It's blistering fast, but it's not really impressive in the sense of "production records" (which is the end goal) considering it had to literally become a race car to achieve the time. I highly doubt re-adding the interior, stripping all its extreme aero, and adding back more street-friendly tires will still make it capable of such a time.

Yeah. At this point, it's basically a time attack car. Lots of tire + lots of power + lots of aero is always going to make a quick lap time.

I must confess, I'm genuinely curious what a standard* "plaid" car is capable of.

*One not so far removed from a production-ready road car.

It's capable of turning fanboys into fanmen if you know what I mean.

I still wouldn't have thought that level of performance possible for this car. I'd have expected that the chassis and weight would let it down.

I, however, totally called it in the Taycan thread:
Throw more power at it, put it on sticky tyres etc. Doesn't have to be repeatable, reliable or available to satisfy the Tesla nerds, it just needs to set the time so they can claim the Porsche isn't as good as a Model S.
:D

You can make more or less anything beat more or less anything that way. It's why Mustangs and Camaros with 12-inch wide tyres front and back and rock-hard suspension keep beating lap times set by supercars at places like Laguna Seca.

Sophistication, light weight, or even driver appeal aren't strictly necessary as long as there's enough power and grip. Tesla beating Porsche around the 'Ring was just a matter of time. Of course, it's completely academic, as Porsche could play the same tricks tomorrow and probably undercut Tesla once again, so the only real end game is which manufacturer gets bored first.

Yup. I remember.

I don't totally see the point unless it's a setup that they're expecting to put into production. So I kinda doubt that Porsche will get pulled into the pissing contest (but hey, what do I know, I didn't think Tesla could pull this much off). Porsche seems more interested in testing production elements.

A lot of this testing was development for the new roadster. So not completely unnecessary.

Is there any situation in which you guys could see Tesla's stock value not rising (at least temporarily) after the truck reveal tonight?

Probably just the reveal itself. I'm not expecting it to be what everyone else is expecting it to be and I'm sure many will be upset.

Sorry for the awful resolution, I'm taking this off of print screens.

That is absolutely hideous. It is literally designed with a ruler, and looks like it was designed to look like something futuristic out of an incredibly low-budget scifi movie.

I would say it has n chance in hell against Rivian, but I know how die-hard some of tesla's fans are. They would eat up anything.
