PS3 General Discussion

Hey duck, do you know if Dirt has online play? I dont feel like researching, Im playing Super stardust HD!!
It does... but not like the online play you're thinking of. You're by yourself trying to get the fastest lap, while everyone else is trying to get the fastest lap. It's nothing like 8 cars on a track at the same time trying to win.
How is Super Stardust HD? I have heard about it, but know absolutely nothing about it.
Best PSN game, best $8 I've spent in a while.
However, if you want to quickly start a game with friends and that particular game doesn't have a "Send Invite to Play Game" feature built-in, all you have to do is send them an IM through the PS3 and ask them if they are interested in a game. Unless they have turned off the "Message Alert" option, they will be alerted of your IM even during a game. Once you have your "crew" you can all meet in a decided upon "room". One person can then create the game and invite only those you all wish to play with you.

The problem with that is that the recipient of the message (who's playing the game) doesn't know what the message is going to be about without exiting the game, it could be about an online get-together or a simple "lol that game sucks."

Sony showed off a new feature in Home at E3, and that it will allow you and your friends in Home to group together in a special MotorStorm online room (I think, could be wrong about the specifics), and then it automatically launches you into MotorStorm directly to that lobby with your friends.

Ahh thanks Duck. That doesnt sound like a whole lot of fun though.

Yea, that is something that I am curious about. Home in general just confuses me, as I am so unsure on how everything will work. Will they have rooms dedicated to games, and you have to enter that room with friends to go play a game, or can you just start up the game from anywhere, with friends nearby? Im just anxious to get my hands on home to see how everything will work.

I saw that in Phil's demonstration... very cool. He said we will be able to start any Blu-ray game or PSN game right from Home, but I assume for playing with freiend's they al will have to have the Blu-ray game in their drive, or the PSN game on their HDD. Still sounds promising. I also liked the idea of your own Home Theater to show your videos, game replays, etc to friends within Home.

That brings up another question/possibility. If any of you are familiar with PSP's, you know about game sharing. Basically, if the psp's are close to each other, and one person has a game, it will allow you to send the game to someone nearby, and you guys can play together. Of course its usually not very much content to it, in Metal gear solid portable ops, you could send one multiplayer map to up to 3 other psp's, and you could all play against each other. What if something like this was possible with the PS3. I dont see why not, you could send it over the internet, or through home, and really, it would benefit game manufacturers because its basically free marketing.

So, kind of like time-based rally racing in real life?

I know early on they had mentioned arcade games and the PSN trailer showed an arcade machine behind someone (I think). Would your games possibly be built into that too?

I think another fun way for them to do it would be to have a virtual PS3 for your home theater setup and so if a friend comes to your space and wants to play a game you can access it from the virtual PS3 and then your screen zooms into the virtual screen until you are looking at the actual load screen.

Wow. I don't have a PSP and didn't know they did this. I'm curious about the technicals on this, like if it sends the game engine and the map or if the host just runs the whole engine and the others just load up a map.

If it wouldn't take too long to transfer the proper data this would be really cool to have. If you don't own the game you could only run one track/map provided by your friend's game, kind of like a demo.

It seems to me like that would be even better than word-of-mouth advertising to sell games, especially as some games suffer in single-player but shine as a multiplayer game. In this case a traditional demo wouldn't sell the game, but this would.

Fair idea, but considering how large games are currently, and how much bigger they're going to get, the amount of data that will have to be sent to another user will be huge. It could take over an hour just to send it to another user using an average broadband connection.

But with the PSN games, it might be a little more possible!

The Great PS3 Exclusive games that make it the #1 system to have. It is a spin on the E3 closing video. Includes footage of MGS4, Ratchet & Clank, FFXIII, Lair, Killzone 2, Little Big Planet, Drake's Fortune, Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, Gran Tursimo 5: Prologue, and Singstar

When you say "your games", what do you mean? MotorStorm? SSHD? Or Home-specific games like pool?

Exactly. Thats exactly how it is with the PSP. Just gives enough of a sample to make you want to buy the game. We also played Tekken 5, in that though, you could pick any character, and fight against each other. Only one level though. It was a lot of fun, and basically made 1st period go a lot faster in school.

I dont think that it is entirely impossible. Lets say, that someone sends it to you, its the size of a standard demo on the ps store. around 500 mb maybe. They send it the first time, and it gets cached to your hdd, so from there on out, you can just play. Its fairly simple, and adds to marketing a lot.

Ideally: any game.

Realistically:
Definitely the Home based games and I don't think that any PSN games would be too hard to pull off.

Disc-based games might be a different story because it would require a prompt to ask you to insert the disc or something.

Really it would just have to be a sort of interface that could also link directly to the multiplayer modes.

I guess a lot would have to depend on the game developers allowing it to interact.

As for the bowling game. Is that using the motion sensor? If so, how do you hold it for that? It seems like the SixAxis would be a bit awkward.

Kent, might I recommend buying either a PS2 or PS3 S-video cable, they aren't too hard to find and most of the time you will notice slightly better picture quality. Since I take the PS3 away from my HD TV a fair amount to show it off to my friends and family I bought a 12' set of PS2 cables (you can use any PS2 cable with the PS3 since they have the same AV multi-out) that have both s-video and standard video on the same cable along with audio so it gives you both options and a lot of flexibility on where your system goes. Check the Best Buy website as I'm pretty sure thats where I bought them.

Anyone excited by Unreal Tournamnet 3? I've never played the earlier games and I'm wondering about the PS3 game. Should I bother with it?
I've seen some pics but I wonder if they accurately reflect the PS3 game. http://unrealtournament3.com/
I don't hear much of a buzz about it. Or is that because it's still seen by most as a PC game? Any thoughts?

It has quite a large PC base, so I'm not surprised there isn't a lot of hype... but I'm expecting it to be great because it uses the same physics engine used in Gears of War, which is awesome. I'm looking forward to a similar experience, and more action. 👍

Actually, Unreal 3 is going to be the big killer ap. No one in the other camp wants to talk about it and so you don't hear as much hype for UR3 as you do for something like COD4.

However, get this...
UR3 is being designed so PC users can create new maps, then PC and PS3 owners will be able to play together online and PS3 users will be able to use the maps created by PC users!

Shared online experiences between PC and PS3 users, combined with user created maps, as well as awesome graphics and gameplay will surely make this a shooter for everyone to play. 👍

In fact, it's games like this that make me say the Halo 3 issue is nearly a moot point since it will be only a matter of time before PS3 users have first person shooters to match or go beyond the Halo experience (but don't tell the fanboys I've said that because I know how crazy they can be... and I don't blame them, I loved Halo 2 online).

In any case, UR3 has got me excited and I'm sure it will be worth the buzz once the final product is released. 👍

Btw, my source for that info was a G4 E3 2007 interview with "cliffy b" where he acknowledged the above subjects and compared to the PC-PS3 experience to D&D with PC users being dungeon masters and PS3 users being the more casual players. :D

Well first time I've heard it, but anyways it sounds very interesting that PS3 players will be playing with/against PC players. Do you think it will uncover any advantages/disadvantages with console controller users vs. keyboard/mouse controller users?

Wait. What?

All I heard was that PC mods can be used on PS3 and that it also supports kb/m. There's actually going to be cross-platform play?

That's what I'm getting out of it...

I may be wrong, but in the recent interview, an Epic developer said that they have no plan to allow PS3 and PC users to play UT3 together at the moment, but of course gamers can create mods for the PS3s using their PCs.

anyways:

[As for the other two consoles], one [Wii] is a lollipop, and I'm too old for lollipops. The other one [Xbox 360] I get sick from once in a while because the cook isn't always reliable.

Well Kent said his source was from an G4 E3 2007 with "cliffy b" (i'm not sure who he is actually) and said he acknolwedged the above subjects which includes the cross-platform gaming.

EDIT: Well then I'm not sure what to believe now. Who is cliffy b first off.

Cliffy B is one of the lead designers at Epic Games and he was the lead designer on Gears of War. He has also done a lot of the development for the Unreal games.

Digital-Nitrate, thanks for the info! +rep

Old after only 6 days. :ouch:
Guess that means this industry is running moment to moment huh? ;)

In any case, I did mention Cliffy B in interview at E3 so I wouldn't doubt a big guy at the UT forum knowing just as well (I mean, assuming Mark Rein is a big-wig at epic, which is what I'm getting from this).

In any case, it will be interesting to see what happens with UT3.

Back on the subject of what people play online...
Is Tekken Dark Resurrection online? And is it any good for that matter (like does it play up to PS3 par or does it look like it's on a PSP)?

Im excited about UT3. It not only is using the same engine as GOW, but they are the company that created it, if Im not mistaken, so they are going to be able to harness its power very well! Not to mention it just looks amazing!

CliffyB is the lead game designer of Gears of War. Mark Rein is his boss (VP of Epic Games).

There's going to be an add-on for the game (probably $10) sometime within the next few months.

As for graphics, this is what it looks like. It's a port from the arcade version (and not the PSP version) in native 720p so it doesn't look too shabby. It's not VF5 or Soul Calibur 4 quality, but for a PSN game it looks good.

I sure hope not... Using the PC is easier than a controller, so gameplay maybe a little biased towards the PC players unless you have uber finger skills... Keyboard and mouse is considerably easier to get to grips with. Unless there will be mouse and keyboard support for the console version, then I'll be happy.

I reckon Cross Platform play will not happen, because remember the PS3's OS is closed, which means there may be no way to let PC gamers contact PS3 gamers.

Who is cliffy b first off.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cliff_Bleszinski
He is a long-time game developer that has been around for a while. He might not be the best, but he is pretty good and one of the best known. He has no problem with being in the public spotlight. He is probably one of a few people who can show up publicly dressed like this without anyone having a second thought:

If you are really interested in getting to know the industry, how it works, who makes it work, and who the legends are I suggest reading the book Smartbomb. It basically gives the history of video gaming from a bunch of scientists abusing their lab's super computer after hours to the goliath that it is today. Here's a link at Amazon.

As Duck said that is coming. I'm actually waiting for the online version, as opposed to getting it now and then adding on the patch.

I am still curious why no one has done this. There is even an official, overpriced, Playstation 3 keyboard made by Logitech. I am a huge fan of RTSs, but since most of my gaming has gone console I haven't played them for a long time. The Wii Remote will work well, but without keyboard hotkeys it will be difficult to quickly power up a squadron of soldiers/ogres/whatever.

Yeah, the PS3 version of UT3 supports kb/m.

  • All Plasma's use glass screens, which are highly reflective, and so you see reflections of the things in the room on the screen. 👎
  • All Plasmas are very heavy due to the need for a glass screen. That can add cost and inconvenience when transporting and installing.
I'm a couple days late, but nonetheless:
Not all plasmas use a glass screen, the LG 42PC1D we have here has ClearFilter instead, a thin veneer of plastic that makes it a lot lighter and less reflective.

^That explains it better than I can.

Anywho, I'm definitely looking forwards to Unreal 3, UT04 was a fun game, and this new one looks great, especially if the cross-platform gaming proves to be true.
