Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2025

When will some of the Chinese manufacturers show up in fast driving games? BYD, Geely/Lync & Co, Nio, and so many are quite impressive.

This is from 5 !!! years ago. It's long overdue.

Lynk & Co, Nio, & MG have all been given attention through both Forza games. I think Project Cars 3 even showcased the Nio.

Here's to more attention, It's interesting how the street racing VHS tapes of the 90s from Japan were at every tiny import repair shop sparking interest, but even now only reports of the 10s of thousand street racer crackdowns leak out - 74,000 as of a few months ago, 👀, but not any getaway in Stockholm like bits from say Zhuhai . Seems they need better marketing.

If the manufacturers want more attention, it's more of a surprise Polyphony hasn't orchestrated a deal with them, yet.

But, I'm not positive any of those Chinese brands will be finding a spot on the roster list for TXR. The series has had some oddballs, but the oddballs have been pretty recognizable cars & are still outnumbered by the JDM list (going by Zero & 3). Even the 'D2 Mercedes' & 'JGTC Skyline' were still a highly modified Aristo & R34.

Now that TXR is confirmed to have licensed cars, I see the car list taking inspiration from the MF Ghost anime and a bit of Assoluto Racing - a mix of JDM, American muscle and European exotics, but not going way too overboard. Something that realistically portrays Japanese street racing culture would really define its theme.

But since Genki are starting completely from scratch - maybe 30 to 50 cars at launch would be realistic?
We don't really know how far along they are in modeling other cars or exactly how far into 2025 the launch date is (I'm gonna guess prolly around this time at the least), so I kinda expect somewhere around 80-90 maybe.

But since each crew would usually center around one or two car models and some cars would appear in multiple crews, with the wanderers usually being the ones with the unusual examples, and there's not exactly much need to make sure they're balanced against each other since extreme tuning is the kind of the point with this series, having a lower car list compared to other open world racers isn't exactly an issue.

No one cares about these cars

Those screenshots they released on Steam are not bad, but I'm guessing they're from a very early build b/c the R34 & the Supra look really well done in comparison.

How long do you suspect it'll be before we see gameplay footage?
Based on some fragmentary information, it seems that they have already spent more than a year on the development of TXR2025.
(For example, their trademark registration activities started in 2023, and Genki's move to a new building was probably for that reason.)

But I'm not too optimistic. I think the first gameplay trailer will probably be released after spring 2025.
There are several reasons why I make this assumption.
  1. Modern video game development tends to require much more time and cost than in the PS3/Xbox 360 era.
  2. Genki is a mid-sized developer, meaning they don't have the budget or large numbers of people to devote to game development like Criterion(EA), Turn 10, or Polyphony Digital.
  3. At least for now, the fact that they are releasing TXR2025 only on Steam means that they may not have support from console manufacturers such as Sony or Microsoft.
  4. Genki's current "main business" is supporting the development of games for other companies, which means they are not in an environment where they can focus solely on the development of TXR2025.
Currently, TGS2024 is being held in Japan. This event is the biggest promotional opportunity for Japanese game developers and developers outside of Japan who want to promote their games to Japanese people.

However, Genki did not participate in this event and only delighted us with the Supra.

Perhaps this is yet another piece of evidence that shows that they are not yet far enough in development to be able to participate in TGS and exhibit the TXR2025.

I'm perfectly fine with them deciding to focus on development rather than promotion right now, especially in the face of recent high-profile flops that promised the world and delivered a plastic globe on a keychain.

TXR has always been a niche series, even among the racing game community. At this point word of mouth is doing well to create awareness among groups like us that will definitely be interested in playing it, advertising to the game playing public at large can come later when there's enough done for a demo version to really give an idea of what it's all about.

Unfortunately the modeling of the FD3S doesn't look as good as the Supra or R34. Probably because the shape of the front bumper is not very similar.

But this game is a TXR, not a GT. I'm sure there will be a lot of full-bumper style aftermarket bumpers, so if you don't like the stock bumper, you can just replace it. I definitely will.

And it's amazing that they announced the GR86.
This also increases the possibility that they will introduce other "new" cars into the game.

It also seems like a new car is introduced each week. If the release date is still far away into next year (like say, realistically, summer), with four cars a month, then if the game releases around June next year, then we'll launch with around 40-50 cars.

I suspect this is going squarely after the driving fast through traffic mirror scraping that has been taking over TikityTokity using AC mods.

Now if... Gran Turismo 7 added a tourist option on some tracks for "HPDE/Track day" style events where there was quite a bit of moving chicanes on the Nordschleife or high way courses, even if they were at best "semi-permenant" for the thrill of lots of close passing, how would that draw streamer attention and usage?

I do miss the battles though, the flashing your brights only to find that you picked a battle that was grossly tilted one way or another.

Having beaten around 370 opponents in txr zero you could say I am excited for this game. Never thought the day would come.

Perhaps most interesting is the success of nightrunners might have something to do with it

Night Runner's isn't that similar to Tokyo Xtreme Racer though, not from a gameplay standpoint or anything relative to that, but I'd assume it was way before that. Assuming Genki has made this project for a long while now (since SB: Xtreme when it failed back in 2017). So I'd assume they'd had this project they wanted to make for a long while now before Night Runner's even became a thing.

Not really?

The game's sticking to what it always has been. A 1-vs.-1 race with a "Street Fighter" combat meter to determine who wins & loses. I don't remember much on 3, but Zero also had a bit of strategy/luck involved trying to use certain routes to your advantage against the higher HP opponents, esp. the ones who only appeared under certain circumstances.

Also, and this is the most important point for me, TXR is a video game that is not too serious in a good way.

They took Japanese tuning culture and street racing and even incorporated anime-like excessive style.

King Speed's Skyline/WRX is surrounded by lightning while driving, and his iconic rivals' cars often have flashy wraps that symbolize them.

King Speed's WRX at the ITC. His WRX has the " 壱撃離脱 Ichigeki ridatsu (hit and away)" kanji painted on it, showing off that he is such a extreme-skilled driver that he can win battles in an instant.

And Red Devil's car is... a Gundam transformed into a car. These were excesses that never see in the real street scene.

But it gave them unforgettable personalities as game characters, and turned a simple street race into a saga like an epic story of a hero saving the world.

I think this is one of the important things that made TXR TXR, which Assetto Corsa's MOD and Night-Runner don't have.

I hope we get pretty extensive choice of body kits this time around. It might be cool if each aftermarket body parts gives certain stats like in Armored Core.

Let's be honest. The Rolling Guy's team is a part of TXR. They are always the first team you encounter, so seeing the tease of the AE86 Levin (And I assume the Trueno version is in), doesn't surprise me. They can NEVER leave out the Rolling Guys. Without the Rolling Guys, it ain't TXR for me.

I expect the new generation of drivers using ZN8 to take the Rolling Guy name and after beating them all, OG Rolling Guy will emerge as the faster team than them.
The analogy is like the relationship between King Speed and Purple Meteor. Since Rolling Guy is already a veteran of Shutoko, their disciples who admired them formed a new Rolling Guy with ZN8 and ZN6, which carry the 86 name.
And now that they have been defeated, their mentor, OG Rolling Guy, shows up to avenge their loss.

I think this will allow us to depict the changes since the TXR of the past while still expressing the greatness of OG Rolling Guy.

Only time will tell if the members of the Rolling Guy's will use the new GR86. But knowing Genki, they might still use the AE86 Levin/Trueno for nostalgia's sake.

The GR86 might be used for other teams such as Elegant Wild, Tokio Jungle and so on (If those teams return that is).

I can see Rolling Guy having at least one Levin and Tureno, then two modern 86s. I'm not sure if the leader should be a heavily modified Tureno or a sleek new GR.

If Rolling Guy keeps all the old stock, R. Gangs should have all new.

I'm predicting that either Rolling Guy #1 will run a GR86, Rolling Master will have one, or all of R.Gangs will be using the GR86.
