God, that is awful. I saw Dan in the paddock at Homestead a couple years ago when he was with Target Ganassi. They were working on his car and fired it up for the small crowd nearby. I think he went on to win that night. That was my first live Indy experience and I'll never forget it.

R.I.P. Daniel Clive Wheldon. He tweeted only a couple hours back and now he is gone. Accidents like this makes you remember how dangerous motorsport can be.

The accident if I'm seeing it correctly looks like Dan kept his foot in it while others slowed down slightly more due to seeing the accident first. Short time to react and the cars in front of him came together due to slowing down and Dan got airbourne by them cars acting as a ramp. The extra speed he carried proved to be deadly considering the destination he was heading for. It was a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. A huge loss for motorsport and to those that knew him personally.

R.I.P dan we lost another great driver :( i sensed something was bad when they covered his car down after it happened...i rember a few drivers saying before the race they will be lucky to finish it without a crash what a sad race :( didnt like the way Eurosport cut us off so we couldnt see the tribute laps

I still can't believe he's gone just like that. I was crying while watching the tribute lap, and I have never done that before over something on TV.

Probably a bit lame, but several friends and I are going to do our own 5-lap tribute at Indy with FGTs tonight.

I was watching on TV... as far as I could tell, the whole crash started when someone became uncomfortable on the high line and tried to move down, but clipped the back wheel of another car. From there he slowed down and either lost control, or tried to swereve in behind the car he'd clipped but forgot to check his mirrors first. The back half of his car hit the front half of the pink one, the pink one went over him, and things just got worse from there.

I was crying while watching the tribute lap, and I have never done that before over something on TV.
Wheldon's accident was that rare and terrible thing - a sportsman's death, televised live. People felt the same way when Senna died.

After Henry Surtees, I had hoped I would never witness another fatal accident live on TV. I tuned in tonight to watch Dan attempt to win the race from the back of the field and win the $5 million. I'm completely gutted. RIP Dan.

Yes. I wasn't watching the races where Senna and Earnhardt Sr. died so this was a completely new experience for me, and I never want to see that 🤬 again.

People who willingly risk their lives in the name of speed will always be revered in my book.

A pic from HMS in 2008. He got 3rd place that night, actually. RIP DAN.

After watching the replay of the incident there was no way he could have avoided the crash and was just a victim of unfortunate circumstances, He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, it could have happened to any of those involved in that incident :(

RIP Dan Wheldon

RIP Dan.

From an IRL and motorsport fan from Malaysia.

It's was shocking but that crash, i don't see anybody could have survive that.
200-300kph topside of the car first. It wasn't design for that.

Also followed him a fair bit being from the UK, it was a horrific crash and my thoughts are with his family. This is an awful day for the world of racing to lose such a great young driver.

RIP Dan Wheldon.

Didn't see it happen, but just saw the news. I can't believe it.

Is anyone else hurt in this accident?

I didn't get to see any TV coverage of this crash until I saw Speed Center. Terrible news as one of the finest racers in the series passes away like this. Absolutely horrific. My thoughts and prayers go out to all whom have known and loved him. We've lost one of the most talented racers in any discipline of motorsport in any motorsport series.

Surely... rest in peace, Dan Wheldon.

I met Dan this year in Indy. He signed my pit pass. Extremely nce guy, always had a smile on his face. Still can't believe it.
A truly great driver and a great man. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

RIP Dan. You will be sorry missed.

Another driver gives his life for a sport he loves.

Unfortunately, no matter how much motorsport governing bodies try desperately to improve safety, tragedies like this will always be a painful reminder of the inherent dangers motor sport drivers face on a weekly basis

We can only hope that these kind of tragedies become even more of a rarity with each passing year.

RIP Dan

This is the 6th time I've seen a driver die in a televised race. You never forget that. Thankfully it's getting rare, but anybody that thinks racing is "safe" is fooling themselves.

The way this one happened it could have been any driver in the field. He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
