, well actually it's just my graphics card (gtx650 ti), but when I run pCars windowed with 3 screens I am able to run it with low settings, but when I do full screen it is really really bad, not able to run smoothly even at lowest settings. Why is this? My guess was because it's rendering all 3 screens for their own when I'm not running windowed, but I'm not sure...?

With only 1 screen I'm able to run almost max with HDR 1 step back.

RD has 140k+ members, GTP has 230k+.. Not that tiny. :)

But yeah, old topic, done and dusted.

Of course, any decent laptop with a quad core can run it, but running it well is another matter. To run it well enough so that it'd be playable I'd suggest getting something with at least an i5 and with a decent dedicated GPU. You're looking at spending at the very least $600.

I plan on running HDMI to my AVR (Yamaha RX-A710) and then to my plasma for racing. Is that a factor at all? The AVR has several HDMI inputs.

There is a company in my area (pcdirect.com) that refurbishes and builds custom PC's (they'll fix my YLOD fat PS3). I know they can build a decent tower for a reasonable price.

They have a good selection of laptops: http://pcdirect.com/laptops.html?SID=f76f549b9a7ba1aaa3441c7bf8671208&order=price&dir=desc

I had a tower connected to my Kuro before. It worked out well for watching videos and whatnot. But actually using the computer's keyboard & mouse from my Lazy Boy with a TV tray was not a comfortable situation. Plus I could never get resolution and font size correct for my needs. It was very frustrating. So, I need flexibility that a laptop offers. My wife has a 15", I need a 17".

Now *THIS* is the kind of news that makes me regret not getting in before they closed it down.

Any news on Dundrod, Isle of Man, Urbanya or Jops Siffert?

@ Dave: None of these laptops will run pCARS in a satisfying way, I m afraid. They are also not really that great value for money, tbh.

There is a member @ WMD that has a Lenovo y580, with the following specs:

i7-3610QM @ 2,3-3,3GHz / Nvidia GTX660M 2GB GDDR5 / 8GB DDR3 1600MHz / Win7 64

That thing costs roughly 1000€ and he can run pCARS on medium settings at circa 55 fps currently. I personally wouldnt go lower than that, the performance dropoff is huge afterwards, if you save 100 bucks at the wrong end, you will probably regret it later on.

If you want the game to look like on the screens and in the vids posted here, you need firepower. Unfortunately that comes at a price if you want a laptop (because compact = expensive) and with compromises. Your laptop will be big, heavy and loud. I have a XMG P502 (its the same as a Sager NP9150 for you 'murricans) with those specs:

I7-3610QM 2.3Ghz/3.3Ghz 6MB 45W Ivy Bridge // GTX 675MX 4GB GDDR5 (310.70) // 16 GB DDR3 1600Mhz // 750GB Seagate Momentus SATA-II // Win 7 Professional 64bit

Doesnt look that much different, right? So why did I pay a whopping 700 Euros more? Cause my brick of a laptop is modular and better structured, so while he is stuck with his setup, I can swap any part that I want and throw in 16 GB ram more, a faster GFX card or a SSD anytime I want.

And my performance is 70+ fps at high/ultra except reflections and shadows, which I run on medium.

So you can get a laptop that runs this game (and all other games of last and this year) quite well, but expect to pay a lot of moneys. ;)

Are we ever going to get a new base build
Patch patches on patches !

Also if you need to free space on your SSD you can delete the patch files from
C:\Users\[ your name ] \AppData\Local\CARS\Patches

Once they are installed they just sit there. Probably keep the base build in case you have to uninstall and re install so you wont have to re download it.

Running video through a receiver then to the tv might increase the response time, or what you might think will be input lag. It may or may not be noticeable to you. Kind of like how some people can't un-see aliasing and some people are clueless.

Well, my i3-powered Samsung laptop is screwed. :grumpy:

What's a Solitude? I'm sure I know what car you're talking about but...I don't have a picture on my mind. :)

A Rennstrecke. Which is German for Racetrack. ;)

So yes, we have a new road in the sky to explore. :sly:

Right...even tho I'm Bavarian (so, technically German) I've never heard of that track. *embarassing*

I really thought it's about one of the cars on the picture. :)

Solitude is perfect for the Lotus 49.

In fact, I'll have to Frap a lap from the rFactor version. It's pretty fun.

The rFactor mod version is wrong in several places, though. ;) Due to our extensive research (bordering on archeology sometimes, studying old plans and maps, scanning through archives, interviewing race drivers from back then, even digging out lost parts of the track in the woods etc), the pCARS version will be much more authentic to the original.

The rFactor version seems off especially in the dimensions.
Not to mention that the graphics aren't that good.
It's awesome to know that it'll be recreated with proper details.
No one knows this track, which is a shame.

This will be fun.
