PS3 General Discussion

Umm I have question here... does PS3 has an achievements system like the one they have in XBOX360?? sorry if this question has been asked before

Ive got a question aswell, can someone tell me if the PS3 plays DVIX discs? As in like a burn an AVI file onto a data DVD and it will play?? Do both DVDRW and DVDR both work or not at all?

Cheers, Robin

No, but I'm sure someone will find a way in the future. But, out of the box, no, it only plays MPEG2 and MP4.

In the meantime, get VSO ConvertXtoDVD. It's great in converting videos to DVD format, I use it all the time.

A wheel is intended to give the player immersion with the title, to make him feel more into the game. Keyboard and mice do not have functions like this.
But many people do claim to get better control, and thus times, using a wheel. This is the reference that was being made. If peopel using a wheel can get a better time should they not be allowed as well?

I think his point is not the cost of the keyboard/mouse, but that it alters the playing field. You'd see many people kicking other people's asses because they have a superior controller.
Considering that I grew up in a time when computer speeds were measured in numbers like 286 and 486 and it was all a matter of faster computer speeds when online, I fail to see the problem. I can't count the number of times I died because the other guy thought I was just standing around. If someone is going to whine because they can't spend an extra $10 at Big Lots or just move them over from their PC then I will hand them some cheese and play a violin. Get better with the controller you have or get a better controller. Heck, I think I might have an extra keyboard and mouse from my old PC still hanging around.

And with the wheel thing, I'll bet you that the people who have G25s will easily beat the online competition that have SIXAXIS controllers, IMO.
So should G25s be banned from online play?

I understand what you're saying for you, but in reality, developers are thinking about the audience as a whole, and how EVERYONE can enjoy it, at least as many as possible. So, while it'd be good for you, it would really divide the online community, and that's pretty much the reason it's not included.
So, everyone doesn't include the people that don't want to play with a controller? If they want everyone they will allow it and then just have a way for people to play keyboard/mouse only games and controller only games.

I prefer a controller myself because I have dexterity problems in my left hand and so jumping around using hot keys on a keyboard can get annoying but just using my thumb and index finger is much quicker for me. I would love to see how I stacked up against a guy with a keyboard. I bet you would find some guys who have mastered the controlletr so well that they will compete with the best of the keyboard/mouse users.

Forcing one group to have to use an alternate control from their preference does not allow you to see who is truly best. In fact, the keyboard/mouse users are put at a disadvantage because they aren't as comfortable with a controller.

I mean people who can't be bothered to spend money on a keyboard and mouse, or who don't want to disconnect their PC periphials each time.
If they care enough to whine about it then they will get a keyboard and mouse.

I don't think that's the reason they didn't enabled keyboard and mouse use, not the main reason at least. It doesn't sound like a big deal to me.

 It really isn't a big deal, and I hope more developers consider keyboard/mouse support. And just to make sure that the playing field is consistent, make sure the min/max sensitivity is the same for both mouse and controller users. That way no one would have a mechanical advantage over the other.

If it could be done I would love a light gun interface so I just point and shoot, but I don't know how you could have all the other movements as well.

Ummm...you could use a Wii? :)

Seriously though, a secondary attachment like the Nunchuks for the Wii would be all you need. A single analog stick with a couple buttons on it attached to the gun....

That's basically how COD3 on the Wii works. It's pretty cool and actually rather intuitive.

On other news, I was surprised when I saw an email this moring from one of the largest online stores we have over here selling the PS3 already. But when I go check the package and the price...

http://www.americanas.com.br/hscp/4758?par=buscap3

This is sad, a 20gb PS3 plus four PS2 games for R$7.980,00 (U$3.627,27 roughly). WTF?

Also another online store is selling the wii for U$1.100,00. That's just sad and I don't doubt some stupid people will buy them.

I thought about that, but without having played it yet I didn't want to assume it would work that way.

Plus, I was envisioning a Guncon type setup with the analog stick on the back and using buttons on the side to switch weapons.

Thanks for the quick reply Jeremy Ricci :) 👍 Oh well, its just because with alot of cheapo dvd players offing DVIX playback I thought the PS3 would be a sure bet to play nearly everything....but its not a big deal. In theory could you not just put the videos on your PS3 HDD and play them on the TV through some sort of video media player (does PS3 have one?).

DVD Santa is also a great program.

Yeah, its abit off topic but, about these programs... there arnt any proper FREE ones for converting AVI to VOB properly out there are there (not like the ones with 30 mins limit or having the buy me! logo plastered in the middle of the screen), because I was considering upgrading from nero express 6 (bundled with DVDRW drive) to Nero 7 full because it does that function.

Its not too important, I dont wana take this thread off topic too much cos its being such a great imformative thread so far! :dopey:

You can always install Linux in a dual-boot cfg and use any number of compatible players VLC comes to mind. Seems like a lot of work, but it might be worth it to check out and might even be a little fun getting it going. ;)

Yeah im looking forward to trying out yellow dog linux compatability... it is possible if you had VLC on it.. oh well wont be getting a PS3 for a while because of the EU launch.....

Robin

this may have already have been answered but is there any news on how many playstation 3s will be coming to england and will they be cheaper than originally priced at

No word on numbers for the EU (not just the UK) and no official price as such. And by official I mean from Sony. Looking at sites like Amazon they have no price. Play have £550 for a 60GB with three games. But it's been mooted at £425 for the 60GB model and the 20GB around £370 or lower. £350 for the 20GB would be a damned good price in my book.
Don't expect big numbers for the UK. There was around 70,000 360's for the UK launch. Sony will do well to equal that. Any more and it will be a real coup.

I was just in the local Wal*Mart looking for the memory card adaptor and controller adaptor and they had a system in stock. It had a sold tag on it and the guy came in to get it while I was there. They still haven't replaced the broken controller. Anyways, they only had the memory card adaptor, which I don't have a real use for by itself. Yeah, I'd like to play San Andreas and a few others from where I left off, but I've been playing CoD3 online too much to worry about those. I'm wanting both adaptors to play Guitar Hero (or at least test it). I think it should work. Whenever it said to press the PS button when I used the G25 I just hit the right button on the wheel (R2 I think) and it went on.

Edit: You should see the overstock of 360s. Probably six Premium ones and four Core systems. No Wiis. I couldn't believe how small the Wii controller/nunchuck are! I was expecting it to be the normal size of a remote control.

The only reason they aren't BC is because the PS3 will not recognize them as being in "analog mode" and since there is no switch on the controller, it makes it difficult to adjust. HOWEVER, a new Guitar Hero is on the way for PS3, with a rumored wireless controller.

So what's all this about Kutaragi and Hirai getting new jobs?
www.computerandvideogames.com

I have no idea what this actually means. But some sites are in hysterics on the news. kikizo.com
Should anyone be bothered, 'coz I don't get it. Perhaps someone here could explain what any of this means (if anything).

From what it looks like, Hirai, who's the head of SCEA (America), will now be head of SCEJ (Japan). Jack Tretton will now be head of SCEA, and Kutaragi is now only chief executive officer at SCE, presumably giving up his spot as head of SCEJ.

Pretty much, what this means was that Sony was disappointed with the PS3 launch and is now changing leadership. How this will have effect on the PS3 is still up in the air.

It's just a change in management, and has no effect on anything at all. The media is up in arms because, well, it's the media. If they say "this is nothing major" no one cares, if they say "OMG RUN FOR THE HILLS!!" then everyone else is up in arms, and posts links all over said forums (see your post). It's just how things work.

Basically, KK stepped down as head to take an out of the spot light role as CEO, and Jack Trenton and Kaz fill pretty much the same role they did in their previous jobs...spokes people for Sony. I still think Phil Harrison is the better of the four, being the most level headed and understandable, plus he's english.

Well, there's a wireless controller for guitar hero already so that should be expected.

Just wondering, does the PS logo in the Six Axsis glow? I know the 4 player lights are red...

Robin

No glow. The only lights are the 4 little red lights that indicate what controller number that particular controller is assigned to, i.e. 1-4.

Err... what it means is that Ken Kutaragi was originally rewarded for his hard work, but he proved to be a little too kooky for the spotlight. Plus Sony wants him in a quiet lab so the mad scientist can create more mad science for the next... forever.

Analists and journalists are getting more useless by the report. No wonder I don't miss the news anymore. :P
