Sports fans are all the same. Soccer fans like to ignore and pretend that it's okay for the players to flop around like they got shot at the slightest contact, and hockey fans like to pretend there's no issue with concussions in the NHL.
It doesn't just go away if you just brush it under the rug. It also doesn't make it okay for Ronaldo to pretend he got shot yesterday just because some of the Spanish players embellished too. It just makes everyone look bad.
I don't think they do. Most neutrals detest divers and it's only when someone dives for the team they support do they downplay it/accept it. Personally I hate divers regardless of their team, therefore I wasn't too unhappy to see Drogba leave as it was downright embarrassing at times.
I think any alleged dives should be reviewed after the match by a panel and if a player is found guilty then a heavy suspension should be handed out. It's difficult though as what's to say the player had intentions of diving and didn't just lose their footing ?
Also I think the rules state that simulation is allowed. So if a player was touched illegally* then they are allowed to roll on the floor in agony, thus simulating. Only when there is no contact and they roll on the floor is it classed as diving, a bookable offence. I'm not entirely sure on this but I do recall it being said in commentary some time ago.
* Yes I am aware of what that sounds like.
