The Le Mans General Discussion Thread

Might as well tell everyone there at COTA to get used to that anthem because the inevitable is coming in a few weeks.

There is no inevitable in sportscar racing. You have the wrong thread.

Really? So the P1 Championship in ALMS wasn't inevitable? the P2 championship isn't inevitable? Maybe not in the GT classes (which I would agree) but with the Prototypes, I would have to disagree.

Besides, joking reference outside of Sportscar racing. No need to blow it out of proportion.

Hint: won today's Singapore Grand Prix (hence the "Get used to that anthem" comment)

I got it without the hint, he was obviously talking about the inevitable win Vettel will get here in F1 a couple months from now. Though I like to think Lewis will make it a consecutive win.

Great racing all weekend. Track was lightly staffed & seemed pretty disorganized all weekend. COTA told Stadium People earlier in the week to staff for 8-10K people & we heard there were about 11k tickets sold. Announced 3-day attendance was only ~33K. After rain all day on Friday, the weather was stunning on Saturday & Sunday. I'm working on more photos to post. I'll let you all know when they're up.

Also, I never got to post my Friday pics here, as I couldn't ever load this page for some reason. I'll get those up asap.

I see that the USCR 2014 calendar has been released, with Austin in the same slot as this year. I really hope the WEC comes back too. The USCR will lose a lot with no P1s and the P2s neutered so the DPs can compete with them. I wanna see P1s in full effect. They were nothing short of amazing. If you didn't go see these cars in the esses cutting through traffic like it was butter, you really missed it this weekend.

ETA my Friday post:

Hey y'all I just posted about 100 photos from a very wet Friday ALMS/WEC day at COTA. Still have lots more to sort, but it's not gonna happen tonight.

Not really. The DPs are actually being sped up to compete with P2 cars. Also, I disagree that USCR will lose a lot just for not having P1. Sure we won't be seeing Audis or Toyotas in the series (if we're honest, were we ever gonna see them again after Audi up and left the ALMS for the ILMC, then the WEC?), but the series is going to have a massive jump in car count as well as a massive bump in international appeal now that all of the classic American Enduros are finally in one series (Daytona 24, Sebring 12 Hour, Glen 6 Hr, Petit Le Mans).

From what I've read it's both...the P2s are being slowed and the DPs given more horsepower, etc. But I admit I haven't followed it closely.

I've been keeping close tabs on it and Nowhere has it been said that P2s are being slowed down. The DPs are being sped up with new aero pieces.

After 2016, there won't be a DP or an LMP2 anyway lol

The ACO and Imsa have been in talks for a while now, and I see 2 prototype categories in the future.

1.) LMP1 (wec only )
2.)USCC/ELMS/Asian Le Mans prototype which might be the secondary prototype in wec as well

I asked John Dagys on twitter. Here's how he responded...

Re: DPs:

johndagys @Austin_F1 dual element rear wing, diffuser, tunnels, weight reduction and more power.

Re: P2s:

@johndagys @Austin_F1 P2s will remain with same power most likely. Just added weight and LM24 aero kit.. and maybe steel brakes

With Porsche giving factory support to Core Autosport for a 2 car team next year in the USCR (and presumably a 2 car team in the WEC as well), it's rumored that the 991 RSR won't be made available for customer/privateer teams. I wonder where this leaves team Falken Tire? They wrecked their 2012 car at Baltimore and rebuilt a 2010 car for COTA which wasn't competitive. Their only option in USCR is GTLM since they're obviously not going to drop down to GTD and run Continental Tires on their car. :)

There's also Flying Lizard which I had hoped would be returning to GT(LM) next year. I guess they will keep running the GT3 and move to the GTD class.

Customer cars will be sold, but Porsche doubts they'll be ready for the Rolex 24. Flying Lizard will more than likely stay gtc/gtd in the USCC next season because both Patrick Long and Jorg Bergmeister are with different programs now

Where did CORE come from though?
They spend one year with the car and get a factory driver off the bat, and now they're getting a full fledged factory team?
What ever happened to the Flying Lizards? I see no reasons why it shouldn't have been THEM that gets the support. Core hasn't exactly been competitive this year.

What REALLY would have been sweet is if Porsche had gone with Falken. That would have been awesome, but I can't imagine it would make Michelin very happy.

And their you go. Michelin are Longtime partners with Porsche (and are so with their 2014 Program) so that wouldn't have worked well.

Classic Porsche. Porsche backs teams in cycles.

New regs come out: Porsche builds a car. They choose an up and coming successful team to be the defacto factory team. After the rules change a time or two more, they decide to take another up and coming successful team as the defacto factory effort. Teams like the lizards usually end up where they are now as Porsche customers. They won't switch brands because everyone has always seen the flying lizard Porsche, so Porsche uses those teams as part of its business model to sell spare parts, customer cars, and upgrades. Quite shrewd indeed if you ask me

@Mods, also I think come end of this year, and start of next year, with it being a brand new reg set and new era for LMP1 and LM racing, we should have a "Le Mans General Discussion V2" topic.

Or perhaps different bits of info could have their own threads instead of two general topics where info gets dumped and easily confused in? 💡
