Earlier this morning, I saw this link RACECAR originally posted regarding Speed Channel. I'll post it here in my reply for you all to visit in case you haven't seen it yourself:

http://m.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Journal/Issues/2013/08/05/Media/Speed.aspx?

I can fully understand the money standpoint. The impression I usually get is this:

money > passion

Even with Speed Channel's flaws and least desireable content, it was still home for us motorsports fans. You're going to have things and people in your life that you love for certain reasons, hate for others. It eventually leads to a concept called... love. Television, however, is a business. I'd say Speed Channel did a pretty damn good job of lasting as long as it has even if a network could have profited more with a more general sports channel. There was love and heart for covering racing and featuring automotive programming. I think motorsports is its own diverse subcategory, as you have to account for both to automobile programming and racing. Both automobile-related content and motorsports content provide the full appeal of what Speedvision and Speed Channel provided. So even if you think Speed could have done, at least no other channel could emulate what Speedvision and Speed Channel have brought.

I think what is even worse about Speed Channel's departure is mostly the sports market in Charlotte. Unless you're a basketball fan, there's not much else realistically in the Charlotte sports market. I always know North Carolina (let alone Charlotte) as a basketball state, especially college. There is of course the Carolina Panthers and Minor League Baseball's Charlotte Knights (Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox). But I always think of racing in regards to Charlotte- especially NASCAR. So Speed becoming FOX Sports 1 doesn't do Charlotte much justice. And I read that SPEED Center's Adam Alexander will call some college sports matches from the link our RACECAR posted earlier today. It is still sad to see what will be gone once Speed Channel becomes FOX Sports 1.

Maybe we should have expected something foul on the horizon when Speed (of all channels) decided to show an English Premier League match on Speed Channel along with various other FOX network channels. Enjoy FOX Sports 1... while also remembering your favorite Speedvision/Speed memories. Here are some of my biggest Speed memories:

* seeing (then) Speedvision World Challenge and Speed World Challenge before the move to (then) Versus (now NBC Sports Network)
* seeing the (then) JGTC for the first time on television back in 2003 based on the 2002 season
* watching a mere GT Porsche win the 2003 24 Hours of Daytona in the debut of the Daytona Prototypes in 2003
* seeing series and shows like "Pinks" and Pinks - All Out."
* seeing Tom Kristensen pass Jacky Ickx for most outright Le Mans wins (I almost wanted to cry happy tears) in 2005
* (even though I didn't see it live) the epic farce that was the 2005 F1 United States Grand Prix
* the epic GT2 finish of the 2007 12 Hours of Sebring
* watching the first ever F1 night race with the Singapore Grand Prix
* seeing the unreal finale of the 2008 Brazilian Grand Prix- Maasa wins race; Hamilton wins championship
* watching NASCAR Trucks race Eldora
* "Motorsport Mundial" and "Mobil 1: The Grid." 'Nuff said.

Those are among many Speedvision and Speed Channel memories of mine.

Ah yes. I loved the Shield. I hated to see it end, but all shows must finish at some point (though that appears to be something they haven't realized with the Simpsons). Now I can't make it through without my Justified to watch. I imagine it has several seasons left in it. And while I believe Sunny is on it's last leg, I still occasionally enjoy it. Hopefully The League sticks around for a little while longer as well.

Point being, I really hope Fox doesn't try to do something stupid with FX and not allow me to see my shows. With not getting NBC Sports Network on our current Dish package, I'm already going to be losing out on quite a few NASCAR races. And I fear the same thing will be happening with Fox Sports 1.

What Dish plan do you have? I get NBC Sports Network with mine.

Even Though I'm not a sure if I'm getting FS1 it seems all the Auto racing is on FS2. Continental Road America race at 3PM and Grand-Am will be on FS2 at 8PM.

I'm not sure off the top of my head. I know it's not the top tier, but maybe the second one? I'd have to ask my parents.

Edit: Looking at Dish's website, it looks like we have the "America's Top 200" package. So yep, the second from the top plan. It still shows SPEED, for now...

As I originally reported Sunday, on August 17 when Fox Sports 1 launches in America, Speed will continue to broadcast in Canada. However, advance listings now show that Speed will broadcast motorsports programming from Fox Sports 1 and Fox Sports 2 in Canada, instead of the endless repeats that will air on a watered-down version of the channel for American providers who haven’t signed on to carry Fox Sports 1 yet. Usually the CRTC doesn’t allow American-owned services to broadcast a specific channel for Canadians; however, it seems that’s what Speed will do beginning on August 17.

Speed Canada’s updated advance listings for the launch weekend of Fox Sports 1 include these live broadcasts. US broadcaster is in brackets.

Saturday 8/17
8:00am – NASCAR Live: Michigan (FS1)
8:30am – Sprint Cup Practice: Michigan (FS1)
9:30am – Truck Series Qualifying: Michigan (FS1)
11:00am – Sprint Cup Practice: Michigan (FS1)
12:00pm – Truck Series Setup: Michigan (FS1)
12:30pm – Truck Series Racing: Michigan (FS1)
3:00pm – Continental Tire Series: Road America – debut (FS2)
5:00pm – Motorcycle Racing: Miller Motorsports Park (FS2)
9:00pm – MotoGP Qualifying: Indianapolis (presumably FS2)

Sunday 8/18
10:00am – NASCAR Raceday: Michigan (FS1)
11:00am – Moto3 Racing: Indianapolis (FS1)
12:00pm – Moto2 Racing: Indianapolis (FS1)
1:30pm – MotoGP Trackside: Indianapolis (FS1)
2:00pm – MotoGP Racing: Indianapolis (FS1)
7:00pm – NASCAR Victory Lane: Michigan (FS1)

I'm okay with this :eek::bowdown:

Well Earth, I think your question has been answered so the title more or less should be changed.

American TV is made up of basically 5 different companies-
NBC Universal (USA, SyFy, etc.)
Viacom (CBS, Spike, MTV, etc.)
News Corp (AKA The FOX/Republican Thrill-show)
Walt Disney
And the original king of cable, Turner (Even though Ted Turner himself is about as involved with it as the corpse of Walt Disney is with his company)
You could probably count on one hand the other TV channels that aren't owned by one of these 5.

I do watch traditional sports. You'll see me discuss college football and try to discuss college basketball. I talk about most of my Houston pro sports teams. My only problem is that the television voice of motor racing will be gone... just about forever. My first love is and always will be motorsport regardless.

Apparently, I think Speed will live on... as far as Speed Channel's website. This, according to a Facebook Fan Page update from Speed Channel's Facebook fan page. There will still be speed.com to cover motorsports news. Just that its channel will no longer be on the airwaves. Even if you don't care less about Speed's non-racing coverage, you have to wonder what shows like "My Classic Car," "Truck U," "Two Guys Garage," and stuff like that will go. Heck, I remember before eventually getting (then) Speedvision, "My Classic Car" and "Trucks!" were on (then) TNN before eventually finding its way onto Speed. My favorite show from Speedvision or Speed Channel was "Legends of Motorsport." I also enjoyed "On the Edge" because you never know what kind of racing it will feature, but it will mostly be entertaining. That's how I eventually got to enjoy demolition derby among other kinds of motorsport.

FOX Sports 1 takes over at about 5:00 AM EDT or CDT on Saturday August 17. Enjoy all the Speed Channel you can before FS1 completely takes over.

I wish I could take a picture of this but you guys might want to go to SPEED Channel right now. Does it say Fox Sports 1 for anyone else? It also says Fox Sports 2 for Fuel. I'm on DirecTV by the way.

EDIT: This is the Comcast Screen

Today is the final full day of Speed Channel before becoming FOX Sports 1 sometime around 5:00 AM EDT early Saturday morning. Gather your memories and enjoy Speed for one more day. Same likely goes for you FUEL watchers.

From the last-ever "SPEED Center" to the last ever "Wind Tunnel With Dave Despain"... I just heard "last-ever Trackside" just now. Talk about going in flames... FOX Sports 1 is going to be a real killer to Speedvision/Speed Channel.

I don't think I get FUEL. Speed Channel is still listed "SPEED" in my Dish lineup as of now.

I could see that, hey it's okay we learn something new everyday, you seemed to have a disappointing bit of knowledge though. I take it you don't like the Frozen Disney head owning ESPN?

Was just surprised to learn that. When I think Disney, ESPN isn't the first thing that comes to mind.

You should see the movie studios they own. Disney puts out some very family unfriendly stuff. They are massive.

Yeah, I still look at "Pirates Of The Caribbean" (a Movie I like by the way) and still think "How can this be a Disney Movie?". Its still unreal to me that they own Marvel.
