Just got back from the Festival of 86 and I saw this concept in the flesh. The body is noticeably longer and the back seats are definitely more usable. The cargo space is not that much different; you stand your shopping bags upright rather than laying them down but that's about it. Okay, maybe it's a bit more than that, but not 'get down on your knees and thank God you're alive'. With the back seats down there appears to lots more room except there is still a rear bar across the middle of the space (in the 86 this is incorporated in to the parcel shelf).

The car needs some more tweeking around the door and side windows but this is only to be expected in a concept car. As for the rear visibility, you may lose some of the height to your view but looking back doesn't seem obstructed assuming the rear panel will be glass like the CRX.

Tetsuya Tada (86 chief designer) was on hand, as he is every Festival, and he says the balance will be the same as the normal 86. If that's correct, and he should know, then there may be a market for this. I'm still not sold on the look but this is still just a concept and I'm reserving judgement 'til I see what a true production model would look like.

Sorry, no personal pics as camera is broken.

^ Seems like this concept shooting brake is more like a panel van exercise. :indiff:

That is with the rear seats folded down. As with most concept cars the different shaped windows are just black plastic because it's too expensive to make auto glass for one-off vehicles.

You can see the rear bar clearly though. It really intrudes in to the usable space.

Now an owner can fit 8 tires out the back when they head to the track.

They won't as it's pretty much exactly as small/big as the regular GT86's boot. Well, except the sloping of the roof of course.

I've taken mine to IKEA, and have no need for more space :dopey:

Here's a good shot to see how different the roof line is. You can see the original window has had a black wedge painted from the apex back to represent where the new window line would be.

I would much prefer they make a lift-back. It's less of a styling and visibility compromise. Remember the original 86?

Nobody really does this anymore sadly. Seems like this use to happen more often. Mustang coupe vs Mustang hatch. S13 coupe vs S13 hatch, etc. I miss body configuration options.
I miss simple design full stop

It was fine when we all first saw the FT-86 Concept. A baby LFA is how I saw it. The AE86 was an evolution of the Corolla yet, it was a baby Supra.

Toyota painted themselves into a corner with the 86. Had they made a Volvo C30 type hatch, it would work better, visually. I wonder how engineers would fair using a Corolla Hatch with 86 running gear(like what Nissan did with the Juke-R).

Was that intentional? Because my goodness, that would make my skin crawl to see that on a new car lot.

It is an interesting idea, at the very least. Adding some practicality to the car is a welcome change, and although legs may still need to be removed to fit nicely in the back, there'd at least be a bit more headroom. Thing is though, at least for me, if they were to do a shooting break, I feel like it'd make much more sense as a Subaru than as a Toyota, given the models available from each. If Toyota wants more variants on the chassis, this, along with a sedan, would do well to help recoup costs.

Was expecting more from the performance package... I thought the handling was the only thing everyone already agreed was perfect.

Give it time, they recently teased something they'll be showing off at the Wicked Big Meet next month.

I think they made a misstep by not changing the engine up more than they did. My experience with the 2 liter wasn't very pleasant. It doesn't have much torque but it also doesn't seem/feel to enjoy being revved out either. A bump in displacement would have been great I think. My Boxster has almost identical power/weight, but it has more torque and is so sweet to rev out despite almost 1000rpm less at the top. The ZN6 could be so much better with a better engine. The car isn't selling well so the very minor revisions for the facelift is pretty fascinating. I think some executive is trying to kill the project off.

“It will definitely be above the fans’ expectation, because if you supply what all the fans really want, nobody gets really surprised or impressed, so wait and see, we provide something that will be really surprise.”

Too bad Toyota won't do for the AE86, what Nissan did and reclaim old 240Zs and resell them for $20,000. THAT would be a surprise!

The baby LFA just hasn't worked as hoped when the FT-86 Concept was shown. Might have done better if it looked exactly like that with interior and all. Even the Gazoo Turbo may have done a bit better as an STI version.
