PS3 General Discussion

I suppose it was a5m6, my bad...

I was watching G4 this morning, and I was really quite surprised by how negative the reactions to the PS3 were post-E3. I mean, I thought that the PS3 turned out to be okay, but it seems as though they were all against it (They being Adam Sessler, Seth Schiesel from the NY-Times, and Andy McNamara from Game Informer.) Price seems to be the issue, along with low unit counts for launch (2 Million, compared to 1.5 Million for 360), as they put it "lack of good 1st-party titles", etc.. They gave the winners title to Wii for stealing the show, but realistically speaking, they said Microsoft was the clear winner this year.

...Not my opinion, of course, just sharing the news that comes up. I dont completely agree with what they had to say, esp. with PS3 lacking good 1st-party titles. But, when the dude from the NY-Times pointed out that most folks are going to have to wait untill summer 2007 to get their gands on a PS3, I completely agreed with him. Given the popularity of the PS3 and the fact that shipping numbers will be only slightly higher than that of the 360, there is going to be a long, long wait for people who cant get the first ones off the truck...

i was also shocked how much the media was negative about the PS3. they really, really hated the price. 1up was all the time saying bad things about the console... to be honest, the only website to have a good showing of the PS3 was IGN... it´s not that much of a big deal, but something to watch for in the upcoming weeks... they are really helping to turn the public opinion against the PS3...

20GB PlayStation 3 will be upgradeable, says Sony

Wi-Fi and memory card adaptors on the way

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Sony has dismissed rumours that the 20GB PS3 will not be compatible with wireless controllers, and that consumers will not have the option to upgrade the hard drive.

"Both queries to my knowledge are completely false," a spokesperson told GI.biz.

"Both configurations will support bluetooth PS3 controllers. The only non-upgradeable feature of the 20GB configuration will be the HDMI output."

This confirms comments made by Sony's Phil Harrison in a recent interview with GI.biz, where he stated: "You can upgrade to whatever size of drive you like. You can put in any drive that you like - it is a computer, after all."

The spokesperson went on to reveal that Sony plans to release a Wi-Fi adaptor for the 20GB PlayStation 3. Consumers will also have the option to purchase a separate adaptor that will allow the use of memory sticks, SD cards and compact flash cards with the machine.

However, there's still no word as to whether the 20GB PlayStation 3 will make it to the UK at all.

It's not quality-vs-price that upsets me, it's just the price. I can't afford the technology, period, I'm only 16 damnit.

There's been no word on the 60GB PS3 making it to the UK eitherl, it's something that's taken for granted. We don't have any official UK prices yet, and whena Sony spokesman made a rough guess at the UK prices he made a rough guess for both the 20GB pack and the 60GB pack. There is no reason both won't make it here, both are coming to Europe

Thats great news, this now makes the 20gb version a more viable option if you dont have the cash to plump for the 60gb at the launch.

If the sell are low at launch, the PS3 will die. The price of the PS3 won't change for a whole year. Prepare your money & support it as much as you can.

>_>
<_<

I'll tough with my 360 until FFXIII impress me. Though, if it lost exclusive, I'll stick with "my precious".

Trust me Mr Deap, it'll sell. The PS2 here cost £400 when it was released, and shops sold out within hours.

I remember hearing about shops selling it for that even though the MSRP was £300 but I didn't get a PS2 untiol after GT3 had come out. The 60GB PS3 will be around that price, maybe £425 at most.

Both CPU are very similar in a way....

For the lazy type & see only the conclusion:

The key to understanding the developer attitudes expressed in the article is to look at the bold formatted paragraph in the quote above and understand that there's nothing surprising or shocking about this statement. Of course game developers would much rather have an Athlon64 or a Pentium D to work with than either of the two console chips, and of course either of those two CPUs would outperform Xenon and Cell in the first generation or two of console games.

PS3 controller controversy:

So far, PC gamer are right about the Cell being weaker than a PC CPU(For now). Also Sony didn't copy the Wii at all.

Mr Deap
Also Sony didn't copy the Wii at all.

Yes your correct, Sony didnt copy Wii, since Sony had patents on the motion sensor tech since 1996 (or there abouts) but had the actual idea floating around the Sony offices since 1994.

PS3 will sell tons at launch especially in Japan, personally I dont see a problem with the price, but if Japanese shops stick the price sky high then this could hurt Sony, but I rekon that the PS3 will fly off the shelves.

PlayStation 3 as quiet as slimline PS2?
by Bhavin Shah

Reports are suggesting that the PlayStation 3, due to be released in November, will be the quietest of the next generation consoles. In fact, Sony has gone as far as suggesting that noise levels compare with those of the slimline PS2.

Although at first sight this may seem to be a minor issue, it can be frustrating to hear the cooling fans roaring away in the middle of a tense cutscene. This is certainly the case with the PS3's main competitor, the Xbox 360, which has received a lot of negative feedback for its loud fans.

Furthermore, with Sony pushing its consoles as a media device, a noisy fan would definitely ruin the atmosphere if you were watching a romantic scene in 1080p on your 40" TV. Fortunately, Sony seems to be looking ahead, and we'll find out if it succeeds in keeping noise levels to a minimum on 17th November.

Interesting, I hope that's true about the sound levels of the PS3.

hmmm interesting, the 360 was originally going to be watercooled but that was ditched due to cost..... maybe because the PS3 is at a more premium price we will get premium cooling products and systems inside to ensure it opperates silently...... ever more expenisve fans can make the difference.....

Mr Deap

The only reason a PC CPU (AMD, Intel) would outperform a Cell or the multi cored Xenon is because the code is not optimized for the Cell or Xenon. If you were to get the same game, and optimize it for each processor, the Cell and Xenon would come out on top every single time.

YEAH! :sly:

But seriously, why do you think consoles have been able to be on par with PC's as far as graphics? Because the games are optimized to take full advantage of the console's resources. This is why I've always like console gaming more. Because you spend $200-$600 for hardware once and the games look better over time with no more hardware purchases needed. Unlike PC gaming that almost demand at least a bi-annual video card upgrade.

Totally agree, having to upgrade is one thing that I hate about PC gaming. it really sucks when you can't buy a PC game that you really like just because the system requirements are too high.:ouch:

I've upgraded my PC once in 5 years, I spent £130 on a new graphics card not too long ago, only shortly before I bought the card had I started experiencing problems with playing the latest games. That said, the PC originally cost me £850 so despite it being a mammoth of a computer and not having to spend much on upgradesm it's still not a viable alternative price wise to a console thanks to the high initial prices of a gaming capable PC. But no gaming PC ever will be.

Right...so, you made my point very well. Thanks L4S! :)

I intended to, to a large degree but not an ultimate one. PC's are great, but for gaming it's not a viable option to purchase a new PC over a console. If however you already have a PC with a good backbone, upgrading one bit by bit isn't that expensive, over 5 years I've spent around half of what my PS2 cost me, in upgrading it, and the card it has now should easilly last a few more years.

Basically, if your going to buy eaither a gaming PC or a console, the console is by far the better choice. If you already have a good PC and just need one or two new parts, then it becomes a more even choice. If you have a PC full of dataed parts from the motherboard up, then the console will be the way to go. So in general, yes a console is the better value option, but not always.

Depends on what games you like to play really.
I like my PC because I like playing simulations. I mean they are more of a hobby than a game. Mostly motorsports but some planes too. You just cannot find the simulation games or hardware options on the console that you can on the PC for this genre.
I haven't upgraded my PC in about 3 years so it will be time to drop some coin pretty soon if I want to play some of the new simulations with all the bells and whistles turned on.
That said, I do like my consoles too because I can plop on the couch in front of the 50" and have fun.
I'll have a PS3 on my shelf but I don't think it will be at launch.

I'm not surprised at the noise statement. The only thing inside the PS3 that will require cooling is the RSX GPU. Cell won't need a fan as it's very low voltage and runs at ~29°C (@3.2 Ghz). The BR drive will be very quite as it's speed is only 2x compared to 12x DVD drive in the X-Box 360.

So my estimate is that they'll put 2 fans in there, one to cool the RSX and one system fan. That should keep it very quiet.

It shouldn't be too much of a problem for movies.. Even the X360 is quiet when playing DVDs, since it doesn't need any computing power to do so.. all of the "guts" are running on Low. I imagine PS3 will be the same.

I did hear them say that in one of their press releases, though, that it's going to be very quiet. That'll be nice, really, if they can pull it off. The question right now is the "IF". The dev kits are like vaccuum cleaners, noisy as all-get-out.

But, it's got an assload of vents on it now.. if they can come up with a good way to pass air through the unit.. in one side and out the other, that'll help keep the temperature, and thusly the noise, down.

Blue rays speed

Blu-ray drives currently in production can transfer approximately 36 Mbit/s (54 Mbit/s for BD-ROM), but 2x speed prototypes with a 108 Mbit/s transfer rate are in development. Rates of 8x or more are planned for the future.

At 2X it's just a little bit slower than the XBOX 360.

Thats true, but what Sony is banking on is caching. Load times will be dependant on the developer, if they want to load everything thay can then start the game or load some start the game and stream the rest to HDD until its needed. With caching and streaming load times will be lowered.

All so Sony stated at teh press confrence last week that future verison will feature upgraded hardware but games will scale to the system you have like pc games. A 6x BR rom drive is in that upgrade window.

Also the RSX details have changed but Sony wont release the info yet.
