Superstars V8 - PS3 Preview
In the first hand I'd like to thanks good people at the Milestone for giving me opportunity to make a preview of PS3 build of Superstars V8 game.
Just to make it very clear at the first lace, since it obviously have made greatest stir so far -
the game HAVE FORCE FEEDBACK for PS3, it supports G25 (not the clutch as I can see form the options) and the option screen shows DFT as well. So, I guess all Logitech wheels are supported.
However, at the build I have - and I don't know which build it is really but I can say it is clearly not final since it has some issues natural to preview builds - you can't actually change the level of the FF. Thus, the level is not strong as we're familiar at GT5
or Ferrari Challenge, but it is clear it is fairly done, but still not represented in expected manner. I hope we can expect the force feedback options in the final build.
Game consist for usual modes in such licensed title, with nice inclusion of "Superstars Licenses" mode which consist of series of test to fulfill (bronze, silver, gold) in order to win Trophies or possible unlock some extras. I still have to discover the actual content, since I still didn't bother to drive that mode because the ff is actually not yet fully implemented in that mode.
The multiplayer options discover
that in-game voice chat is existing, but I didn't manage to play with anyone online.
The p
physics model is somewhere between of Ferrari Challenge and Toca Race Driver games (not GRID), and with all driving-aids off you still have proper control of the car because of the slick-racing tires. Handling seems like it uses the cintral pivot-point but it also gives impression of 4-points-model. I have to take some time to see it since I have only driven two races and spent the time in looking around the modes.
There is substantial level of tuning-options in all race modes while I still have to discover their full potential compared to default setting.
There are around 12 tracks (I'll note them later) and around 20 cars (BMW being the majority, Audi, Jaguar, Chrysler and Chevrolet I think among the others, also will note them later). When you drive you take the actual name of that particular driver due to V8 license.
Graphics are 30fps, no cockpit mode - and due to overall looks I do not see that interior will come in the final build. However, it could be a nice surprise.
Sound is fine, machines and effects are pretty good and there is also some nice ambient sounds (helicopters, crowd, pavement effects) around in 5.1.
In every mode you can access the Telemetry, done somewhere in the manner of Data Logger in the Gran Turismo 3 game.
There are also
wet races, but I still have to try them. However, there is no variable weather from what I can see.
AI is fairly competitive (have tried them on the highest setting) and you really can enjoy some particularly interesting situations of AI battles between them.
During the SP races you can pause in any moment and enter some kind of
photo mode, but the usage of it is somehow limited when driving with the wheel. In the attached pictures you can see one picture from it, and you can notice the nice effect of the cars getting dirtier during the actual race. I haven't find an option to save such picture or transfer it anywhere, so it remains to be seen what will come out of it.
Winning the races gets you new items for your 3D garage, but I still have to find out details about that too.
In conclusion of this short preview, I can't really judge this game fairly yet. It is clearly somewhere between approachable simulation and demanding arcade racing-game, with pretty nice rooster of tracks which are not often seen in console racing games. It has nice basic multiplayer options, but it have to be seen how the MP will work in the final build. Same goes for physics model because I can't judge it properly as long as force feedback does not work in it's full potential.
From this point I can predict Superstars V8 will justify their budget price and that such decision was a great move from Milestone. If force feedback gets proper overhaul and if MP will be good, I can see SV8 to become a serious contender to Supercar Challenge due to their imminent clash in release window. It is not a high-budget game, but it packs some interesting contents for all of people who are waiting for NFS: Shift or Forza 3 or GT5.
Since I hope Milestone will grant me with the retails build in days to come, you can maybe expect actual review before game hits the shelves.
