A Dutch guy makes these nice posts about what happened on this day (today in history) but then years back, I'll throw some in but I'll only translate some things :P It's more for the photos.

Three days after the release of their latest album Street Survivors and after a concert in Greenville, South Carolina the members of Lynyrd Skynyrd fly from Greenville to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The flight is operated by a Convair VC-300 (N55VM), built in 1948 and it is the third built CV-300.

The Convair suffers fuel shortage and the crew has to change route to McComb-Pike County Airport in Mississippi. However the plane crashes in wooded area. 20 people survived the crash however Ronnie van Zant, Steve Gaines and his sister, their assistent road manager and both pilots died on impact.

The last flight of somewhat regular flight of the Aérospatiale-BAC Concorde. BA001 flew the day before as commercial flight to New York but the flight back, BA002, was no commercial flight but a special flight, VIP's were invited.

If you want to talk about haunting aircraft crashes, here's one for you. This plane:

A Dassault Falcon 50, was the Rwandan Presidential jet. It was shot down in 1994, triggering the infamous Rwandan Genocide and the deaths of 1,000,000 people.

I knew about the Tutsi - Hutu conflict but no idea this started it.

The model of plane is basically irrelevant, but the assassination of the Hutu president was what started the conflict in the first place. As always, genocide is messed up.

This is the absolute #1 coolest Blue Angels pic I have ever seen!!!! I have always wanted to see them at the waterfront there, some of the best pictures I've seen come from there, and I know they pass the bridge several times as they approach and depart the show line, but it never occurred to me to wonder what it looks like AT the bridge!!!!

Go, Rich Shelton!

Still not sure if I like the looks of the F-35. Next to the F-22, it looks a bit like a frog :indiff: I don't really like the sound of it either, it's like an F-16 but ten times louder...

A little bit different than usual the two above. First De Havilland Comet with AEW nose and Nimrod tail, second is an Hawker Siddeley Nimrod.

After seeing several random Ospreys fly around here, I must say that is a funky, but cool aircraft. Given how big the prop-rotors are, the thing isn't very loud. It does sound rather beefy though, like those blades are moving some serious air around.
