PS3 General Discussion

Am I the only one who's happy E3 is over? It sucks there were no demos to play on PSN, but we have the Japan media even on the 17th to look forward too. I cannot wait to see Kojima-chan show us the playable demo of MGS4!

First off, how much does G4 suck? Huh? Yeah, a lot.

They were some big disappointments besides not getting to play any demos, and that were games I was looking forward too, but totally looked horrible. Here are my top Worst Games of E3.

1. Halo 3. (Looks like I wont get a 360 after all. Over-hyping this game was not a good idea.)

2. Resident Evil 5 (Or whatever that crap they showed was)

3. Rock Band - Besides, I do the real thing.

Games that surprised me in a good way...

1. Call of Duty 4- OK, it might be a port game, but it looked so damn amazing! The in-game action they showed on G4 was absolutely jaw-dropping and way better than anything there trailers have shown so far.

2. Kill Zone 2 - This looked amazing, even though I might not get it. The action looked to fast paced for my tastes.

3. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune - Now, I already said I like this game, but from the game play I watched, I'm liking this game a whole lot more. A demo is coming soon, I've read. I hope that's true, 'cause I wanna try this sucker.

So unless you don't know how to stream from your PC/Mac to your PS3 then there's not really a dire need for a bigger HDD, for now atleast.

I have 832 pictures (family mostly), about 2,000 songs, five game demos, 30 videos which includes 2 Beavis and Butthead videos about 60 minutes long each and a bunch of PS2 game saves.

DVDs saved to the HDD look horrible. Whenever there are fine lines of movement, you can see horizontal interlacing at its worst. Bah! The reason I got the new 250GB HDD for my PS3 was to store DVDs and they look bad.

Kinda yeah. I think the only thing that it benefits is the ability to install parts of games onto your HDD, and of course downloadable games as well.

hello, i just got a PS3 yesterday and today i finally got it to connect to the internet and i downloaded the update, but it got stuck on the " plug in the USB cable to the controller and press the PS button". I press it and nothing happens? it just flashes the red light on the controller for a bit and thats it. anyone heard of this problem? thanx. 👍

Is it plugged in as you press it?

Silly question I know, but I got caught out by that.

Heh, sorry to sound like a complete noob over here but how do I get videos to play on my PS3? I've got an SD memory stick plugged in with videos in mpeg form I believe, when I select videos from the SD stick, it says there are no titles.

You must make a folder on the stick titled VIDEO and put the videos in that file. Then, it'll show up.

However, you still can get to the videos on your stick from the PS3. Highlight the 'USB Storage Device' or whatever your PS3 displays the stick as, and then push the 'triangle' button. There should be an option to see what's on the stick. You can find your videos that way, if they're compatible with the PS3. From the stick, you can either 'copy' them to the HDD or watch them from the stick.

Well...
I'm really close to buying a PS3 but I want more info before I will purchase. So... What Games can I download and play by purchasing a PS3?

Online service is free right?
So stuff like demos are all free right?
Also, that would include GT HD?

If anyone could list the games availible for download I would greatly appreciate it.
(not too worried about what sort of movies and trailers are availible)

Btw, I wouldn't mind hearing testimony regarding the online service's performance. I'd also love to hear about the difficulty of setting up a PS3 for a wireless system. 👍

Thanks all!

Also, is there a list of PS2 games that are confirmed to work on the US PS3?

Ok, first of all, to clear your general inquiries up, yes, the online service that Playstation offers is free. All the game demos are free and GTHD is also free. I find that the Playstation Network does its job well. Though I do not feel it is up to par with the Xbox live service, we must remember that the psn is free. The Playstation Store is easy to navigate for the most part, and you shouldnt have any trouble finding the games that you want to download.

Games Available for Download on the Playstation Store:

Nucleus
Super Stardust HD
Go Puzzle
Super Rub a Dub
Calling All Cars
Flow
Go Sudoku
Lemmings
Blast Factor
GripShift
Cash Guns Chaos
Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection

I may have left off some of the older games, redone on the PS3, such as Joust, but I listed the major ones. This list also doesnt include all of the demos that are on the PS store. This would include GTHD.

Setting your PS3 up wirelessly is very simple. I have always had trouble setting mine up, but the only time it did work, was when we had our router hooked up and I connected through the wi-fi on the PS3 system. (I think that most of my problems lie in my internet service, and not the PS3) Anyway, the PS3's internet connections are very simple to set up. It will guide you step by step, and pretty much sets everything up for you.

The online service isn't plentiful in what it offers, but it does its job very well, with little to no problems whatsoever.

As far as a list for PS2 games that will work on your PS3, I havent found one, but all the games that I have tried have worked fine. GT4, TT, some ape escape game that my nephew plays, have all worked flawlessly for me. Anyway, I hope this helps you some!

Definately helps a great deal (lets me know I can keep some of my PS2 games). 👍
+ rep given for the help.
I greatly appreciate it when members contribute in such a positive way (such as helping answer questions for newbies to the PS3).
Thanks again.

This is interesting:

John Yan recently took the time to tour the booths at E3 and came away with his impressions for a few games, but one bit near the end caught our attention above all else. He saw the PS3 version of Colin McRae's DiRT and claimed it looked more refined than the 360 and PC counterparts. We're not worried about the graphics and all that, though. There was something else that piqued our interest.

There was a rumble option in the game's options screen. John asked the folks showcasing the game if the rumble feature would exist in the final product for the PS3 and they answered yes. DiRT is prepared to take advantage of the new rumble feature coming to the Sixaxis controller in a matter of months. Isn't that exciting? The controller isn't out yet, but game developers are already prepared to offer the feature in their games. It's great news for all of us, especially those who really need to feel some vibrations in their hands. You know who you are!

3rd party developers are able to code for rumble already?!

On a similar note...
I noticed that many of the better games on the 360 are multi-platform titles. 👍

Also, I saw an interview with EA's head guy and he dodged a question but did it poorly enough to indicate that next year's Madden game will be developed primarily for the PS3.

Likewise, I'm wondering if more and more developers will continue this trend.

In fact, this is all making me wonder how long it will be before a DOA title is released on the PS3.

@ Kent I will post my opinions about the online, as typing this with a sixaxis is a bit of a chore

[edit]

Just got back in from work saw your post and wanted to answer ASAP but was on the PS3 at the time so as said above its a bit of a pain typing on the sixaxis (memo to self "get a bl**dy key board and mouse for PS3")

Anyway, I found setting up the PS3 on a wirless network very easy, I had already had my PC and mac runnning wirless so it was just a case of turning on the PS3 going to netowrk settings (just like the PSP) and doing a search for the connection, once it had found it, was just a simple matter of selecting it and thats it done, if you have password protected it or have a funny configuration on the firewall on the modem/router then im not sure how to go about this, but if you have set up the firewall/passwords im sure it wont be too hard for you to actually connect it up, If you are familiar with the PSP works, its pretty much the same.

Ive not had any time with the Xbox Live service so I wont try to do a comparison, but I love the free service Sony have put on, easy to find things, and the content is slowly getting better, GTHD been the best thing on it at the moment along with SSHD. As soon as Home comes along I can see it been even better, ans since the service is free Im not complaining. The actual web browsing aspect of the PS3 is quite a joy to use even if the sixaxis isnt great for typing long thins, its definatly easy enough and most important, not that painful to sue especially for quick google or Play.com searches. A mouse and keyboard is recommended for typing sessions, I use the KB and mouse for my Mac (USB) but A good wireless set up would be great.

I personally would think about upgrading the HDD to something bigger before downloading any games as I though that 60gb was going to be easy large enough but its soon starts to run out especially if you plan on having music and video on them, plus a fair few games dump anything from a few hundred meg to a few GB of stuff on the HDD for quicker loadng, and the more games the more space needed.

If you plan on playing PS2 games GT4 Ect, I would think about getting the Memory card adaptor so you can use your saves on the PS2 memory cards. and if you plan to use it for a BD/DVD player it may be worth looking to getting the remote for easy navigation, but if you are used to using the pad for this then it may be a bit of wasted money.

here is a list of most things on the PSN for all regions.

Be good to see another face online and Ive now started to meet people Via the Players met section which allows me to see who Ive played against in games, and then add them to my buddie list, especially those Japanese racers on RR7, those guys are fast but fun to race against.

Great post, Sprite. That answers alot of questions.

Do you guys all use 1080p with your PS3's? I have a 32" Samsung LCD that can put out 720p or 1080i, how will the PS3 look on my TV?

I backup all my DVDs, is it true that backup DVDs don't upscale on the PS3?

thanks :)

No, backup DVDs don't upscale. In fact, they look awful. I guess that's by design to curtail piracy. It sucks, because I have no intention of stealing movies, yet I prefer to have some of my DVD collection on my PS3 HDD. I cannot do that now.

Also Sony is supposed to be adding their Movie download service to the PS Store in the coming months, but this is the type of service I personally wouldn't recommend. You can rent Blu-ray & DVD movies from NetFlix for less, at a higher quality, with no time limit to view it.

Here are some useful links as well for future reference regarding PS3 & PSN Games, as well as PS Store content:
*Keep in mind, Wiki = YMMV, but this is true for just about every source. All things considered, these lists are very useful, and appear to be mostly quite accurate. 👍

As much as it may seem, from various sources, that the PS3 and the PlayStation Stores have very little content, clearly that isn't the case. Frankly there is enough on there to keep you very busy for months at a time. :)👍

It will look great. It will even look great on a standard 480i CRT TV... it just wont be in HD. Many of the advantages to the PS3 have nothing to do with the amount of detail it can generate in HD.

However, it's certainly an understandable misunderstanding as most of the marketing and hype always seem to be primarily focused around its HD capabilities... which are impressive as well, and with a 720p display you'll enjoy much of that as well. 👍

BTW: Although your Samsung "supports" 1080i, it cannot display it at 1920x1080 resolution. It will always scale the image to 1280x720... or more likely 1366x768, as that's the native resolution of most "720p" LCD displays. So if you are using the PS3 on a 720p display, such as yours, then be sure to set the PS3 to ALWAYS output in 720p.

You can experiment, but I'm willing to bet you'll get a better picture in most cases by not feeding it a 1080i signal, and then hope the Samsung does an accurate job deinterlacing it BEFORE scaling it. Most 720p displays do not.

Sorry I can't pass on more rep to you DN, that's a great post. I appreciate it greatly.
I'm very happy to see there is so much availible. I'm sure a few of those demos (especially GTHD) will be enough to keep me happy for some time (not to mention how I will be playing my PS2 games).

Of course, I'm only going to keep 3 ps2 games if I buy a PS3... Those being GT4, TT, and AceCombat 5. 👍

Since I can get the GTHD demo through the US based PSN, do I have to pay for it or is it still free like the Hong Kong region download?

Also, I have a normal TV with nothing special going for it. It's not progressive scan, doesn't have high def, will not anything special (but still a "good" old school TV that's only about 3 years old).
Will the PS3 look bad on that? (gosh I hope not) :ouch:

Yes, GTHD from the US store is still free.

You will also be reassured to know that I play my PS3 on a 15 inch (i think) tv/vcr combo thats got to be ten years old. No, it wont look quite as good, but it still looks very good. I also sometimes play it on the tv in our tv room, which is a 37 inch flat screen, but not hd, or anything special. It looks very good on it. Dont worry about not having an HDTV. Just play, and when the money comes around, or a very good deal shows up, buy an hdtv set. But you certainly wont lose out on all the PS3 has to offer just because you dont have an HDTV. I can certainly attest to that.

Also, the prices on HDTV's are dropping dramatically. And if you can wait just a little while longer, you should be able to purchase a nice 1080p set, for around or maybe less than 1500 dollars. Not to mention you could just go for a 720p set, which is almost as good, for less than 1000. Just as DN. ;)

Yep, GTHD is still free in the US store. The ps3 will look fine on an older tv, as solid lifters said, it just won't be in HD, PS2 games will look about the same (some may look better, some may look a little worse) but PS3 games will still look amazing and very well detailed, especially on medium to large TV

EDIT: tree'd by poetic

Not to worry. I think you are going to be very impressed how good it looks, but by all means, don't let that keep you from looking at 720p or even 1080p displays, as it will even look more impressive! 👍

However, as mentioned earlier, a lot of the improvements of the PS3 over the PS2 and even current competing consoles has nothing to do with resolution... but to get the most out of it you'll definitely want at least a 720p display, and ideally a 1080p with HDMI. :)
