Steam sale thread: Summer 2017 Edition

^Arma just announced a new map too at E3, 100km2 or something that size

Also, I posted the above in the 'Premium Gaming Thread', but had no takers. All of the above are available, along with two copies of 'PAYDAY 2:A Merry Payday Christmas Soundtrack' and a copy of 'Contraption Maker'.

I wouldn't mind Limbo ? :D (steam ID : Ibonibo)

Does anyone know if it's possible to send gifts to yourself on Steam? I want to purchase the ETS2 Northern- and Eastern DLC. Steam comes up with a warning, about the Eastern DLC as I already own it and I feel it's simply a shame for it to just vanish when someone could use it. Therefore I wish to give it away but I don't know if it's possible in a combination with gifting yourself, or at all for that matter.

I think you actually can buy it as gift, and gift one away and redeem the other. Only Anthologies, or packs, or what's it called can't be split up. Only valve packs can I think....

Also cracked today

bought Assetto DLC, Gunpoint (which is really brilliant) and Skullgirls which I ragequite after 2 miinutes

Just bought Arma 3 with DLC for Helicopters, Karts, and Marksman package... Only $29.99. Basic Arma 3 is only $24.99.

Very happy to have seen this sale today and looking forward to many hours of Arma.

PM me if any of you play and want to connect. :D

If you don't know Arma, or haven't seen Arma 3 specifically...
Try and resist if you can. :mischievous:

Warning, Mature game. Violence, military simulation.

I would definitely want to play. I have been wanting to play some Arma, but have not ventured out into the multiplayer side yet.

Friend request sent and PM sent about Limbo.

Hi guys, I'm a newbie to PC gaming and the whole Steam thing. Just to get an idea how often does big sales like this occur? I'm looking at most games it's 50%, some even up to 80% off during the flash sales. It's absolutely crazy and you never see this kind of prices for console games even in bargain bins. Thing is, I'm saving up now for a gaming computer (probably will buy it in the later half of this year). So is it worthwhile buying these cheap games now or should I hold off a few months? Maximum I'm gonna wait is probably Nov/Dec (meaning I don't wanna wait for next year's summer sale). Are there any more big sales coming up from now until Nov or is this it?

Thanks for any answers 👍

Steam generally has midweek madness on Wednesday which generally involves one or two games going on sale, a weekend sale on the weekend which usually has a few more games (especially if it's a publisher weekend), and generally about 100 incredibly cheap games on sale during the week which can be interesting if you just want to pick up a cheap indie game. In terms of major sales, I believe there's also going to be a Halloween sale for horror games, and there's always the Black Friday and Xmas sales to look out for.

I have picked up quite a few games through Humble Bundles also. I believe all of the games I have picked up have Steam keys and is an easy process to add them to Steam.

Depends on how powerful your computer's gonna be. If you're looking at indie games then you don't need to worry about spending a lot. If you want to play games like GTA V though you might need to spend a bit more, but even GTA V is pretty optimized (I wouldn't buy it from Steam at the moment since it's a pretty bad deal). It comes down to you being willing to research a bit on the games you want to play since some games on Steam are better than others when it comes to performance, especially Early Access titles. I would make use of the Wishlist too so when you come across a game you want to buy, you can just add it to your Wishlist and it'll tell you when it's on sale or it's got an update.

Also for building your PC I would use http://pcpartpicker.com/ so you can pick out your parts and organize it. You can even look at other people's builds too.

It is crazy, but you have to restrain yourself! Don't end up like almost all other PC gamers with backlists far longer than you'll ever play, it's just not worth it. I've got 697 games on Steam, 160 of them are in my 'hidden' category because I never want to play them again, 18% of them haven't been played (which is an exceptionally low figure - the average amongst other people I've had this discussion with is about 30%) and only 40 of them are actually installed on my PC right now. Try to think with your wallet rather than your head. It's almost guaranteed you'll go crazy buying tons of stuff regardless of what anyone tells you and that's fine (as long as it doesn't financially ruin you, of course), everyone does it, but the sooner you move out of that phase, the better - trust me, in three to five years you'll probably be on the same page as me. Just be cautious and try to keep track of what you're spending, don't buy things just because they're cheap and remember that stuff only gets cheaper over time.

As for building your PC, try to be patient and wait for Intel's Skylake processors and Nvidia GTX 960 Ti - that is unless you're either desperate or looking at an AMD build (which should only ever be for budgetary reasons* since Intel and Nvidia parts tend to outperform AMD in like-for-like tests). The current Intel processors are fine and have a lot of life in them, but Skylake is going to add a few nice features - lower power draw, better internal graphics processors and more PCI lanes - the relevance of which is all quite conditional but better to have than not. As for the GTX 960 Ti, the current 960 is too weak to max games at 1080p and 60fps, the 970 is overkill for the same resolution and frame rate. If you're looking at a 1080p, 60Hz monitor (Hz = highest frame rate it can display, by the way) then the 960 is a waste of money because it's not good enough, the 970 is a waste of money because there's all that performance and VRAM you won't use. The 960 Ti which is most likely coming (because of the huge gulf between the two) will solve that problem and is the best choice for 1080p 60Hz monitors. For what it's worth, I've literally just built my second gaming PC which uses a Haswell i5 and GTX 960, I expect to never replace the former (unless I decide to build an even smaller form factor PC after Intel introduce a new socket, which is precisely why I've built a second PC instead of just made an upgrade my current one) but I'll probably replace the latter in a year.

For specific part recommendations, logicalincrements.com is a great place to start.

*This is mainly my opinion, roughly as many people would agree with me as would laugh me off of the Internet. I've had bad experiences with AMD in the past, so I avoid them. Speaking of bad experiences, avoid Seagate hard drives like the plague!

So far:

The vanishing of Ethan Carter
Gone home
Euro Truck simulator 2
Broken sword 5
Flight simulator steam edition

Payed less than 30 bucks for all of them :)
The only thing i need now is the time to actually play all of it haha.

@LeGeNd-1 get the games you want now, as you will have to pay more for them later. Put them on your wishlist and check them in the next days (sales end 21st), and if they go down towards 80% it won't get any better than that.

30%? Please. Try more like 71%.

Source for above percentage.

That is correct. I have not played 139 of the 195 games I own. It makes me sad every time I realize I have all these games to play and never get around to playing them. Stupid Steam Sales and Humble Bundles getting me to spend money on games that look interesting and are cheap to buy!

Hence why I only buy one £10 Steam voucher per big sale and that is me (although this year for Steam I limited myself to just £2 and got GRID + Ford Racing 3). I think it's bad that I have far less games than you (50 to 200) yet I've played for 444 hours to your 200.

Hey now, there's no judgement in Steam libraries! As long as you're not living in a cardboard box, @Brett, no harm done, some people just like buying stuff. ~200 hours in 3 years though? I'm averaging about 1,000 hours a year! That's just called being a "good" student.

And yeah, I count just four unplayed actual games on @JASON_ROCKS1998's account, that's crazy. What's crazier is that two of them are Vice City and San Andreas but I expect you've already played them on a console, right? My unplayed games count includes Kung Fury (a film that's not even kept in my library, that I have watched), betas for games I have played, a load of DLC, a mod that I never downloaded and games I have played but were too old to count the time I played back when I played them, like Rainbow Six: Vegas. According to the categories I've set up for unplayed games I actually have 109 games yet to play (and that's including the separate episodes from older Telltale games), rather than the 132.43 SteamDB is telling me, so I have about 16% unplayed.

Anyway, back to the sale, here's what I can see today:

- Arkham Asylum and City are great, Origins is a lot less good but still ok. Very cheap, probably won't get cheaper before next year's sale. Shame about the Origins season pass.
- Grid Autosport is alright but it's still kind of expensive for what it is in my opinion, they've not been highlighted but Grid 2 and Grid are also reduced; some people say Grid is the best of the three (I'd probably agree) and that's 80% off right now.
- Both seasons of The Walking Dead are the same price, I've only played the first chapter of the first one, it was quite good. The DLC for Season 1 is also reduced.
- Spec Ops: The Line is pretty cool, I'd recommend that.
- FTL! Everyone must have FTL, it's so great and recently (probably like a year ago...) had a big, free expansion.

Wait, why would you call VC and SA as unplayed for my account? Or does "played" a game mean putting over 30 hours into it? Also, GTR2 is bugged as I've probably put 60+ hours into it but Steam launches a seperate .exe when launching it.

Eh, that amount of time on Steam is very small compared to what I have done with Origin or Blizzard games. I have spent twice that time in both BF3 and BF4.

I have spent a whole lot of time playing BF3/BF4 and Blizzard games in that time frame. I have over 400 hours of BF3 played and just under 400 hours of BF4. I have no idea what kind of play time I have put in on the Blizzard games and not sure I really want to know.

EDIT: I just remembered I put a decent amount of time into SWTOR also.

Grand Theft Auto III and Midnight Club II are mega cheap right now, £1.59 for MCII and £1.79 for GTA III.

Wait, why would you call VC and SA as unplayed for my account?

That's what SteamDB said... I think? I don't know, I've been ill lately and I'm still a bit fuzzy, maybe I misread it.

I have over 400 hours of BF3 played and just under 400 hours of BF4.

Oh yeah, fair point. I forget they exist sometimes, I think I put 400 hours into both of them combined - I seem to recall 260 hours for BF3 and 150 for BF4.

I checked and the only unplayed stuff is DLC. If I buy a game I will play it at least once.

Just checked and VC/SA appears twice. Once with the cover shown and price and again with no price or cover. Could be a glitch. If you sort by time played showing the most played first you'll see it immediately.

Only game I haven't played is RACE but that is because it came in a bundle with GTR, GTR2 and Race 07 (with DLC)

This is the most I have ever spent in a steam sale. I am cheap and don't usually get much.
Got.
Victory at Sea, Verdun, Sleeping Dogs Definitive edition.

They were all rather cheap as well.

I bought Cook, Serve, Delicious because it was only 90 eurocents.
Played it for 2 hours so far. Worth my 90 eurocents.

Also got Rock of ages because it was also 90 eurocents.
Also got Wolfenstein: The New Order which I'm pretty excited to play, Valkyria Chronicles which I've heard great things about and Metal Slug 3.

I'm doing pretty good this year. Most of what I've bought was really cheap and I've been meaning to get Wolfenstein for a while now.

Thanks for all the comments everyone 👍 Always trust the GTP crowd to provide extensive and insightful feedback on anything :D

For the computer I'm looking at a gaming laptop actually. I know it's not really ideal for gaming but my job requires me to move around quite a bit so having a full blown rig is not really suitable. I'm looking at the Lenovo Y50 (http://shopap.lenovo.com/au/en/lapt...=auow_pub_hh2_y50#tab-tech_specs#tab-features). My budget is around $2,000 so the super duper laptops from the likes of Alienware and Razer is out of the question. I've looked at Asus' offerings as well and they are a bit heavy for me (again, because of the moving around thing).

Also, does people think it's better to buy one with Windows 10 preinstalled, or buy an older Windows then upgrade it later? I'm thinking 10 straight away is more practical, but I'm worried some games would not run because of compatibility issues etc.

I'm mostly gonna be playing racing games. I have my eyes set on AC, PCARS, Dirt Rally, The Crew, NFS 2015, RRRE and Game Stock Car. Maybe Euro Truck Sim, SpinTires and Trackmania if I still have some dough left. Although I have been looking around Steam a lot the last few days and I'm starting to get interested in indie games as well (cue StarWars nooooooooooooo..........) :P PC gaming is just so interesting in its breadth. I should've abandoned console a lot earlier  I'm usually pretty good at not building up a massive backlog, but I fear that's going to change :scared:

So yeah, from those games I think PCARS will be the most taxing but I think the Y50 should suffice. Also I've read PCARS has issues with AMD GPU so I'm gonna be sticking with Nvidia. I'm OK with not playing every game on Ultra as long as I can get stable 50-60 FPS. I'm running rFactor now on my 6 years old laptop on all the lowest settings and I'm still having a ball :D

Once again thanks for all the help peeps :) Now I'll be back to stalking the Steam store...

So I just bought the ETS2 East + North Expansions pack and I sadly couldn't gift the Going East DLC onwards as I wanted to... It's a shame, but that's how it is. :boggled:

Verdict. They are all quite good. Would recommend them.

I think Sleeping Dogs is a bit of an unsung game. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

My purchases so far:

Witcher 2
IL2 Sturmovik
Napoleon Total War.

£6 spent.

Sleeping Dogs is underrated, I mean it crashed a lot for me but they may have fixed that in the new version, when it works though it is to Hong Kong action films what GTA is to western gangster films. I love Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan films and some of John Woo's crazy action films like Hard Boiled, you can definitely see their influence in Sleeping Dogs - the mission with the bus felt like it was taken straight from a Jackie Chan film.

I'm looking at Toybox Turbos again but I've pretty much run out of money, £2.99 would be my lunch for one day next week...
