Standards given some love by v1.06?

You know what just occurred to me? PD might have screwed up with some of the Standards and only included lower LOD models for certain cars, or bugged up the loading so they didn't load the higher detail ones. You know, the crappier ones that the game loads when the car gets farther away to save on resources? That would explain why some of the cars looked worse than they did in GT4, and that would explain why this (relatively) small update cleaned them up.

This is my thinking, too. It definitely looks that way, and would explain the easy fix as well as the similarity to the GT4 shot.

In Photo Travel locations in GT4 wheels were in full 3D detail.
In the Photo Mode, very simplified.

EDIT:
I've been able to find this:

By the way, GT5 really needs a straight-to-usb upload feature like GT4...

What patch 1.06 seems to have done is improve the reflections and specular effects on all cars. I did a demo of my Alfa Romeo 8C to quickly see if the sound (overall) had been improved as reported, but it was the new sheen that caught my attention.

Those Caterhams also exhibit he new shading. Very nice.
EDIT: I notice the wheels are still the wrong colour on the Alto.

I've noticed that too, when I did the SE7 in FR with mi Camaro '97 the frony looked horible and it had horrible windows, now it looks a lot better

I think you are all crazy............... I haven't noticed any difference lol.

Look closer... some cars really do look better... I noticed some smoothed wheelarches (Dodge Charger for example...) and the windows borders, etc.

Nobody else has noticed the improvements to the shadows? When the game launched this was the most obvious graphical flaw to me and with this patch it's like 10X better.

That improvement was made in the previous update, not this one. And yeah it sort of blurs the edges of the shadows and moves them, improves the look on the move but watch the Eiger Nordwand in replay and the shadows of the spectators...looks pretty bad.

That said, personally it's more important to me how things look whilst i'm driving, and even then I am focusing more on winning the race than aesthetics. I've never had a big problem with the graphics.

I'm not one to buy into snake oil, but i'm more than sure pd took a look at standards. I bought me a red w/black stripes chevelle off the ocd on patch day.

If you remember: pre-patch, it only came in blue. All you nay sayers-0, me-1.

I think we can all agree they done something, cos too many of us are noticing it. I thought they done something yesterday but I didn't say anything, and then this thread got started!

There's definitely a difference in the quality of the decals on some of the race cars - The Abt TT-R being a case in point. Some are still horrendous though (such as the S2000 LM Race Car). But there is a noticeable difference on many. Some of my standards now have a cleaner window line - the FTO is one that springs to mind.

I had one that was gray/silver. Is there a Forest Green one?

I have one! RogsR34UK sent me one after I made a standard paint complaint thread(the chevelle is unpaintable). I needed it as my irl car is a 71' Chevelle Impala in... you guessed it... Forest Green Mettalic. He said he got it from the birthday Glitch. So apparently all the standard cars still have all their paints coded in the game, there just not available. You'll just have to birthday glitch till you get it...

Well, but now with the color changing cars appearing on the UCD, you can get it that way too 👍

It's nice to hear they improved some standard crap.. ehm cars to a decent level, but I'm still waiting for the "Race Cars and Prototypes DLC" all the race cars converted to Premium.. come on PD come on come on come on  just do it!

More than "improved" it's more like "fixed back to GT4-level standards of quality", speaking of textures (of course reflections, shadows and game resolution are better, but that does not have much to do with Standard cars). Just wanted to stress this as I believe some people are starting to think that PD are in the process of "upgrading" Standard cars.

To be fair, they are upgrading the GT4 cars to look as good in higher resolution in GT5 as they did in the previous game, though they look the same.

My point is that texture resolution (in PS2-gen games, car details instead of using modeled 3D meshes used transparent textures) on Standard cars is not getting better than it was in GT4. You can tell that by looking at Photo Mode images of the same cars from GT4.

If they are "upgrading" them in GT5, that is because they first downgraded them, although probably unintentionally.

I've been trying to buy out the OCD and both Zs seemed to have fairly aliased wheelarches. I haven't got a good look at the back of the Lightning but I remember that black strip used to be a mess.

Yes, you're right :)

GT4 cars? You're right but maybe when Shift 2 will be out we will start see some Standard to Premium upgrades, this is what I hope at least..

If shift 2 is anything like the first then GT5 has nothing to worry about imo.
It will be much better and not arcade, SMS clearly said it will be simulator. I hope Shift 2 will push PD to convert some standard cars. Let's this sim racing war begin

The problem is they said shift 1 wouldn't be arcade iirc and it was, but I will still give it a go when it comes out and see what it's like. Sorry people for going off topic.

There was probably a tweak to the rendering engine to help it show the cars in the quality they should be rather then any specific car upgrade.

And if GT5 was anything like GT4, we wouldn't have anything to worry about, either... :sly:

My bet is that SMS/EA will manage to avoid the complete screwing up of the game far better than PD did. All SMS needed to do, to be honest, is get better physics than Shift 1, and it would ALREADY be a better game than GT5.

None of before/after comparisons are taken the same way

replay mode adds a motion blur, and the photo mode definitely touches up the cars looks a bit.

Show me a picture of them during gameplay, before and after, and I'll believe you. In the meantime I'm going to test this for myself, but honestly, I think people are getting carried away...

Another thing that leads me to believe some standards were upgraded, is that I get the 'Installing...' notice when viewing some of my previously bought cars.
