PS3 General Discussion

New PS3 owner here, I finally bought one as I couldn't be bothered waiting any longer. Got it for a resonable price with a discount and two games (F1 and Resistance)

I don't like Resistance much and F1 is ok but nothing great IMO, I am having more fun with the GT HD demo.

Oh and I downloaded the Motorstorm demo and it is much better than I remember when I played it at a booth in a department store. (wish I got motorstorm instead of resistance)

*Awaits GTAIV, more Gran Turismo*

Just got this:

It's good to see they might update multiple times during E3... but no mention of demos? I hope they're intentionally not saying that in order to surprise us.

@ Viper: Congrats on the PS3... but you should've waited less than a week for the $100 pricecut.

If anyone reading this swapped their PS3 HDD and used the old HDD for an external PC USB storage device, please PM me. I'm having trouble (no big surprise since my PC never likes any hardware connected to it via USB) and would like some info from ya. Thanks. :)

You have to format the HDD to NTFS, by default it's probably FAT32. Though, Windows should recognize both.

F1 is nothing great? I fully agree we each are intitled to our opinion, but I'd really encourage you to give F1 an earnest effort and see if it doesn't grow on you. The intensity of trying to keep you wits about you while screaming down a straight at 200+ mph with 4 or more cars all jockeying for position barreling towards a rapidly approaching breaking zone is a rush to say the least :D I love GT too, but my actual racing skills have improved exponentially since playing F1:CE. Besides there is nothing in GT that compares to the post start turn 1 chaos you'll get on almost every track in this game. :scared:

I was having trouble with the external case software. It was for Windows 98. But when I ran it with that, it would give error RUNDLL messages up the wazoo.

I took a look in Disk Management, and noticed it wasn't online. So, I brought it online formatted a partition, 30GB for FAT32 (since 32BG is max with XP SP2) and the other 30GB is still unformatted. I then assigned it a letter and all is good! I didn't need that stupid software after all.

Thanks anyway, but I got her working. 👍

I have been playing F1 a bit more and it is growing on me somewhat, I've been so busy between games and demos (and other things) I really need to give it some proper sit down time with and and connect my DFP.

Also, with Resistance, you need to play it more. It's a game that's mediocre in the beginning and constantly gets better with each level.

...Also guys, there's was a show a few days ago completely about Heavenly Sword on Bravo UK. YouTube videos of the thing below.

And this game just make Lair its bitch. You know that part in the E3 05 trailer where Nariko is fighting against King Bohan's army? With tons and tons of enemies on screen? It recreates that perfectly. I haven't been stunned by a game like this in a long time.

EDIT: Here's YouTube, all three segments total to about 20 minutes long, so get comfy:

Instantly went from a rental to Day 1 purchase for me.

Since day one I've been more interested in Heavenly Sword than Lair. Downloading the torrent now. Thats also my number one torrent site ;)

Just as an FYI to everyone, I removed the torrent because I'm not sure if it's exactly kosher here (entire thing of I'm assuming a copyrighted TV show w/o ads), and it takes forever to download anyway. If you still want it and the better quality video, PM me and I'll nudge you in the right path.

The Nucleus trail is out on the Japanese PS Store.

I find it a little boring... and it doesn't look that good either. There are jaggies everywhere, and isn't very satisfying.

It isn't helped that the whole thing is in Japanese too, so I have no idea what I'm doing...

Very much by coincidence, the program was just starting while I was flipping TV channels earlier. Lots of footage I had never seen before. The end and beginning battles look fantastic, and the combo system much more complex than it seems. It might have to be one of the games I have to buy in the future. 👍

I to will join those that say give F1:CE more of your time. It is a brilliant game, the best F1 game I have among my large collection of them, and has features you'll wish were in other driving games like GT and Forza. Ignore the demo for F1:CE, like the demo for MotorStorm, it is a very poor sample of what the game is really like.

Thanks for those video links Duck. I have only watched half of the first one and wow.... I seriously had little to no interest in this game when it was mentioned a couple months ago, and while the trailer that was made available on the Sony Store certainly looked pretty, I still couldn't get excited about a sword fighting game, but I must say, the story as described in that video clip you posted now has me really interested!

This is just like the recent behind the scenes videos on the official Lair website, where it is obvious the developers are paying a lot of attention to the story, and not just the action. 👍

With these latest video clips and development news on Heavenly Sword, I think it deserves it's own dedicated official thread. I nominate Duck to make it, as he has done a great job with similar threads, like Lair. 👍

Ok I watched the video and it is a great complement to God Of War. The music and voice acting seems just as good as GOW. I also see her hair has improved big time but i still dont know why it took a whole spu for it.

Oh great Sony, are you really this incompetent?

Sony Corp. announced a revised PlayStation 3 console Monday with a bigger hard drive for storing downloaded content such as video games and high-definition movies.

The new $599 PS3 increases the system's storage capacity from 60 to 80 gigabytes and also includes a retail copy of the online racing title ``MotorStorm,'' a company spokesman said.

Starting Monday, the current 60 gigabyte model will cost $499 _ a $100 price drop.

The larger capacity machine won't be available in the United States and Canada until August.

It plays into the company's upcoming strategy of eventually offering downloaded high-definition movies, video games, movie trailers and demos, Sony spokesman David Karraker said.

I mean seriously. They need to get rid of the whole "but the PS3 costs $600" stigma that's around it. No one really cares about an extra 20GB and a game you can get for $30 off eBay. They need to stop doing what MS does introducing a new SKU. I mean, it'd be one thing of the HDD size was 160GB or something huge, but just a 20GB bump? Boo. 👎

Yes, I know there's still going to be the 60GB out there, but unless this bundle is going to be in extremely limited quantities, and thus make the 60GB the primary pack... they could phase this out like they did with the 20GB very easily.

I know I'm probably overreacting, but I want Sony to do well, not do something ridiculously stupid.

👎

EDIT: Yeah I'm overreacting. It's going to be a "limited edition".

Sorry for the double post, but this is really important and it's my birthday so be nice to me anyway.

Read this.

Now, here's the Duck Tracy analysis:
  • Around the 10 minute mark, you see two different developers at Free Radical, a 3rd party developer, use a blurred out controller.
  • The first time it is "shown", he puts it down and it moves for no apparent reason towards him.
  • He is getting shot in the game while it is moving.
ShockAxis is coming. 👍

Limited Edition or not, I don't think you are over reacting at all. $100 for a game and 20GB more disc space??? As you said, it would have made much more sense to match the Elite's 120GB HDD. I'm already close to filling my 60GB drive, and now considering replacing it for a much larger HDD or adding an external HDD... although I'm still unclear on how to properly do that. :indiff:

I also agree that from a marketing standpoint, and no matter how much one might easily justify the $600 price for what you get with a PS3, I think that price point is scareing off a lot of potential buyers, and even as a limited edition, it still makes the PS3 seem more expensive then it really is. Sony has never been very good in terms of marketing, and I think this latest decision is an example of this. 👎

That said, with the $100 price cut and the choice of any 5 free Blu-ray movies worth ~$125, the 60GB is certainly a much better deal now. If you are a movie fan you can look at it like you are getting the following:
  • $200 Next Gen Game Console
  • $200 High Quality Blu-ray Player
  • $100 Five Blu-ray movies of your choice
That’s a pretty darn good bargain if you are in the market for any of those.

Great find Duck!

Oh, and Happy Birthday you lil’ quacker you! :)

Nice to know...as long as there is going to be some sort of upgrade program. I don't want to pay $120 to get rumble.

I usually don't care about rumble much, but it does help in shooters when you are shot and I like how it was done in GRAW2 when you are in vehicles and such.

Edit: Happy Birthday Duck! Hope you have a good one.

Seriously Duck? Come on, let's think business here, and not think that Sony is your play buddy that wants to hit the sandlot with you. It makes sense for them to try to pull profit by introducing a model that costs the *same* to manufacture as a 60GB PS3, and package in a game (that costs them all of probably $10 to stamp and package) and then sell it for $100. For Sony, that's $90 off of the 'lost' price they spend on the PS3.

Let's think like that for a minute, instead of thinking like GAF, where every company must cater to your every need, without thinking for one second what would be good for their business.

I fully agree, and hooking up the DFP in teh full version makes a HUGE difference, even without FFB.

Yeah, but the Xbox still costs more if you want the large capacity HDD and HD Movies.... :indiff:
Don't forget WiFi as well. That's an extra $100 tacked on ($60 if you go third party).

I'm already close to filling my 60GB drive, and now considering replacing it for a much larger HDD or adding an external HDD... although I'm still unclear on how to properly do that. :indiff:
Will it not use an external drive for downloadable content? I haven't tried that yet.

Also, if it isn't a PSN download then I keep it on my PC and external drive for my PC and just Media Share. I've downloaded every demo, video, and a handful of games and still had over 35gigs left. After deleting the stuff that didn't hold an interest I am back at 40gb left.

Speaking of media sharing, thanks for the tip on fixing my connection, G.T. I just had to disable UPnP on my Linksys router. Apparently both Cisco and Sony have been made aware of the problem from various people and there are hopes of a firmware upgrade from at least one of the two to fix the issue so that UPnP can be used on the network as well, which is supposedly necessary for the 360.

And I found that my PS3 is my best DVD player now. My Die Hard with a Vengeance disc had a ton of blocking mid-movie, so I popped it into the PS3 and switched on the noise and blocking filters. It played crystal clear. Maybe I should quit buying the cheapest DVD players with MP3 support I can find.

Buying cheap DVD players is one of the worst things you can do if you want decent-ish quality. Having witnessed a several cheap players (one a £30 Acustic Solutions) and a couple of very expensive ones (one a HDMI Pioneer that cost £800 3 1/2 years ago...), the difference is startling. The PS3 isn't far off now, especially after the recent scaling options, but isn't quite as clear and sharp as the Pioneer. But it's not bad at all, considering the amount of other capabilities the PS3 has. :)

If it were consistently bad it would make me go out and buy something better, but as I watched the first two Die Hard movies, two Netflix rentals, Arrested Development season 1, and Serenity all since the last problem it is a rare thing and something that can be worked around until BD players get into my price range, which will probably be after I get an HDTV.

I just went out and bought Rainbow Six: Vegas and I definitely agree with duck, it is an awesome game. The only frustrating thing is how quickly you die. Its realistic, but frustrating at times.
