Sirotkin was challenging Vandoorne. That would explain why Rossi was 2nd in points and winning races against Vandoorne.

It all makes sense.

Did you actually watch the racing, or are you just looking at the final standings? Rossi was pretty much powerless against Vandoorne when they were on-track together.

Yeah, nobody really stood up to Vandoorne over the season. Hence how he walked away with it.

It's not a team domination thing either, his Japanese teammate couldn't even touch him either.

Are you actually going to be unbiased towards Rossi for once or is that too much to ask for?
Rossi spent four years in GP2 and didn't win the title.

Do you know who did win the title in his fourth season? Pastor Maldonado and Jolyon Palmer. Davide Valsecchi and Fabio Leimer also won it within four years. They're probably the four least impressive GP2 champions, and they still out-classed Rossi.

I'm all for celebrating the achievements of promising young drivers, but Rossi is not one of them.

I didn't realize the span of 2013 to 2015 was 4 years.

 ok so it was 3 years, not 4. That said, he's spent over 5 years in junior series, where he was beat by the likes of Gutierrez (his teamate, who won the title with 2 rounds remaining) and JEV and never won a championship.

He's mediocre at best. He's only around because of the money. You only like him because he's 'Merican.

He's not going to amount to anything other than a back marker. Maybe he'll be a "late bloomer" and prove me wrong, but I doubt it.

On another note, anyone named Alexandre who insists on being called Alexandre and not Alex, is a chump

Where did I ever state that I liked him?
Well you like to white knight for him, so I assumed it was for a reason. I guess you're just a white night for all up and coming drivers with mediocre records?

Also, why do you frequently reply to people and not quote them?

I'm white knighting? Ok... There's also no rule that states one needs to be quoted at all times.

There was one good driver in all of GP2 last season and that was Stoffel Vandoorne. In fact, a vast majority of the drivers that have gone through GP2 are not that good. Hamilton, and Rosberg to an extent, have been the only exceptional standout champions from GP2 in it's 11 year history.

No, but it's a douche move to reply to someone and not notify them that you've done so. It's poor etiquette....you know, just how you think changing thread titles is poor forum etiquette...

Is this a fun fact, or....?

I'm not sure what this has to do with anything. Care to elaborate?

I was miscounting one of his Formula Renault 3.5 seasons. But even there, he struggled. And in GP3. He hasn't won any championships - much less major championships - since Formula BMW in 2008.

What do I need to elaborate on? The fact that GP2 is not the be-all-end-all of driver talent?
Right...but what does that have to do with the conversation?

How does you stating that GP2 has not produced a large number of top tier drivers reinforce your postion that Rossi deserves an unbiased judgement at this point in his career?

Hulkenburg?

It sounds silly to say, but didn't Pastor Maldonado practically walk away with 2010 championship?
It's true that there was something of a vacuum with so many drivers graduating to Formula One, but he still had to beat the likes of Sergio Pérez and Jules Bianchi.

And he did beat them ;)

I'm in no way a fan of Maldonado, I don't like his attitude towards others around him as well as spatial awareness.

You do realize it took him a frame of time that many drivers promoted to F1 don't get to spend...and this is in the feeder series where anyone else without his massive backing would have been kicked to the curve.

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I can't really think of a better spot other than starting a new thread. Anyway...

For anyone jonesing for some open wheel action, the Toyota Racing Series in New Zealand kicked off this past weekend with the opening round at Ruapuna Park. I'm still waiting for BurningWhee1s to upload the broadcast...not sure if the broadcast is delayed or not.

I think Markalov is the only returning driver this year. I thought Lance Stroll was on the driver's list when I checked s couple months back, but I have a feeling he's withdrawn from the series since getting the seat for the Daytona 24hr. Maybe he'll contest some of the later rounds. The only other name that stands out is Pedro Piquet, younger brother of Nelson Piquet Jr. He's won the last 2 seasons of Brazilian F3, so it will be interesting to see him compete against a more global lineup.

Stoked that there's some racing back :D

Raffaele Marciello has lost his place with Sauber as a development driver; it seems that Ferrari have dropped him from their development programme.

That would explain why he's joined Russian Time in GP2 along with Artem Markelov.
I'm not seeing the connection, since Ferrari don't directly support any GP2 teams. They placed Marciello at Trident because Trident have a reputation for ironing out a driver's racecraft - they performed a minor miracle with Johnny Cecotto Jr - but Marciello evidently didn't impress Ferrari enough.

Antonio Giovinazzi has joined Prema Powerteam for GP2, while Mitch Evans is having another crack at the title with Campos. With Sirotkin in the ART and Alex Lynn going to Racing Engineering, GP2 is shaping up nicely, so maybe there's hope for the future of Formula 1.

I thought Lynn was staying at DAMS? Either way he's my pick for the title.

No, he hasn't been confirmed there. Mercedes haven't announced any of their DTM drivers.

The popular belief at the moment is that Renault will battle through 2016 with Maldonado and Palmer while they rebuild the team before taking Magnussen and Esteban Ocon in 2017. But I can't find anything to substantiate it.

The Magnussen rumour gathers pace with Sky reporting that Maldonado's 2016 money hasn't been paid and, despite a specific "media invitation" to do so, Renault have refused to confirm their drivers.

Like I said, the story comes up enough that I am jaded enough that I will only believe it when it happens. They might not have confirmed Maldonado as a driver, but they haven't confirmed Palmer either. They haven't got any reason not to confirm Palmer unless they see right through Sky's ploy and want to continue to control the flow of information. Sky - or any other outlet - can wheedle them as much as they like, but Renault have already said that full details of their 2016 will be confirmed at their launch, which I believe is scheduled for 2016.
