Question to mods. Can I really have all of Thailand as Shemland on the gtp world map?
Feel free to move there and call it whatever you'd like. Just don't be surprised when no one know what the 🤬 you're talking about.
But you're used to that, right?
:P

Shemland has voted in favour of banning the use of a mattress in favour of hay bales for any vacationing North Dakota residents enjoying the glorious state of Shemland, formerly Thailand.

Motion passed.

Hey Jordan, this question is for you, what milestone or "point" in the entirety of GTPlanet's existence do you see as the "crowning achievement" or that you're most proud of?

What is the most consecutive posts ever made within a minute by the same person? Is it 7? :sly:

You're allowed to post another message within 60 seconds of making a previous one? I thought it was like the report function, you can't use it again for a certain amount of time after using it once.

Then explain to me what happened in the GT6 meme thread.

Oh never mind, a mod fixed it. :c

Pretty pointless goal to have as with a couple of clicks, the staff can remove all of them. Or you.

Not, you, you. The general you. Unless you're the one doing it. Then I mean you.

That's a really tough question.

I think I was most proud when I saw the first pictures from the UKGTP meet-ups/parties. Running a website is a solitary and isolated task. Obviously, I knew that people were using and enjoying GTP, but when I saw pictures of large groups of people getting together and having a great time (on another continent, no less) because of something I'd built in my bedroom, it made everything much more real and it brings a unique sense of satisfaction that's difficult to describe.

I hope the "crowning achievement" is still to come, but on a personal level, the GT5 launch party in Madrid was special. I had lost a very close family member to pancreatic cancer just months before, and I had thrown myself into working on GTP as much as possible for whatever brief respite it could provide from the intense grief my family and I were going through at the time.

Receiving that invitation to Madrid brought an incredible sense of validation and recognition to all the work I had done, and it was surreal to actually be at an event for something which I'd followed so closely for so many years. I got emotional and teary-eyed during Kazunori's presentation because I was so grateful to experience something so positive and exciting after such a dark time in my life, and I give full credit to GTPlanet for making that happen.

Nice @Jordan I felt my body tingling reading it.

Is it possible for mods to see the private settings of every member? I have a feeling this has been asked before.

Settings like your email? Yes, but only if we go looking for them, which 99.9% of the time we have no need nor desire to do.

You have had some pretty good ones over the years. But yes, a "crowning achievement" is still to come.

For example, if a car that is in the suggestions section gets added to GT6 and then GTP (or the person nominated) would be credited, that would be special.

My fingers are still crossed for the my popular suggestion.

I have a question, and somewhat surprisingly it's a serious one:

Given that gamers - as a group of people - are amongst the most entitled and 'First World Problem' people on Earth, to the extent that a gun getting nerfed in Call of Duty or the developer of a small free game deciding to remove it from the App Store results death threats being fired off left, right and centre, has there ever been such a threat aimed at a member of staff here? I can't really picture it but since I don't see a lot of what goes on and a lot of 'undesirable elements' must surely have to be filtered out to keep GTP the friendly place that it is, I'm just curious.

I certainly can't speak for every PM that arrives in a mod's Inbox, but I'm sure there's a few creeps that have made threats. Due to the First World nature of most of our members, they might get upset at a ban, but will move onto other things later on. Some rejoin, in varying states of annoyance and/or attitude change, but even 99.999% of them don't pose a real threat. There's been one or two hotheads we've taken steps against, but that's all I'll say on the matter.

Given that people share more information about themselves than ever before, it's still wise to play it cool. Nothing on the internet or sphere of gaming is worth violence, threats, damages, or theft. The worst we get are people claiming we're taking away their rights to Free Speech, threatening us that they're going to get a lawyer, and nothing becomes of it for obvious reasons.

It's a site about video games, it's not a website barred and blocked by a nation because it promotes religious freedoms (or freedoms from religion), personal well-being, and peaceful activities. Although we do discuss those matters, the reasons people are blocked/banned is because they can't follow the house rules of general civility and the law. Big difference.

An unequivocal "yep".

It's not a daily occurrence - it's one of the more rare results of someone who doesn't think rules apply to them being told they've been sanctioned for breaking the rules - but equally I'd need to take my socks off to count the threats of violence and death I've received against me and purported family members, both on here and by PSN.

It's not particularly threatening or scary - I'd need to go through my PMs to even recall who sent the most recent one, as I tend to just laugh and ban them. Or show the message to my wife between the two steps.

Interesting, thanks for the insight. I don't really have anything to add, I was just curious, but it's quite sad that this sort of thing is considered fairly normal on the internet. Why can't people just be nice, like @Danny?

It's kinda sad that it happens.

I mean, they break rules and get punished. Same as everywhere else in the world.

I imagine its just due to the disguise of a username as I doubt (normal) people would do the same to police officers.

I think you would be surprised, these are just the kind of idiots that would scream at the police 'You can't arrest me, I know my rights', shout and swear at them, and then wonder why they are prosecuted.

I always thought those people were just added into late night police camera shows for comedy or something :indiff:

Why is it that moderators can approach people in a tone that would almost certainly get a regular user banned? I know you have to be firm in your job, and it's something we all appreciate on here, but I shouldn't really feel as though I have to treat mods differently to any other member just because they have big buttons. Or small buttons. Or access to a certain hammer.

While some on the moderation staff will sometimes take a firm tone or use a sarcastic tone with others, pay particular attention to what they say. We may use humor, sarcasm, deadpan humor, dry wit, exasperated exclamation or monotone "just the facts, ma'am" responses, but we don't curse. We don't insult.

Because while irony and sarcasm aren't against the Acceptable Use Policy, insults are.

If any of the staff do throw personal insults at other people, please, feel free to report it.

I know none of you insult, but I doubt anyone would think of using that kind of humour towards a mod. Maybe we're just paranoid about the consequences.
