Sports fans are all the same. Soccer fans like to ignore and pretend that it's okay for the players to flop around like they got shot at the slightest contact, and hockey fans like to pretend there's no issue with concussions in the NHL.

It doesn't just go away if you just brush it under the rug. It also doesn't make it okay for Ronaldo to pretend he got shot yesterday just because some of the Spanish players embellished too. It just makes everyone look bad.

I don't think they do. Most neutrals detest divers and it's only when someone dives for the team they support do they downplay it/accept it. Personally I hate divers regardless of their team, therefore I wasn't too unhappy to see Drogba leave as it was downright embarrassing at times.

I think any alleged dives should be reviewed after the match by a panel and if a player is found guilty then a heavy suspension should be handed out. It's difficult though as what's to say the player had intentions of diving and didn't just lose their footing ?

Also I think the rules state that simulation is allowed. So if a player was touched illegally* then they are allowed to roll on the floor in agony, thus simulating. Only when there is no contact and they roll on the floor is it classed as diving, a bookable offence. I'm not entirely sure on this but I do recall it being said in commentary some time ago.

* Yes I am aware of what that sounds like.

Yes and no. No we don't like to ignore it and pretend it's okay - it's disgraceful and it's exactly why people who hate the sport do so. But yes to your second paragraph.

Sorry, the correction should have been by and large it seems like people ignore it from their team. In hockey, people pretend it's not an issue because it's "old time hockey", or something similarly ridiculous. Of course, it doesn't seem like you'd be supporting any diving regardless of the team :sly:

I find it a little surprising that the governing bodies haven't cracked down on that. In my mind, pretending you got shot is worthy of a suspension. I guess it would be hard to police but it seems like a line should be drawn.

"Simulation" should be a yellow card, officially.

Wikipedia states that yellow cards should be given for the following offenses :

  • Fakes an injury or exaggerates the seriousness of an injury
  • Fakes a foul (dives) or exaggerates the severity of a foul

This makes about 70% of penalty decisions incorrect, or at least bookable for the attacker, since many players hit the deck as soon as they are touched, which is clearly "exaggerating the severity of a foul." Unless it's at the referee's discretion, but even then I've never seen a yellow given for diving with contact that the referee was aware of.

Also what about shirt pulling ? Very often players "dive" when their shirt is pulled as they show the referee they are being fouled, which they are. Surely the rule indicates they must be booked if they do this. This is why I always thought players were allowed to simulate, I've never heard a commentator say that players who dive from shirt pulling should be booked.

Also how is Drogba even still playing ?

Right i watched that messi video and i got annoyed and stopped halfway through..not because i was shocked but i got bored!

Every player dives, cheats and gesticulates to the crowd like that! no one is innocent! im surprised that everyone is surprised!! yeah the refs should do more but its up to them and FIFA/UEFA to enforce more tough laws!

Theres a big game on in less than 45 mins!..this is a UEFA 2012 thread and not a diving/simulation thread!

I think that Portugal played better for the first 45 minutes, the second half Spain matched them and it was quite evenly matched. On extra time Portugal was too tired and Spain dominated. If Ronaldo hadn't decided to take the last penalty and had taken the 4th instead, Portugal may have won it.

What annoyed me wasn't the diving (I might be slightly biased) rather how on two occasions play was stopped when Nani had very good changes at scoring.

I do agree that there was a lot of diving from both side but more by Portugal. However, each time a player 'dived' was because they had been fouled in some way although were exaggerated quite a bit.

Spain dug deep and found that extra something to contest and basically dominate Portugal in extra time.
The game as a whole, was a close contest and both teams had their chances to score, in the end it came down to penalties, and Spain won it.

So, they deserved to win it, like i said before diving or no diving, it's done. Let's move on to Germany v Italy.

YES!!! lets move on to germany v italy!! finally!!

Does anyone think that italy would cause an upset?..'cause ive got a feeling that they might..

I also have that feeling. And i'm hoping they do.

:lol::lol:

Italy have got a player who born in ghana though..i think you can guess which one?!:sly:

I didn't say which way it'd be over by half time...

That was a great 5 minutes of pressure and chances though. Nice.

It's not Balotelli - he's of Ghanian descent but was born in Palermo...

Certainly didn't expect that, I too was expecting Germany to dominate, and they are. Good play from Italy there though.

Damn, thhis isn't looking good anymore. Not as good as the first five minutes, at least... :indiff:

But, yeah, I'm expecting a comeback.

I hope. At least if Italy do go through, it will make England look less crap.

If Balotelli makes the Italians champion, what will happen to him? He already thinks he is the greatest player alive. :P
