How many hours are you into the game and have you watched any your own replays to see how you perform with your teammate?

I learned that while it may look like your teammates are making a lot of mistakes when it comes to going for the ball and positioning, in reality, it could be you who's disrupting the flow of the game.0

On the off-chance that any of you looked at the Rocket League toys and were dissapointed by them not asking Hot Wheels to make the toys...
Well...

I don't care for the bone shaker or Twin Mill, but still I choose to react with: "NO FRIGGIN WAY!"

This, absolutely. Communication is vital to success, and if you're not able to communicate then learning to read your partner is more important than learning to read your opponent. My buddy and I started communicating consistently and we've gone from Challenger I to Challenger III without a couple hours of getting the communication down. As annoying as it sounds, we started by saying everything we were doing. The first game was basically "Alright, I've got kickoff, that was a bad one, look out. Going for mid right boost. Going up the wall. Got it, that might be center. No, he's gonna get the save, get back. Careful his buddy is coming in for the shot. Alright good clear. Pass right. Got it, going up for it, boddy the goalie. Got it!, good work!" and no chit chat. Then when you start learning eachother's habits it becomes much easier to only relay the important stuff.

There was a point in time where I deploy quick chats everywhere such as " I got it", "go for it", "centering" and "defending" to indicate commitment and my position.

Now that I see most people playing sufficiently without, I've been trying that too. It would seem over time you know when to expect things from people. And if you are not intending to go for the ball, rotate back, but make it clear that you're intending to get behind your partner when returning by driving within their view (whenever possible) when they're in ball cam.

Some people you play with though don't rotate like you do. Sometimes, it's not the "I'm in front so I'll go for it first" playstyle. Some employ the "If I can reach it, I'll go for it, even if I'm farther away", while others use the "I'm unsure if I can hit it if I go for it now, so I'll wait a bit". Those that wait when (based on the fact their partners are waiting behind them) probably should be challenging may upset their teammates who saw an opportunity to regain ball possession go amiss.

I tend to upset teammates who are more skilled than me whenever I don't trust their wall passes enough to commit to a shot, especially in twos when i'm the only guy to cover the net should it get cleared.

I definitely make mistakes, mistakes aren't the problem. It's teammates wanting all the points and goals, I've watched replays many times which confirms my frustration.

I have one mate who is over eager and constantly knocks me off the ball trying to score. We communicate but everyone wants to be the hero, especially as we have a rule where you have to do 10 pressups if you fail to score 100 points.

I tend to play keeper/sweeper so I accept that sometimes my points total will be pants. Yet still I get ripped on by my team mates for my lack of points.

Alright, I've gone long enough: the game is on sale on PSN this week. Time to see what all the fuss is about!

Edit: damn you PS4 players. Can't talk to you guys in-game.

Seems like you guys are going for the same ball too often, which to me says you're thinking and responding to situations the exact same way. I think you guys need to stagger your positions more to avoid aiming for the same ball.

The general 'rule' I told myself to follow is that while we consider a person's blindspots with ball cam on, we should be constantly thinking in the back of our heads, if my teammate up ahead who is in possession or is contesting for possession of the ball, if he/she loses/misses the ball, who is going to cover their back? In a 2v2 situation, the answer is obviously you, the one who isn't in possession of the ball. In 3v3s, that's a bit more complicated depending on how you guys like to structure your rotation methodology, but if it helps, you can deploy the same idea I mentioned before:

If you can see someone in front who's in possession of the ball, you let them do their thing, remember that they can't see you so they can't adjust their positioning in accordance to you, but stay far back enough so that you can cover the possibility of them losing possession of the ball as well.

If you can see both your teammates, you hold the biggest responsibility for making sure the ball doesn't go past you, since you have no one else to cover you if you screw up. So stay the furthest from the ball to cover all possible directions the ball can fly in (but don't be a dupe and sit in net when the ball's on the other half of the field).

If you moved up, and you know that you have teammates behind you, but you don't have a good chance of keeping, regaining or at least knocking the ball out of their possession, just rotate to the back of the line. If someone tries to get the ball up high and over you and you don't feel you can reach it without having to reverse a bit first, I'd just rotate back.

This is a very linear structure of rotating, and has its limitations at a higher level due to its inflexibility, I'd say it's a good place to start practicing this until you guys know how to work with each other in various situations where mixing up the rotation shows its benefits. Perhaps it's something you can try with your friends for a while.

Haha that's what i often do then get ribbed for low points. Problem is I'm in goal, i see my 2 mates going for the same ball on the wing, then often they're both ball watching and indecisive, so after a while of boredom i think F this I'm going to attack. Then my indecisive friends let the opponents get the ball unchallenged and one hit later it's a goal as I'm leaving my goal area. The timing of this happening so often gets annoying.

It's better with friends, i would recommend staying away from competitive ranked for now as the games aren't as enjoyable.

yea this is my frustration here, when I'm going for a ball my mates can see me yet they decide to rush in clearing both the ball and me, doing our opponents job. I often just play sweeper wether in attack or defence. Scores me less points but my main priority is not letting in soft goals.

We played last night an won 6 games straight, but even then one member was chasing everything including my shots, stole 3 goals in one game. In one game he tried to steal my goal which was 100 % a goal with a few seconds left of the game and he actually diverted it and the other team countered and won the game. It's a lot worse with randoms.

Sounds very similar to me with that

They both decide to go get boost as the ball gets chipped towards me. I charge out to get completely done over by the 3 of the other team.

I don't know how the console players are overall, but a lot of PC players tend to frown upon having console players on their team... honestly seems like an elitist thing as I've played with both really good and bad players.

PC players tend to be okay overall and I can play decent with most randoms, so maybe I don't have it as bad as you, but again, unless we ever play together, I'll never know.

I love the new Twin Mill from the Hotwheels update, I changed to it from the Dominus and I'm just finding aiming my aerials a little easier and overall I'm playing better, although that could also be because I finally started playing 1v1s (my first game at level 52, not too late right?) and now feel a little more confident when my team mates are nowhere to be seen, whether I'm trying to score or just hold up play while team mates fetch boost, type in the chat, text people, eat snacks etc.

I'm on XB1 and play with cross-platform on all the time, one thing I notice is that the PC players are less likely to spam the chat when I make a stupid mistake (whether that's them being more forgiving, or they just expect it...), unless they're actually typing stuff themselves in which case I don't see it, now XB1 players that's a whole 'nother story.

The only time I use chat is if completely off the ball, using ball cam, I ram through the opposition cars. Then its double down for me which is "sorry" "sorry" "sorry" "chat has been disabled for 1 second" "sorry" "chat has been disabled for 4 seconds". Or if I make a silly boo boo in goal and then its "what a save" "what a save" etc.

The Twin Mill has decent turning radius and grip when sliding. Could be better when sliding on the wall. The triangular part of the nose is actually not part of its hitbox, making it a shorter car than it appears to be.

The Bone Shaker, being the hot rod based off the same car as the Backfire, shares similar turning radius and grip as such. Wouldn't recommend if you want to make the best out of your game.

You can only text chat with those on the same console. PS4 players and I can't chat to each other.

Here's another gif of mine:

I'm pretty sure my hours in the game are either in or close to the four digit numbers, however that doesn't mean I'm able to take any sort of consistent calculated shots.

I still get some amazing games from time to time, but there's a good reason though why I never choose to wear that annoyingly unrepresentative "legend" tag that I acquired through attrition. :dopey:

I was so close to reaching Rising Star in doubles and standard and then the last 2 days happened :grumpy:, I don't know what terrible actions I did to deserve this. I pretty much exclusively play doubles with the same friend and for the most part we work well, except when he goes AFK unannounced in the middle of a match for long enough to get kicked, but I've accepted this is just what happens when playing with them and I just play slightly more defensive most of our games. Although these last 2 days it's taken me from very nearly Rising Star to just barely hanging on to Challenger Elite.

Playing in standard though has been horrible, 7 losses in a row, I will own up to making several mistakes which led to goals but I should have known what was going to happen after the first 2 losses. Loss 1: We score about 30 seconds after kickoff, one of the opponents leaves making it a 3v2, except one of my team mates decides they will play for the other team, we lose in overtime. Loss 2: As soon as the kickoff is taken a team mate leaves, the 2 of us hold it at 0-0 until we let one in with 7 seconds to go. Loss 3 I can only laugh about, I missed the ball and another team mate who had gone to collect boost from the opponents half for some reason hit me on his way back, in to the ball which then made its way past our last man and in to the goal. And loss 4 came down to a team mate full speed removing me from the goal as I was about to make the save in overtime. I don't know why I continued.

On the bright side, now I think I've seen it all so I can't be shocked anymore .

Me last week: "Oh, okay, I'll try it out, see what the fuss is about."
Me this week: "I've played this nearly every night, and plan to continue this."

I'm not particularly good, of course. The aerial training took me a while to get 10/10 on, and that was only the first portion! But, when I'm playing online, I don't feel tremendously under-qualified, so that's good. I've made a few bone-headed moves (like scoring on my own goal), but that's to be expected.

Does everybody play with Ball Cam? I'm assuming it's usually off, but until I get a better idea of where exactly I am in relation to the ball, I'll continue playing with it almost exclusively on.

Most people have the ball cam turned off for most of the time, just turning it off occasionally for things like precision shots or when returning for boost. Some have it so that the ball cam is only on when the button is held down, but that's mostly people that have played the previous game (Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket Powered Battle Cars), where that was the default setting.

Edit: Welcome to Rocket League. Don't get too mad at your teammates ;)

Pretty much everyone I've seen play use the ball cam 90% of the time, and only switch it off for collecting boost, destroying/bumping players or when dribbling the ball.

Edit: Damn too slow

So, after some spirited performances I currently find myself sitting at Solo Challenger III Division IV, closing in on a career high Challenger Elite...

Hoping I can keep getting some decent matchmaking and not given someone way above my level but hoping I can get to Elite finally!

The pros also have 2000-3000+ hours in the game, how many have you got? :D
I always thought they would have that many. I'm gonna calculate how many hours I've played.

I bought a load of top games that i really wanted, haven't started any of them since i bought Rocket League a year ago. I use ball cam unless im going for a boost or blow a car up. I still score own goals so don't worry about that.

My advice to get better is to try flying shots etc often in games, me and my mates didn't bother flying for ages until we came across a real good flyer and got murdered.

From the day I got into this, I've almost played a 3+ hour session every night. Something about this game really clicks with me.

I've got ball cam on most of the time. I regularly turn off ball cam if I no longer need to know where the ball is (aka "Need boost!"), or if I'm dribbling, or doing grounded air-dribbles. I'm going to start turning off ball cam for backboard redirects though, because I find it difficult to gauge the angle the ball is going to contact the wall at with it on, and seeing my own car's trajectory.

but there's a good reason though why I never choose to wear that annoyingly unrepresentative "legend" tag that I acquired through attrition. :dopey:

I feel the same way. At times I feel good enough that I bring out the tag again, but then I start playing like poo, and then my self-conscience kicks in going "how have you played this much and still can't do this right!?"

Steam says 25 hours.

You know what's funny? I said the same thing when I first started back in June in regards to how difficult I found aerials to be. This is where I am at meow:

Looks like it's that new stuff time again. Looks to me like aerials will be an advantage..... sooooooooooo sucks to be me.

cool/funny things that happened during that 600-1000hr timeline

Also just making this short to test different video encoding settings.
