Is that Nightwing in the general anime thread? :dopey:
Those that don't know of anime or Madoka think this looks like a cute little girl's cartoon when we all know that's ridiculously far from the truth.
What's it about actually? Can someone spoil it for me as I don't really want to watch magical girl anime.
I mean Pacific Rim struggled to work here because the general public viewed it as a terrible live-action Transformers rip-off with Godzilla before it opened.
It's sad that a majority of the people don't actually know what they're really watching. :ouch:

And Pacific Rim isn't even anime (But feels much like a mecha anime).

No.

Pacific Rim struggled for a different reason.
To put it simply.
The robots are fat and fat isn't cool.

I know, I know; that doesn't sound right but hear me out.
Pacific rim robots (per previews) don't even look as fast as OG gundams. Forget NGE robots, I'm talking ground pounders to the max.

People don't want that, looking at a slow, massive robot punch a really big animal makes the average person ask what happened to Nukes. :P

Seriously, Del Torro dropped the ball when he thought the old mecha movie style would work simply because CGI is better.

He should have focused on art style.
Make the monsters super ugly and don't show them at all (cloverfield hype).
Make the robots NGE badarse, don't let them move unless its straight kungfu.

Finally, and most importantly, Pacific Rim came out in a summer where I was forced to go see Superman.
I genuinely enjoyed superman, no regrets.
But when it came time to see a movie, have a few drinks, eat sushi, and hang out with my little brother, Superman was the choice, not pacific rim.

btw, I love what you all are doing with cos-play pics and not double/triple posting.
Can't wait to see this thread hit the post limit if there is one. I mean, 48,556. Awesome! 10 years and kicking.

1. You don't want to be spoiled because you'll want to watch it. It's a deconstruction of the magical girl genre, and a show that is very well done (But not as much as the internet hypes it out to be (The greatest anime of all-time)-in my very unpopular opinion).

2. Yeah pretty much. I mean giant robots have been done before, even before Transformers. Japan has done them to death. I wonder how people would have reacted if that live-action Evangelion movie ever had come to fruition.

< never watched Magical Girl Anime.

Frankly,
Anime with girls is always a gamble to me.

More to say but not sure how to say it.

I thought Pacific Rim was awesome.
Same, but a shame that didn't lead to it doing hot at box offices. It lost to :censored:ing Growns Ups 2. Hell Pacific Rim left the movie theater I work at today (And it did so by playing in our largest auditorium).
(Granted Growns Ups 2 is now sharing an auditorium with Turbo, a sign it'll leave soon but still)

Also, Pacific Rim didn't do so hot at the Japanese box office surprisingly.

One of the comments near the bottom suggests apparently there was a lack of promotion and not too many were aware of the film's existence.
I live in Japan and work at a University here, it’s a University of Technology, almost all male and almost all interested in robots/electronics and sci-fi movies (Gundam, pla-model etc.) However not one of my students had even heard of Pacific Rim before I told them about it, after showing them the trailer (Japanese Version) they showed some interest, but seriously nobody had heard of it at all. I live in a fairly rural prefecture but we still have a large population (around 800,000) and I didn’t see even one advertisement, poster or other piece of PR outside of the movie theater itself. I went on the opening night to the main movie theater in the prefecture and there were 8 people in the showing. So yeah maybe they covered Tokyo with their tour but it seems like the rest of Japan had no clue. I personally love the film and I really think it IS a great tribute to classic Japanese monster movies but if nobody knows it exists you can’t expect a big opening weekend. So I think whoever was doing PR has some questions to answer.

(World War Z by contrast had regular TV spots posters everywhere and yeah admittedly Brad Pitt can’t of hurt, but the difference in PR was not even close. Again I can only speak for my prefecture here.)

I've been lsitening Nana's OST a lot lately. Well, not the OST per sé, Olivia Lufkin's Inspi by Reira album in particukar, which is sweet as all the hell. And everytime I play the album at home, my wife sez "the music is cool but it doesn't mean a thing to you because you haven't watched the show, but for me is hyper-crash </3"

So I'm almost, aaaalmost tempted to watch Nana because of this album. It's that good. But I'm affraid I won't stand Nana.

Understandable, but sir, you are missing out on some of the most coolest shows... in the world. /clarkson

Ugh never! She's so overrated. Lexus and Kayane look so much better. And maybe Bison girl.

I loved Pacific Rim, I thought it was an absolute blast. It, like Avatar, was made for 3D. I can't wait for the inevitable sequel.

HNNNNNNNNNNNNG.

I don't care how good and "authentic" looking the cosplay is when the women are unattractive. Blarg. That Naoto is the only one worth ruining.

Elfen Lied finished. Overall in the end it was just decent, good character development, but the storyline held it back from being good. Still it ended up being enjoyable (Even though it took halfway through episode 6 for it to become much more engaging).

And since people might want me to talk about "ZOMG THE VIOLENCE AND NUDITY!!!", which are two of the things that helped make this one of the most popular anime here for the last nine years, it didn't shock me too much. The problem is I've seen plenty of anime with that kind of stuff before, so it's much harder to surprise me.

Not to mention the show makes itself predictable with how its going to brutal much of the time as it gives you a very good idea who is next to be brutally killed.

I do admit that
the infamous dog scene did surprise me, even though I had heard about there being a brutal scene with a dog a few years beforehand. That poor dog, and those kids are just way too damn cruel.:(

This is next on my list to watch. Nice to hear your word on it.

As for Elfen lied, it was pretty gory if I remember correctly. I just remember my ex becoming a big fan of it for awhile.

Is that true? Or fan made. If it's true, I will watch for sure. An anime series with Red instead of Ash. A dream come true.

I don't watch anime. But someone could recomende me a good anime for me, to watch this summer?

It is true. As for recommendations; Attack on Titans, Madoka, Sword Art Online, Fate/Stay Zero, Macross, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Full Metal Panic, Samurai X, Elfen Lied, Persona 4, Lucky Star, Highschool of the Dead( has a second season been confirmed?).

OMG, I will watch that Pokemon anime for sure. Red is so badass.
Thanks for the recommendations nk4e.
I have already copy that anime list.

That list is alright except for Highschool of the Dead. Never recommend that garbage to someone.

Trufax, absolute garbage that values fanservice more than anything else.
(Then again even without fanservice it'd still be crap.)
