Count me in.

I have a '93 525iSE, E34. The 24v engine with single VANOS.

Built when they were at their best and they were making them properly with four lamps at the front, a straight six in the middle and rear drive out the back.

Ideally, I'd like a '93 E34 535iSE, with leather, cruise and a slushbox.

Or very ideally a 1981 E28 M5, with the dog leg 'box.

For reference only, as mine is blue, this is the e34:

Mine has a silly wing on it too, and this is the '91, as it still has the chrome round the windows and full colour mirrors.

The still make them with a stright six and they still make them with rear wheel drive , the headlight you've got two lamps inside each headlight :D

:sly:

I know they still have the 'six and RWD, but they miss the aggression that the old ones have. Just part of the global market though, you have to dilute the brand to gain sales. Hence mercedes and BMW make hatchbacks now.

And I don't know about the US ones, but european spec ones have a single bulb in each lamp. H7 or H9 or something. The outer are dip with a section of reflector missing to achieve the dip while the inner ones are high beam with a thick lens and full reflector.

The sidelights are included in the outer dipped beam ones though, but at 5W it's not worth counting.

Sorry to doublepost....

I'm chopping in the 525, and rather than the typical 'what car should I buy' thread, I'm asking not for suggestions, but if anyone has any experience, good or bad, with either an E34 shape 1989-1992 M5 with the 3.6 315bhp engine, or a 96-99 E39 shape 528i.

Both are about my price range, and I've already excluded the E class for being ugly and having an annoying indicator stalk, and the A6, as it was too much like the 100 back then.

I'm undecided over the M5, as I'm not sure if I want to pay BMW to service it. My 525 is home serviced, as it's not worth paying for it. But for an M5, it will (probably) eventually appreciate in value, and so should be dealer serviced. Plus it'll eat tyres and drink like a fish.

The 528 is the sensible option, but I've heard the E39 has numerous electrical 'issues'.

Anyone have any experience with these, or know someone who has?

It's final. On Thursday I took the day off school to take my mother down to the nearest BMW dealer to show her the new 3 & 5-series. Why? She needed a new prestige/luxury car for the weekends but it had to come with a fair amout of room. She liked the 3-series but then when looking at the seating; it was not going to satisfy her needs. I then persuaded her to examine a BMW 5-series and sure enough, she enjoyed the interior.
The plus being here was that she was after a Diesel so I managed to ask the dealerman to take her for a test-drive in the new 530d. Nevertheless, I had to come along and I can definately say it was incredible and she loved the Navigation system and the Active Steering.

We got home and she decided that it's the car she wanted and I couldn't of agreed more. I'm considering a Sapphire Black paint but she leans towards the brighter colours. I'm more into the black leather but she likes the beige so it'll be interesting to see what it turns out to be.

Can't wait. :)

For those who don't know what the 530d looks like, here is an example:

Sure, it may not be too special but it's the first BMW our family is getting. :)

I'm a fan of BMWs, but hardly have any knowledge and I'm not really intersted in learning, so I'll opt out of joining the club. I do have one bit of info to share with whoever needs it, especially Master Yoda (see his post near the beginning):

Not only is it the BMW motorcycles that are called Beemers, but he didn't even spell Beemer right!? BMW cars are called Bimmers. I've told my friends this sooo many times it gets ridiculous.

How can you call yourself a BMW 'fan' if you possess no intention to further your understanding about the automotive manufacturer?

You know what, you're right. How can I appreciate BMW, their cars, and what they've done if I don't know what to appreciate? I suppose it would be cool to know what I'm talking about when someone asks me a question about Bimmers (not Beemers, motorcyvles aren't my thing), just as I enjoy knowledge about Porsche and Honda.

Therefore, I'll retract my previous statement and gladly join the club, in the pursuit of knowledge and all that stuff.

being a fan doesnt mean having to know everything about something. just because i eat everyday doesnt make me a food critic.
same with tires, i drive everyday, but doesnt mean i know everything about tires.

i can appreciate something without needing to know everything about it. especially if other things (other foods, other tires, other cars) have brought me to my current state of mind.

Being a fan of something is different from appreciating it or just liking it. When you say "I'm a fan of XXYYZZ," it implies that you possess more than a simple appreciation for something.

Otherwise, everyone would be a fan of everything they've ever come into contact with. "Hey guys! I'm a fan of oxygen!"

There. A fan is more than just a person who shows respect or enjoys the subject. A fan is involved in the pursuit of an interest and subscribes to the methods of the subject. In other words, they enjoy learning more than they already know.

Even though hydrogen is most likely not the fuel of the future, you have to give them credit for creating a fairly realistic, usable, hydrogen-powered vehicle that doesn't rely on an electric fuel cell. It isn't easy to get a piston engine to burn that stuff.

Yeah, they diffinitely are coming up with stuff that'll help something in the future, if not cars.

Perhaps. I'm just not sold on the whole hydrogen idea until someone can find a good way to produce it without harming the environment or draining oil as much as we already are with petrol-powered cars.

In any case, BMW's hydrogen-burning piston-engine concepts are making the (possible) future of hydrogen cars look pretty good, in my opinion. At least we won't be stuck with electric fuel-cell cars that hum around like a golf cart. Mazda has created a hybrid petrol/hydrogen rotary engine, too.

so accoring to the dictionary im not a steelers fan coz i dont know anything about em? i havent known anything about em for about 10 years that ive supported them, but that doesnt mean im not a fan.

feel free to throw out that definition.

while i agree that a fan usually shows a measure of enthusiasm for thier chosen team/ item, that enthusiasm can also be from a process of elimination.

everybody in LA is a laker fan. well, fark the sheep, im rooting for the clippers!!

So you have no clue who the current coach is, who the good players are, who the quarterback is, what the stadium is called, or why they're called the Steelers? None of that information is hard to pick up.

It's not like we would expect you to know whether the Steelers won against the Packers in the 1984 season and at which stadium the game was played, just to be called a "fan." The same goes with BMW -- you don't have to know whether they won the 1973 24 Hours of Nurburgring, and with which car, just to be called a "fan." You may, however, be expected to know what "BMW" stands for, what the roundel represents, how the naming system works, what a few of the more commonly-referred-to chassis codes are, and give a rough summary of what BMW did before, during, and after the World Wars...

lets not debate this here :)

I wrote a small report(Research papper) for uni 2 years ago for an english course about Hydrogen cars, only 3 pages and I got an A for it :D , it gives you an over view of Hydrogen cars and the futuer , Hope you guys benfit from it :)

Tell me if its good enough to post in the Genral cars forum for other people to read :)

i know that information about pretty much all the pro bball and football teams. what their name is, what stadium they play in, who thier coach is, who thier key players are.

i dont know more about the steelers than i do the chargers. is that a fair way to put it.

and thats really because when you boil it down to its essence, im not a football fan. i watch it, but only because i have nothing more intresting to watch. and i only picked the steelers so id have an answer for when everybody asked me who was my team.

now, according to the definition, im not a fan. i dont have in depth knowledge of them in any way shape of form. i can only name three players. porter, polamalu and rothliesburger. oh, and ward.
but i can also name four san diego players too.

anyway. im not convinced i have to be all knowing to be a fan.

What does that have to do with this thread :guilty: , please discuss this eles where :)

Back on topic,

This weekend, I might be buying a first generation M5!

I say, 'might', as it's dependent on a test drive and an MOT pass. There's a few spots of corrosion, but mostly in good nick.

For anyone who is interested, it's a 1980 M535i, E12 chassis. Which as far as I can find is the first BMW to wear the M badge (except maybe the M1).

Basics are 1300kg, 3450cc 'big six' and claimed 218bhp. I'm guessing after 26 years, It'll be about 170-180 at the wheels.

But it has the lovely dog leg manual, and the running gear is pretty much straight off the 635CSi.

Just like this, but black.

-Edit- Does anyone know anything about them, that I should know. The only things I know to look for is fuel system leaks on perished pipes and rust round the fuel tank union.

it goes to the definition of what it means to be a fan. you are a self proffessed BMW fan. but
a) what does it mean to be a fan
b) is it necessary to have an all knowing factual database of whatever it is you are proposing to be a fan off?
c) especially in light of what the dictionary defines fan dom to be.
its all outlined in the posts above.

in simple english, is there a qualifying requirement in order to be classified as a fan? crap, theres two four syllable words in that sentence. its not so simple.
is there a requirement that has to be met before you can be a fan? still not so simple.
are there things you have to know before you can be a real fan?

if its too much for you to comprehend, then stick to simpler subjects like why you like BMWs, and those of us who can digest it, ponder it, and argue it will do so.

My dad has an '05 525d SE, and I just love it.

The car looks awesome (something which, at the launch of the new 5-series, I never thought I'd say), and the engine is just perfect. It doesn't sound like a diesel at all, and I think it almost sounds as good as my dad's old Jaguar S-Type 3.0. I'll try and get some pics of it, I know it's not a significant model in the range (not an M car, or maybe the 535d) but it's still a damn nice car
