Since Indy was finally cut off for corner cutting, let's discuss the new course we were given today.

Credits to Dr.Wankel for creating this mosaic.

one thing i must make mention of. the spawn point.
it starts you way too slow and way too close to the start line.
ive had to resort to driving backwards 2 turns behind the spawn just to gain enough speed to pass the start line at a reasonable speed. its at least good practice to feel how the 4wd system pulls you forward on these tires.

also i think PD/Sony/Nissan/Whoever picked this randomly generated track on eifel just to poke fun at us. JUST LOOK HOW MUCH FREAKIN GRASS THERE IS.

Why does this matter? If you are consistently attempting hot laps you never have to restart your session. The first lap is $hit, anyways, as your times aren't fully up to temp.

Got up to 11th in the west on this track, and that's enough for me at the moment. Unless I'm in jeopardy of dropping out of the top 16 overall, I'm not spending any more time here.

Just as i was about to come here ashamed for putting up a very dirty John Deere-esque lap, i found out that almost everybody was "going grass" in this one.

I hated at first, then liked the track.

Based on errors and seeing how others are using grass, i´m pretty sure i´m able to get in the 51´2-51´4 range. My current time (52´2) has a grotesque mistake after T2.

Have to clean that up.

It´s a shame because i wanted to drive more with my lovely SuperGT GTR, but this combo is very important.

I've been working at Eifel all day and can only get down to 2:53.621.

Here is my replay. Please point out any mistakes you see as I'm out of ideas to reduce my time. Forgive the awful quality and over-exposed video.

Well i just spent another hour at Eifel, a total of 3 hours spent here today.

I finished off my run tonight with a clean 1.51.453. This is a fun track and you can gain around .3-.5 by going john deere on it, but I don't want to do that until I am in danger of falling out.

Just threw this track map together for all of us to use, might help in describing. Feel free to post this in the OP. Let me know if I left out any turns or numbered too many.

Really fast man. I think I've spent 2 hours on it and after getting to 52.3 on the first 50 mins I got stuck. I think I'm burned from the other track

Snider,

Work on letting the car roll through the corners a bit. I found it was better sometimes to just have no pedal travel in the middle of some corners.

Turn 1 for instance I start braking right after the pit exit line but I don't go more than 60% or so, then i try to release the brake and let the car coast until I can put some throttle down.

Turn 2/3, down shift to 2nd and kick the back end out to get a good exit.

I learned at Toscana that patience with the pedals takes a ton of time out and it works the same here.

This track has corners ...EVERYWHERE!! lol

It's going to take me a while to get the hang of it, don't know how the top guys get the times they have...seems impossible w/o having to practice more than a day!!

Choate, you're a life saver! I was on track to beat my pb by ~1.2s when an invisible curb snatched my left rear just before the hill above the final corner and sent me for a spin. After that, I was able to work my time down to 2:53.096 and I know I can go faster yet. Thanks a bunch, mate!

I cannot believe how many times I have to remind myself of that. I can be so impatient with my pedal inputs, I may have to write it in big letters and put it on the TV. :dunce:

I got down to a 2:52.7 for tonight but I know that more speed is possible, especially at T1. I swear I've hit this corner without going below 83 mph but I'll need to check my ghosts to see if I'm just imagining things.

This is one of the hardest things to get comfortable with in real life. I've spent a lot of time in my '07 Mazdaspeed3 practicing this - autocross and track days. It's really uncomfortable but man does it make you fast.

Well done Choate, really solid game technique and lots of it will transfer to the real world (except the downshifts mid corner, no one's done that since Mark Donohue). Time to practice your heal-toe cause you'll need it at Silverstone.

I just wish the new track had a solid rotation point coming off the brakes, like the last corner at Laguna, hardest thing to master per Sir Jackie.

What is everyone's marker and line for the uphill right with off camber on the apex? (T8)

Having trouble loading ghosts/replays.

The problem I have with zero throttle is it doesn't apply to high compression, high revving engines (14:1, 8500 rpm), which is what all of my real-world track time has been in. With that much engine braking, zero throttle mid-corner quickly induces oversteer, so you're always on the throttle just enough to keep the drivetrain unloaded. Just never realized my real-world experience was having such a negative impact on my in-game performance.

snider, i totally understand where you are coming from. Every once and a while I take to the track in my late model gto and you have to keep some throttle in it almost at all times unless you want to be swapping ends lol.

But with this setup mainly because it's 4wd is the reason that staying off the pedals in the corner is better. If you just stay on the throttle a bit the front tires are trying to accelerate, causing dreaded understeer. If you can wait just a sec and then apply a higher amount of throttle, say dump it real quick then you might be able to get just a bit of oversteer coming out!

This combo makes it very noticiable the fact that GT5 has a physics bug when cars are going on the grass.

If your suspension setup is right, you will achieve more speed on the grass. I tested the X2010 on the Indy oval course, and if you take the grass on the back stretch, you will achieve a higher top speed.

It´s absurd.

When the wheels go airborne, the engine keps reving up, and when you come down again you get the benefit of having this higher RPM.

I believe they forgot to code grass physics thinking that it wouldn´t be an issue.

Thank u for this map! I have not been able to get on and try this yet but will print this out for study & analysis before I do and I'm sure it will help a great deal!

My head works with numbers so I know that I have to cut 5 seconds in 4 days to make it through. Having that in the back of my head all the time KILLS my patience. I usually end up pushing both pedals halfway through the turn trying to keep the back end in check for some stupid reason. I keep telling myself I need to be disciplined, but I think I really need to follow my instincts. :dunce:

Somehow I don't think a 1:55 is going to cut it

@RSnider and Choate

I feel you guys. My real world habits/instincts (good ones) often hurt my performance in this game. How you apply the throttle and where, it's all just a little bit different than in real life (not dramatically different, but we all know that as you approach the limit of performance of any car, precision inputs down to the .1% throttle/brake/steering input can mean the differents of many tenths for each corner.) I continually, still, have to tell myself to do different things that my instincts tell me in this game to go fast. I get that thought process going, and then I can really start to fly. But in can be difficult to always have to overcome your instincts in such a way - which I hope does come back to bite me later in the tournament.

I find this track with this car and tire combination to be an absolute joy to drive. The flow of the sections and the variations in elevation and camber really makes you exercise patience and throttle control to properly hit your apex points. I was able to post a 52.1xx after about an hour of lapping but I did run wide onto the grass at T3 and T19 exits. I actually ran that lap on the first lap of one of my stints (so much for cold tires) and did not intend to run wide, nor have it be my fastest lap time. I spent the rest of the night trying to string together a better lap but small mistakes each lap never allowed me to get out of the 52.2-52.3 range. Hopefully I can run a tidier lap tonight and shave off those five tenths that I know I can get before I really have to start looking for time.

Great lap, anywhere in the 52's is very fast here, and a high level of driving. That said I think 51's will be the target for a seat in round 3.

I was stuck at 54 until i went to toscana and found out that it was faster to get off the pedals and let the car rotate through and keep the momentum up for acceleration. Then I went back to Eifel and immediatley droped to the 52,s and from that point on I tried going faster and faster without resorting to mowing grass.
