Road America Round - 20th Feb 2019

Get in the mood for this weeks round by watching coverage of the 1964 Road America 500. Some fabulous cars are featured! Note the Chaparral Team are racing both a Chaparral 2A and a car referred to as a Lightweight Stingray and the film starts with Roger Penske doing a lap in this car. We know this car now, as one of the five Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport's which were built (3 Coupes and 2 Roadsters) to take on the Ford powered Cobra's. 125 were to have been built, but the Project was cancelled by GM and the cars were sold to private owners.

Wow! The track itself is pretty much identical. Don't you just love watching these old machines fighting for grip with those horrendously stiff tyres and wagon suspensions? Every turn is a dance.

Hi Napalm - I think @beachboy6658 is sitting out the next 3 rounds so if you take over his car - number 24 Aston Martin DBR1/300 that would be helpful.

Yes - Road America is one of the few tracks where the layout has remained unchanged from building to present day. Kerbs have been added, trees cut down and spectators moved back, but the layout is the same. The pits were unpaved - just mud, which was ok in the dry! - obviously the pits are now paved.

On the Monday thread there is a film which dates from 1958 which features some of the earliest onboard camera work shot from a Porsche 356 Speedster during actual racing and qualifying conditions - amazing coverage!

I think I ought to get some dancing lessons in before this evening. Maybe the type 40 tango. I haven't given the Lotus a try yet!

Sadly no time for me to practise this week and it is difficult track with the potential to make up lots of time - regardless of this I'm looking forward to tonight!
Great film again, Sick. Had the version of track, with the bridge, at left hand, in one of TOCCA games. Been in Ride games, as well, I don't mind the track, good selection of bends.

I'm not around tonight guys, still out of action from this bug.

Get well soon rj!

And also, since I'm new to it, does the amount of Lotus pitstops remain the same - at two?

Yes - hopefully it will work out well.

Does the start procedure remain unchanged tonight?

Yes Tavilha - it has worked well for the last couple of races!

@Napalm_LT - there is definitely room for you tonight!

Don´t know what exactly happened got stuck after accident could recover to box but then I was stuck in the box and it wouldn´t let me on track again. This happened about 4 min before qualifying was ending. Had to restart the game but when I could enter the room the race has already begun.

Wish you all the best - see you next race

Considering I hadn't practiced until I joined John's room!!!

Strangely the Lotus felt great in qualy, and I surprised myself with the time, but come race start it felt odd. It wouldn't turn the same and the braking points were different which resulted in me missing a few corners at first. It took me a few laps for my mind to reset to the changed handling.
I usually reselect the setup I'm using before the race but forgot to this time. My qualifying time shocked me me to much. :P

Unlucky with your off track moment @joedakiss. I came out just behind you after my 2nd pitstop and thought I might struggle to pass you.

Well done team Foyt. We're staging a bit of a fight back. 👍

Sorry for causing the big accident, had picked up damage, so hard driving the car. Think when people see me on track, faster people, approach with caution, still using controller. The car can sometimes move different through bend, catch me out.

Well done to Harsk who is an Ace with his, more pratice needed.👍

I just want to take a minute to shout-out @lancerevoo performance lately.

He deserves to be praised. He has found extra speed in the last few weeks and it shows in the race and championship results. He has become a top contender. Furthermore, he is very consistent and quite a fair but hard driver to overtake, making him a great adversary.

I think it shows that practice makes the master. This should encourage anyone to find that extra pace.

Wed Nassau Round 8 Road America.jpg

Above - points marked in red are scored by a substitute driver - Napalm for BeachBoy.

Sharp currently on top with 174, Penske 164, Foyt - had a good round - are now on 149.

Above - a car we need in this game - the Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport - very light, very powerful, very fast and aerodynamically unsound! Below footage of one of just 2 Roadster versions (3 Coupes were made).

Note - the next round on 27th February will be at Monza Historic - I have changed the track as this layout is more appropriate to the old cars - Note there will be light rain at the start!

Monday will still be at Monza Historic Combined.
