Which would you rather have in GT5?

I think the novelty of seeing crashes/damage (as you do try to avoid them) will wear thin quite soon but having a race with your friend and seeing them laying down some rubber side-ways as you are chasing them would never fail to excite me.:)

stupid thread, why would we ever have to make this choice???

what would you rather have, a pizza or a disposable camera?

i dont see skidmarks as that big of an issue, in real life race cars often dont leave that many on track.

i went to silverstone a couple of years ago for bttc and after 6 hours of various support races and such the track was only marked by bits of rubber gathering on the edges of the track, asides from that it looked as clean as it did in the morning.

Its not a stupid thread - I'm interested to see which people would rather have, given the choice especially since on the video's to date there are no skid-marks which are a lot easier to incorporate into a game than damage will ever be.

Why go through all the heart ache of incorporating damage when simple skid-marks should of been in GT from the start.

You can't have the Top Gear test track and not lay down rubber like Jezza does - come on!!!

Trust me after you've driven a car into the barriers at 100 mph for the hundredth time it won't excite you but watching your self back on a replay on the Top Gear test track pulling burn outs in your Veyron or 4 wheel donuts in your highly tuned Evo making so much smoke that you can't see the car and then blasting out of it 'Top Gear test style' will never fail to make you smile.

It's a no brainier for me.

neither would be my main concern, but choosing between damage and skidmarks has to be damage. I don't find skid marks particularly important.

Uhuh...persistent markings that remain on the track throughout an entire race season at least, and affect grip levels accordingly? Sounds real simple.

I chose Damage.

Damage and skid marks aren't really comparable features at all.

Creating a proper damage model, I would imagine is A LOT of work. Leaving skid marks on a track is such a tiny and easy to implement feature it boggles my mind why it isn't in GT.

Better off with Skid Marks, because when you damage your car who knows if youre going to have to pay for the damage of your vehicle which you may not have enough money or credits to do so leaving you out of the next event.

While I can't say for certain how damage will be implemented in GT 5, in other racing games you either don't have to pay for repairs or the repair cost is taken from your winnings. There's no chance of not having enough money to pay for repairs.

Im sure if it could be done to the level required for a GT game so easily it would be in by now, i'm hoping with the processing power available high quality and well worked physically skid marks should be in the game.

I'd rather realistic and highly detailed skidmarks than shoddy ones thrown in whenever the accell is touched

Whenever I find myself thinking about the importance of one feature vs another, first thing I ask myself is: How does it impact the gameplay?

Skidmarks on this case....not so much...

having no skidmarks would be like playing Call Of Duty where your bullets don't leave marks on the wall or when you threw a hand grenade you hear the explosion but you don't actually see one - it would be like WTF?

SO IMPORTANT THIS NEXT STATEMENT:

Anyways skidmarks and damage can't exist without each other can they?

99% of the time where ever there is a crash (damage) there are skidmarks.

Just ask any Police Road Traffic Accident investigator.

PD can't show a video in the morning with a race car locking its front wheels to avoid having a collision and sustaining damage without it leaving two nice big thick skidmarks!!!

That is like asking if I would rather have Britney Spears or Jessica Alba. The answer is obvious.

You wish - Jessica has too "hollywood-tint" carnation for me (well, I never seen her in person, so it's purely based on the pictures), so while Britney's look isn't exactly my cup of tea, I'd have to choose the "girl-next-door" variant she resembles more. Why did you have to pick so overrated gals for the comparison? ;)

And (if I'm understanding you correct) it's just like that with damage vs. skidmarks -while damage seems like a crucial feature for many, I completely agree that having the ability to lay down some rubber is really neat (and quite important) - but it has to stay for the whole race (otherwise it's not so important, much more gimmicky). I'd like to see damage, but I think I'd find skidmarks to be more fun in the long run, especially for the 2 player battle.

good point, I picked skid marks

Depends on the damage, if we are including mechanical malfunction and wear and tear (due to abuse) then yes I prefer that.

I agree that this is an odd poll with odd selections to choose.

Do I want some thing that is on the track, behind me, that I'll rarely see unless I'm in 3rd person view doing donuts for no reason except to do them?

or......

Do I want damage, something that you are supposed to avoid and is the exact opposite of the main point of the race itself?

Someone who doesn't care about damage doesn't sound like someone I want to race against online. :P

Tyremarks are typically only a visual thing in a game but in real life, particularly in F1 because of the type of rubber, the grip increases on the racing line as the rubber is laid down onto the tarmac. Also mentioned by someone was the little bits of rubber that are spread out on the track off the racing line which can cause you to lose grip if you wander too far off the racing line. Both these issues combine to make real life overtaking much more difficult so it's questionable whether that should be included in a game unless it really is a full on sim.
