I guess Elfeld Lied is more gruesome than Terror, at extreme levels, and is too dissonant be actually qualified as something (it has Sci-fi, fan service and ... very disjointed sections of a centric story and body parts).

As for actual horror in an anime, that's a really good question, maybe Monster could be the most scary one I've seen (it really gets grim at times, with some sense of void that I'm yet to see in other animes).

However, what anime has become lefts a lot to desire, I honestly can't recall anything truly scary since monster, and I think that's due to anime's inherent characteristics nowadays (which is either a school setting with a theme, if not then is a shonen, if not then is a reboot of some sort).

Something which was somewhat scary was Lain, on it's final episodes, and some parts of it, there was a really heavy tone to it almost constant through the series, how Lain contemplated the destruction of herself and how dissonant and split she becomes towards the end.

Monster wouldn't be a bad choice for horror. I think it'd be hard to not call it such, but when I watch it, I'm always anxious to see how the finish will end.

Someone's favorite Horror is Trigun....

I think that is one of the most clever things you've said.

I wouldn't say Lain is horror really. It's beautiful, but little about it horrified me. Perhaps that's just my opinion. Perhaps I'm not easily horrified...

Maybe one can see the unusual psychological themes as a horrifying thing.

I would classify something as horror with that train of thought.

Why does this feel like massive spoilers for 4.0?

Also, why is Toji's little sister so cute? I want to stroke her like a car or something. How disgusting...

Roger, no pun intended?

Monster is labeled as a thriller.

Yeah, just like our win streaks on AE. It comes and goes

Fine. I'm trusting you on this, because you don't usually let me down with random suggestions. If it ends up sucking(at any point), I'll say mean things to you.
Considering this show has much of the same staff as Gurren Lagann (Which is why it had so much hype before it began airing), I'm doubting it'll end up sucking.

Well... Production IG has a great standing record, but SAO didn't, and because of it, we all have our doubts about deciding by the first episode now.

Cartoon Network haven't shown Cowboy Bebop in Europe in over a decade, and it's only just being released on DVD now. I'm going to wait until it halves in price after christmas and buy it then.

Also, is Madoka Magica worth watching? Everyone raves about it, but I honestly have no idea what it even is except for the fact it's made by SHAFT and I'm always put off SHAFT's stuff by the excessive use of creepy fanservice.

Hmm... I haven't seen much by SHAFT, but anything I have has crossed the limit.

Haruhi wasn't quite creepy enough to stop me watching, but her pervertedness definitely reduced my enjoyment of the show.

End of Evangelion was technically creepy as all hell in those respects, but that was intentional fan disservice and therefore didn't put me off.

It hasn't been shown in the UK since the short-lived AnimeCentral (and then Showcase TV) closed 4 years ago. The programmes they aired could have been more diverse, although what they did show was certainly acceptable. Many Sky customers probably never even knew they had it.

Finished watched that a few months ago. I wouldn't say it had creepy fanservice let alone "excessive" amounts, so I wouldn't worry about that.

What put me off enjoying it as much as I wanted to was the fact that I found it so damn depressing. It's not like I didn't already know what to expect, but even so.

But I was asking about the shows by SHAFT you found creepy, not KyoAni nor Gainax.

I saw the first episodes of the show with the suicidal teacher and the one with the guy who used to be a vampire. They were both way over my limit.

Then the limit is too damn low.

Kill la Kill has been well received by viewers, and with its TTGL ties I might use it as an excuse to break my 9-month long (self) anime watching drought.

Its protagonist Ryuuko looks cool too. But that's my view. Plus there's only been one episode so far. I'll start it up next week probably (watch me fail to do so).

I felt the same way Wiegert felt once I finished Madoka. But for some reason I felt the show's plot was parallel in some ways to Steins;gate's plot.

As for fanservice, there's basically little to nothing. Much of the show is purely story-driven, in my opinion.
