PS3 General Discussion

;)

72 hours, eh? I locked up on me again...that's twice, but then I realized that the Satellite receiver that sits under the PS3 was left on by my nephew which was cranking out the heat. Between that and the internal heat from the PS3, I attribute the lock up to abnormal working conditions. :)

I wonder if they will have a 'boot from USB device" option in future PS3 OS updates. I would love to try something like that out. I just don't like the idea of formatting my PS3 OS drive... :scared:

The LEDs are supposed to flash when it begins to overheat. The green and blue (I think it stays green anyways...it may turn to red) LEDs alternate when it gets hot and it will shut itself off when it gets too hot.

Edit: I've been playing 24 player games of CoD3 online via WiFi without any lag at all. Much better than the 360's wireless via USB. I think the USB was being a bottleneck there, because I had some bad lag with Halo 2.

Edit2: Update 1.11 is now available. I wish we knew what these were supposed to be fixing.

What games are you guys playing? I have already tried NFS: Carbon and it nearly bored the **** out of me. Plus, the 720p and tremendous amount of aliasing turned me off to an other wise great presentation of the game. I still love the classic style FMVs in the game. I also have RR7, but it seems tedious to unlock everything, I'm only at 3%. I still have it only because of 1080p output.

resistance!!!

and there's blast factor (high scores own me).

and I`ll be picking up FNR3 soon (tues).

Resistance, maybe. I keep getting killed in the demo. I am looking foward to FNR3, it looks great, and it's one of those 360 titles that made me jealous of not owning a 360. :grumpy:

Resistance (mouse and keyboard support please......)
Ridge Racer (nothing new, looks as good as to be expected)
Ultimate Alliance (with the family, 2-4 players coop)
and a little Tiger Woods PGA (nailed a spectator in the nut sack last night,)
and when my brain is tired, Blast Factor.

I doubt any FPS titles will have keyboard and mouse support because it makes the playing field lop sided.

For some, probably. I'm sure there are some controller operators that are just as good as some keyboard/mouse operators. I just happen to prefer keyboard/mouse because I have been playing almost all FPS exclusively on the PC with exception to Halo on the Xbox. Game designers should let the public decide if they want to use a controller or a keyboard/mouse. Apparently, Sony has left that decision up to the discretion of the game developers. So the possibility is there. What about cross platform online gaming? Let PC gamers play console gamers. Let's face it, the PS3 is not just a console, but a personal computer with a primary role to play games. ;)

I think it's up to the developers of the game to release a patch for mouse/keyboard, right? It would be nice indeed, and a lot of people would enjoy that. I actually thought this was going to be standard in FPS since the PS3 recognizes any USB keyboard and mouse now, after all there were some PS2 games supporting mouse and keyboard for playing already. If I'm not mistaken you can use it on MOH Frontline.

By the way, has anyone here reported how the PS3 handles BD movies yet? I don't remember reading anything about this on the thread.

Edit: And about PS3 gamers playing with PC players online, there was also a PS2 game that allowed that. NFS Underground I think.

No, that's like saying racing games shouldn't be compatible with wheels because some people are better or worse with a wheel than a pad.

Looks like HD, sounds like HD. I think it handles it the way it should. ;)

From what I read. the PS3 performs better than Sam sung Blueray Player, it loads quicker and the image quality is sharper, thanks to the power of the Cell.

It plays/loads as quick as my Sony DVD player. Didn't notice any lag, or at least I don't remember saying to myself, "man, this is taking a long time to load".

That example is significantly different.

In a first person shooter, moving the mouse from one end to the other very quickly will give you better accuracy and faster control than an analog stick ever will. Even if you adjust the sensativity, you still have a limited range of motion, since the analog stick is used to "move" where you look, vs a mouse, where you can move very VERY fast to the exact point you want to fire at.

Face it, even if you don't want to admit it, keyboard and mouse would significantly alter the playing field, and make the game very lop sided online, and would possibly ruin it for those who do not have or cannot afford a keyboard and mouse for the PS3. It's just not worth it for developers to risk their core audience (casual gamers) who will not really give a crap about keyboard and mouse compatibility. You won't see it in many titles, if at all.

A wheel is intended to give the player immersion with the title, to make him feel more into the game. Keyboard and mice do not have functions like this.

Ummm....so they can afford a $600 game system but not a $20 keyboard and mouse? Heck, I can find a keyboard AND a mouse for less then what a new 6 axis wireless controller (usb cable NOT included) costs.

I think his point is not the cost of the keyboard/mouse, but that it alters the playing field. You'd see many people kicking other people's asses because they have a superior controller.

Now, if I were the developer, I'd enable keyboard/mouse support for single player and local multiplayer only. Enabling it online would divide the playing field.

And with the wheel thing, I'll bet you that the people who have G25s will easily beat the online competition that have SIXAXIS controllers, IMO.

One game to watch that'll probably decide this debate with controllers is Shadowrun (or is it Crackdown?) on the X360. It'll be able to play against gamers on Vista PCs, and that should end this argument.

*shruggs* I could really care less about the playing field. My eyes are old and tired and need all the help I can get. If a piece of equipment aids in allowing me to be less frustrated while playing a FPS because that's what I'm used to, I see no problem in doing so.

I am practicing with Resistance and am getting better but it is hella hard for me to aim..., almost to the point where it isn't fun. I have to take it really slow but remember back in the day when it wasn't that big of a deal. I'll get used to it, but it would be better (FOR ME) to use what ever controller I choose to make the GAME as enjoyable as possible. ;)

You're 32! It's not like you're some old shriveled up 67-year-old prune.

I know...but I'm oh so tired. I guess if I slept more and did less gaming then my eyes might work better and I might have more energy.

Dude, resistance single player has the most aiming aids I've ever seen in my life...if you can't hit targets with those...you might as well give up all together, lol.

I understand what you're saying for you, but in reality, developers are thinking about the audience as a whole, and how EVERYONE can enjoy it, at least as many as possible. So, while it'd be good for you, it would really divide the online community, and that's pretty much the reason it's not included.

And I should reword, I don't mean people who can't afford, rather, I mean people who can't be bothered to spend money on a keyboard and mouse, or who don't want to disconnect their PC periphials each time.

;) It cool... It's been frustrating but I am starting to actually look up when I mean to and can actually hit targets while running around as I should be able to. Starting to have some fun, which is the whole point. I think after I go though the game in all 6 modes, I should be pretty proficient by the end.

I understand what you are saying completely and I can see why they may not add keyboard/mouse to FPS's..... but.... Playstations are pretty much just a Gran Turismo console for me, I am a PC gamer really only because the keyboard and mouse. If PS3 FPS's would allow the Keyboard and mouse I would not hesitate to buy those games especially with the PS3 power and my HDTV. I believe alot of PC players would get into the games if they had better control like a PC.

Oh well then PC gamers either have to get used to playing fps with pads or they should go on playing fps on the PC. I do both and it is no problem for me to play either with mouse/ keyboard or with a pad. And if I can, everybody can ;) ... I also don't see any difference concerning the fun you have - not at all, so I'd recommed some practice....

As mentioned above, balance is the problem. And I wouldn't want to sacrifice it for that option. ( As for the driving wheel / pad example : I doubt that you are faster with a wheel, it's just more fun and more realistic )...)
