Evangelion 2.0 was a good movie for me. I was sorta glad to see Asuka back to her bitchy self despite the name change, and I did notice the big departures from the original TV show. For starters, Asuka isn't traumatised by dolls.

Video quality has improved impressively over the years too, and other areas in which anime has imrpoved a ton is in continuity and arguments, but that can also be said for TV in general.

Cano means plot here, more or less. In Spanish argumento is used to mean something closer to what for us is only meant in the legal usage of argument, i.e., a coherent story with clear motivations, etc., not a squabble or fight like we normally mean when we use the word arugment. [/language lesson]

I differ. The quality of ANIMATION has changed and improved a lot, yes. But art? come on. We are still seeing the same formula after 40 years: big eyes, spiky hair, blocky robots, shiny stuff. Think about it. There are only a handful of anime productions that break this seemingly standard industry rule. It has evolved, and a lot, of course. But it's the very same. Watch Astroboy and Metropolis and tell me something about it.

....

But I think that, stylistically, we are watching the same. And no, it's not a complaint.

Well, yes and no. I think one of the main problems is that Japanese business has this thing where anything radically different is usually frowned upon as being bad, and "the older generation always know what's right". This means that a lot of the head staff, directors and sponsors don't like change. People bought this last year, and the year before etc so it serves to reason that they will buy it again this year. One doesn't strive to bring change. One doesn't show off. One doesn't know better than seniors.

I think we might be moving away from the "blocky robots" (see: TTGL, Code Geass, Eureka Seven, etc), but most of the generic anime keeps to the style that is popular of the times. There are golden examples out there of releases bucking the trends (Tatami Galaxy comes to mind), but most cliches born from cost cutting and time saving techniques exist even today despite advances in animation techniques and technology and things.

I'm not really sure what you're implying with the Astro Boy and Metropolis reference... they're both done by the same author with his signature style.

Oh god.... bring back the lolis! Pleeeease, I need the lolis... :(

Your post is bad and you should feel bad.

AOS
To relate that to Anime, I dislike older shows because the art is aged and colours are faded compared to what we see now... but I've watched all of NGE, and I lived with it...

Yeah for mostly the same reasons, I don't like watching old anime. Only a select few for nostalgia purposes, but I just like the newer stuff since the quality and art style has improved.
I seriously hope you guys aren't basing your viewing choices simply on "whether it looks all shiny, modern and pretty". Just because something looks dated doesn't mean it isn't worth your time, and vice versa with modern shows. That would be like saying "This film is in black and white/art isn't on a good canvas or has faded/song doesn't have good modern recording values, therefore it has no merit creatively or artistically." You aren't really suggesting that, are you?

I blame it on the full moon 👎
Don't blame it on the moonlight,
blame it on the boogie! :sly:

Why don't you read the entire conversation first? I can watch anything theoretically, but there are thousands of shows out there and one has to find something interesting about it before deciding to watch it. I don't base my decisions on synopsizes, I base it on the art AND and people's recommendations. I can't help it if I don't find the art style appealing.

I've already watched EVA and Initial D so your argument is completely in aid now :P

Not that shiny things are bad...

**edit** Started watching Gun x Sword and am currently on EP. 7

Enjoying it 👍

As for Seikirei, I can't get into it :(

I did read the conversation, I was just adding my point of view so we could get some actual discussion in instead of photo/video dumps or other stuff.

Thanks for that Goddin. Some times this damned language still gets me. Plus it was 3:00 am here.

Translation: We are still looking at the same things 40 years hence. Some things have evolved, but essentially, it's the very same. For whatever reasons.

I kind of agree with you here, but could not the same be said for most things? (This discussion is weird: I kind of agree with you completely and also feel like there are things you're missing... though maybe I'll put them down to late night forum posting, tiredness and spontaneous spurts of typing. But hey, discussion and counter-arguments are good, like how the old philosophers of yore are always depicted :P)

Also, there were some discussion points I saw a few pages back by AOS comparing a few shows and other stuff; I'll try and post my two cents if I can muster up the stamina. And I'll try to keep them short and sweet, I know how daunting walls of text can be. Maybe I'll post some kind of relevant pics or something to make it a bit more interesting/readable :)

What did you think of them?

They were alright, but I'm getting the feeling you're making me look like I judge how good the entire show is based solely on what it looks like... in which case I'm going "Where the heck are you even going with this?"

It's soo cool!

If a show's story is good, I'll watch it and enjoy it. But when there isn't much production value behind the art and animation, the quality is significantly reduced. I don't need super amazing animation, I just want my shows to look good. If the drawings are bad and the animation is lacking, I'm going to have trouble getting into it. Especially with terrible character models, Fruits Basket can go to hell.

Soundtrack is also really important.

And I appreciate anime as art, which explains why I've been drawing and splooging over artwork and figurines...so.... yeah....

What else could anime be?

I see it as moving art. Each one telling it's own story, whether a good or bad one, a happy or sad, etc.

I thought we were done posting lolis? Though I did like maid Azusa :3

While I do like pretty things I do not pick a show based on what it looks like. Same applies to live action things as well. I'll watch anything if it's good and hell I've seen a lot of bad things too regardless of animation quality.

A good story is a good story and older animation isn't going to put me off to it. I'm gonna use Trigun as an example. I think it looks pretty bad however it's still in my top five favorite anime. The show just did everything right IMO.

Hello everyone, I Found this today on Anime News Network. Seems interesting.
