Just seen the result and I am dissapointed but I am over it now and if thats what the people then thats what they can have.
I don't think independence is necessarily over over because of this result. The people have indeed spoken, but you only have to look at the result in Glasgow to see that the UK government has a lot to think about. Independence still may happen, but for me this was the wrong time and the wrong way. In the meantime keep calm and, well, you know the rest.

Ähm. Is the result good or bad?

About 45-48% of the country will be disappointed, but it is most certainly going to end up in devolution all round for all 4 home nations.

The referendum has galvanised politics, which is surely a good thing. Now it is important to maintain this level of interest for each election!

I kinda felt that it might be No with a few more percent over what the polls predicted. Half the country is going to be unhappy for quite some time. Only 4 of the 32 councils voted Yes, but two of those were the biggest in Scotland.

Now I guess we see how fast Westminster get out those devolution promises. It's probably going to take much longer than they insinuated.

I didn't know you had had a republic referendum as recently as 1999. Although I can see how voting to keep a hereditary monarchy is a bit odd.
Like I said, the decision came down to the wording of the referendum - the people wanted to choose their leader directly.

It's probably no coincidence that our current Prime Minister is a staunch monarchist and one of the leaders of the pro-monarchy movement in 1999.

Full-time result from Hampden Park in the super duper Old Firm derby:

Yes 45-55 No
Att: 3,619,915

Honestly, it's a bigger majority than I thought it would be.

I still can't get over how few Scots there are actually in Scotland. Isn't it something like 33% of the landmass but only 10% of the population of the UK? Bear in mind that there's an estimated 800,000 Scots in full time education or working in the rest of the UK, it's a wonder they ever bump into each other! ;)

I wonder how different the outcome would have been had Scots not in Scotland been allowed to vote.

Yeah it has a population equivalent to Singapore, a city state with only 19 square miles of land mass! Most of Scotland, a bit like Canada, is empty.

The No vote would have likely been even higher, Scot's outside of Scotland way more likely to vote in favour of the union as most reside in England.

I'm surprised by the scale of the no vote, but economically, a great result for the UK overall.

Pound up a full 1c against the Dollar and Euro, FTSE up too.

Hopefully this distraction will now go away and we can get back to driving the economic recovery.

I agree with Robin - there is some 800,000 Scots living in England, Wales and NI, and I would imagine that the comfortable majority would have voted No... as for international expats, I don't know - many are fiercely patriotic and wax lyrical about how wonderful Scotland is (albeit not wonderful enough for them to ever contemplate coming back).

Interesting table incoming:

It's a breakdown of the percentage of electorate per electoral region and likelihood of that region voting yes/no. If you regard 0-3 as safe No and 7-10 as safe Yes:

Safe No: 24.5%
Safe Yes: 33.1%
Marginal: 42.4%

Well, that'll be fun. Interesting where the safer Yes/No regions are clustered.

Obviously as it's come from the Scottish Parliament, it's another chunk of BBC bias...
So "Yes" votes came from West Dunbartonshire (2), Glasgow (5), North Lanarkshire (6) and Dundee (9), while "No" votes came from everywhere else.

So much for the PA/Scottish Parliament straw poll!

Slightly disappointed, would've been exciting to witness the Scottish independence.
Now there's no way to actually tell what's better for the Scots.

I guess the fear mongering from London was too effective afterall.

If the referendum has done anything, it has energised millions of nationalists and made many of them pledge to remain engaged in politics on social media for ever more.

👍 With it being big news in the rest of the UK too, i hope this resurgence in interest in politics will at least last until the general election.

Now Cameron et al will have to deliver devolved powers to England, not just Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

I assume that you mean Northern Ireland as opposed to The Republic of Ireland. I'm not quite sure how you deliver devolved powers to a separate sovereign state.

DK
I'm just waiting for NI's reaction.

The assembly will no doubt be clamouring to get in on the devolution giveaway (Robinson already hinting at that today), but given how badly they have handled our existing powers - owing millions in fines to the Westminster treasury no less - I won't be surprised if they aren't taken seriously, no matter what Scotland get in the end.

God bless 'Merica! Up there with 'USA Wins 1-1'! :D
