And I think for the American market, GT-86 name sounds too funky and might steer people away, while BRZ sounds more normal.

Actually, I think Americans prefer letter and numerical names instead of plain names. If you're familiar with the father of the Z, Mr. K (Yutaka Katayama) of Nissan, he knew that the Fairlady name wouldn't stick in the US of A. So, instead of using Fairlady, he used 2(4/6/8)0Z. And yes, even though that was many years ago, just look at how many car manufactures use letter and number combos nowadays. Both GT-86 and BRZ work for me at least.

Well, same old engine and a giant, gaping maw. Looks somewhat messy to me. The name I don't really care about tbh, and the tail lights look o.k. now at best. I'd rather have a hard-top Miata.

Also, it's pronounced "Bee-Arr-Zed"

Everyone's hot and bothered about the looks of the 86, and I'm over here thinking, "Wow that ain't half bad."

Same. I thought the original looked great already and this facelift isn't all that bad.

Also with Scion and the FR-S name now basically going away, shouldn't the thread title begin heading towards "Toyaru GTRZ" or "Subota BR86"?

It can probably just be named the "86 thread" for simplicity's sake. That, and nobody actually buys the Subaru in comparison to the Toyota, do they? I'm fairly sure sales are a tiny proportion between the two.

Of my friends that bought one, most of them bought the Subaru...

With the way the facelifts are looking, I think sales might shift toward the Subaru offering.

Reported sales in the US by manufacturer, from the car's inception in May of 2012 through December of 2015:

Scion FRS: 54,314 (68%)
Subaru BRZ: 25,533 (32%)

The FT86 boards have been charting the sales on a monthly basis and it was interesting to note, for the first 18 month, where Scion's 'pure price' (selling the cars at sticker price only) was the better option over Subaru dealers who were gouging the price when the car was new and there were few to be had, the FRS outsold the BRZ by more than 3:1. For the last year, Subaru dealers are now willing to discount and in some cases are selling the premium BRZ model at or under the FRSs base price, the ratio has fallen to a bit under 2:1. (Still in favor of the FRS but less than it was).

The main reason for me choosing the FRS over the BRZ was due to an awful experience my wife and I had at 3 different Subaru dealers here in the area back about 12 years ago. We bought a new Legacy GT wagon and the car was a lemon and we were treated like dirt at every dealer we went to and I vowed I would never, ever buy another Subaru so long asI lived in this area. Well, that and I felt the front of the BRZ was kind of ugly. But I think I prefer the facelift BRZ over the face drooped 86. At least in pictures.

Thanks for clarification on the numbers - bit better than I thought for the BRZ, but the Scion still outsold it. I think the proportion is even greater here in the UK.

Also, I agree on the styling. I actually thought the FRS was the best of the lot, even over the GT86 we get in the UK - simpler and cleaner, and all ours came with a nasty spoiler. But post-facelift, I think the Subaru is probably the more attractive.

I can recall seeing only one BRZ here in Plymouth, but several GT-86s. I've actually seen as many new Mustangs as I have 86s too, near enough.

After years of renders, Toyota has actually produced a Shooting Brake variant of the 86. Only as a concept though.

That rear would be painfully hard to see out of in the real world, the 86SB could do with a higher roofline at the rear if Toyota were to change their minds and put it into production.

My Fiesta has more useful trunk space than that ha! I kinda like this, I've been considering the FRS (once they re-brand it to Toyota sometime soon and sell it as the 86 and not FRS), would be cool to see a shooting brake. But something tells me this won't go further than a concept...

I definitely like the new tail lights. I'm not completely sold on the new front end but I'm sure I'll like it once I see it in real life with a UK number plate filling the void.

Hopefully I'll get a chance to check it out in a few hours. Just waiting for the sun to rise so I can wash my car ready for the Festival of 86 today.

-> The only sad part about this 86 other than it won't make it to production, is that there are no interior pics ANYWHERE in the interwebs... :indiff:

-> ...
I see no reason for interior pics when it's more than likely the same layout.
^ I'm just curious to see the greenhouse (ie. visibility) difference compared to the regular model, plus how much roomier the cargo/boot compartment.
