Since the new arival of baby Micah, we have been spending much more time upstairs trying to watch movies on our 42" LG LCD with their crappy built in speakers that would distort and provide no clarity for watching movies. Dialog was especially difficult to enjoy. Lastnight we were going to watch another movie upstairs while I suffer through the poor audio and decided to get some speakers. I really didn't want a complete surround sound setup so I was even looking at computer 2.1 speaker systems that would take the TV's optical output.
Here's what I ended up with:
Sony HTCT100 - Sony - BRAVIA 3.1-Ch. Home Theater Soundbar Speaker System with Subwoofer
Features include:
Bass reflex 1-1/2" x 2-3/4" soundbar with LPCM playback support for up to 8 channels of uncompressed audio
100W bass reflex 6-3/10" subwoofer for rich low frequency performance
Built-in surround sound decoders include Dolby Digital, DTS and Pro Logic
Total output: 250 watts (soundbar: 50W x 3; subwoofer: 100W)
3 movie modes (cinema, sports, game), 2 music modes (music, personal audio) and 1 A.F.D. mode (standard) allow you to customize your audio playback
S-Force Surround design with S-Master and DSP technologies creates realistic surround sound from the soundbar
Magnetically shielded soundbar and subwoofer to prevent picture distortion when placed on or near a TV or monitor
HDMI Active Intelligence allows you to switch easily between components; accepts 1080/60p and 24p video
Digital Media Port (DMP) uses adapters (required; not included) for easy connection to a computer, a Bluetooth receiver or audio docking stations compatible with Network Walkman and Apple® iPod® models
Portable audio enhancer provides front audio A/V connections, allowing for quick and simple connection of portable music devices while digital signal processing technology expands the source quality
Digital Cinema Auto Calibration utilizes a microphone and digital signal processing technology to ensure improved speaker placement for an enjoyable audio experience
BRAVIA Theater Sync technology allows you to control your entire home theater system with press of a button
Inputs: 1 analog audio, 3 HDMI, 3 optical audio, 1 coaxial digital audio
Outputs: 1 HDMI
A feature I didn't see, "Learning Remote". How handy that would have been. Now I have to keep the TV remote around just to turn on the TV while controlling all audio functions with the HTCT100 remote, while using the SAT remote for changing channels, while using the PS3 remote to handle BD functions. UGH.
Sound quality is pretty decent, much better than I had thought and the input selection built into the sub allows for further expansion of inputs from my setup upstairs, although I don't foresee the need of additional components up stairs. I'm pretty happy with the purchases and at $270 I feel like I got a pretty good bang for my buck.
