PS3 General Discussion

A bit more exact release dates, (Japan)

PS2 - March 4, 2000

PS3 - November 11, 2006

That is 6 years and 8 months between the PS2 launch and PS3 launch

Somebody brought up the point that the PS2 still outsells the Xbox 360 and PS3. That is a good point because it proves a newer system with better graphics doesn't always sell better than a cheaper, older system with a great library of games.

By 2010 PS3's price would have dropped considerably, blu-ray will be far more popular, and PS3 will have a vast game library. Also in 2010 Xbox 3 will probably launch, but because of what is stated in the above paragraphs, it will most likely will not outsell PS3, so Sony won't rush PS4 to the market.

Instead they will wait 1-2 more years and make PS4 much more powerfull than the Xbox 3, which in turn is good for them.

I have no idea what Nintendo may do

Quick question, does the PS3 have a wireless capability without having to go by a $100 adapter like the X360?

Yeah that's what I meant, built-in wireless capability. (To pick up a wireless signal so I can connect to the internet). You say in the 60GB... what about the 80GB?

Alright then that's perfect, thanks. :) I'd be screwed if it didn't because the only place I can use my wheel is in my room and I'm connected wirelessly to the internet in my room. I'd be damned if I'm going to pay $100 to be able to.

Yeah... it really blows that you have to pay for a wireless device for the 360 and then it's really lame you can't go online with the 360.

But hay... you can go on M$hen... :dopey:

Yeah I didn't pay for it, I just play my X360 online where our router is. I usually only play Halo 2 on it anyways.

No, since PS3s are reliable as a Nintendo product and you'd be better off putting that $110 towards games.
So was the PS2 for a couple of years, until they started breaking in masses.

I would still suggest it.

Although, that's a little steep. I bought a store one for £29.99, including 3 years and 1 year accidental damage cover (about $60 USD)

Judging by how much the blu-ray drive cost, I dont think they went with cheap parts this time around like they did with both PS1 and PS2. And Seeing how things are worse for microsoft than they were for any other console Sony would extend the warranty another year if they start breaking. PS2 had so many great games by the time they started breaking most people went out and bought new ones right away.

Well... No PS3 for me. :(
I talked to the EB games just before going to buy a PS3 (called them on the phone).
Their story switched from about 8 weeks ago when I was going to trade-in everything to buy a 360, at which point they told me I could get $_____ for my PS2 and Xbox.
Today the story changed to me only getting $______-$100. :ouch:

Since I can't get even close to a reasonable trade-in, the deal is off. Now I wait until later this year or next before I buy a PS3 (and by then my opinion may change all together). :indiff:

Oh well, that's the way it goes! :D

Purchase it from Amazon, then sell the new and sealed remote and six Blu-ray movies for about $150, giving you a PS3 for only about $350 not counting what you might get for also selling your PS2 and Xbox!

👍👍

Personally, I've never really understood the importance of playing music during a game. I almost always set the music to "off" in the game settings as I find it distracting and would just as well focus on the sound effects much more so than music... I mean, how many race cars have a stereo? How many soldiers, ninjas & warriors, and dragon riders wear iPods in the middle of battle? ;)
Well, as in movies, sometimes the music can make/break a scene. Look at the War of the Worlds clip in the Funny Video Thread. A quick change of music made a disater scene become hilarious.

Certain fantasy games have epic scores that help encourage the hero in you to come out. Action games can have club-like fast beats that raise your heart rate and encourage adrenaline flow. Scary games can sometimes have eerie music that keeps you slightly on edge so that when the monster(s) suddenly jump out you jump. But all of this depends on the game. Some games don't have background music because the lack of it adds to the game. I really think the effect of the music is determined more by the game design than personal preference.

That said, in Gran Turismo I do not like the in-game music while I am driving. I used to put on my iPod with my driving playlist for when I am in my car, but GT is much faster and I need my audio inputs from my car at 150 mph much more than I need them while cruising down the interstate at 70 mph. I do play the music during replays because it makes my shoddy driving seem more dramatic and cool.

Any way, when I told him he said the PS3 is full of glitches (true?).
Also, he said Resistance was horrible and looked "blocky" (true?).
I am growing tired of the, "The 360 is ten times betterer and I'll prove it when I get my 360 back," argument.

The only glitches I have ever had were when demos would have issues. The full games I have purchased don't have the issues.

Ah, choices, choices... I love it! ;)
That's a good problem to have when you consider that the library isn't stellar yet.

Look for PS4 to appear after 7 or more years UNLESS PS3 sells never take off which I doubt will happen

There is no reason to expect a quick launch of PS4. But there is plenty reason to expect Xbox 3 in 2-3 years
If the next XBox or Wii challenge or surpass the technical abilities of the PS3 I would assume that a PS4 shortly after isn't too unexpected. But looking at how the PS2 is still rolling along even that may not draw Sony to a quick next-gen.

Last question from me, do you think $110 for a 2 year warranty is worth it?
I didn't pay it. If my one-year Sony won't be enough then there is a problem.

Man, that sucks.

I'm curious, how long would it take you to save up another $100? The exchange rate will only go down over time. You could sacrifice all gaming for a time and trade-in now and then get the $100 over time and then buy it, or find some quick way to get $100 and make your trade-in before the price drops again.

Or if it is a principal thing then you could put it all on Ebay and set a starting bid/reserve at the rate EB origionally quoted you.

Are there any other gaming stores around? See what those offer. It just seems to me that $100 is easier to get than it sounds.

Ya, do that. You should be able to get at least $50 for your PS2 from eBay since you won't need it anymore. So that brings it down to $300. With your Xbox, if you're done with all the games it has to offer, you could get $70 for it, excluding games. So that brings it down to about $230.

GameStop/EB IMO always gives you too low of a trade-in price. It's convenient, sure, but unless you can't use eBay, you're best off avoiding them.

Dont you guys understand? Not everyone can shell out 500+tax right away. If he had that kind of money, he would probably have bought it anyway. Not to mention, just because you put those movies up on ebay doesnt mean that someone will buy them. And you still have to shell out the money up front. Im pretty sure that the only reason he was going to buy one was because he would only have had to pay for a few hundred with all of his trade-ins.

Im not saying that your guys' suggestions arent good, because they are, but only if he has the money up front.

I'll be buying one soon, just had a look on trade me and there only selling from $550-$800 for brandnew consoles, some with extra's. There Still $1199 in shops!!!

If i sell my Ps2 with it's magic Key's, games, Swap magic, My G25, My 360 wireless wheel.....Ps3 Here I come!!!

Wouldn't you want your G25 for GT5?

Thanks for the advice guys.
Of course, I'm not exactly in the position to act on that advice so I will probably be waiting until after GT5P is released. 👍
As of now, the purchase I declined isn't too much of a problem. The thing is, I enjoy my 1st gen Xbox and if EB only wants to give me about 50 bucks for the system then I'm just not prepared to make the trade.
I'd rather wait a while and buy the system without lossing my old stuff. 👍

Bottom line:
I'm still interested in the PS3, I just don't think I will be able to jump on the $100 price drop. It's ok though, I'm sure the next semster of school will keep me busy enough to leave no room for gaming. With that in mind, it shouldn't be too long of a wait for GT5P and GT5. :D

Kent, i'd sell your stuff privately then buy the PS3, thats the best way to make the most money.

Hey guys what do you think is better for a first game?

Resistance or F1 CE?

oh i forgot I already posted, someone delete one post or something :D

Foolkiller: Wouldn't you want your G25 for GT5?

I Do, but i'd rather a Ps3, Plus i don't use it that much anymore and im shifting soon so would have to sit on the couch and use it, which after my cockpit would suck:(

Do you want a shooter or a racing type game? Both of them are very good games and most likely worth the purchase to most people; I should say that is, if you are a racing game type of person (I think most everyone on this board will be though). Otherwise, F1:CE may not be for you. The speed of the cars is incredible and some practice will be needed to adjust to the cars' speed.
