Just started AC Shadows (by taking a "trip" to New Zealand) and it has exceeded my expectations. I was never a huge fan of AC series to be honest, so maybe the bar was set a bit low due to that, but still. We'll see how it feels as I get farther into the story and gameplay, but for now, it's been excellent. I know some reviews said that this is a great game for people who have been invested in AC series and liked the latest RPG entries, but I think it's just a good game no matter if you like AC or not.
I have to say, please play with Immersive Mode (Japanese VO), it's so, so good! English VO is so so from what I've heard, especially Naoe isn't convincing to me in English. However, she (and the rest of the cast so far) sounds great in Japanese! Some people mentioned that lip sync isn't there for Japanese, but I think I have to disagree with that. Maybe it's not perfect, but it's good enough.
As far as the visuals, game looks stunning with Ray Tracing GI and the addition of weather, wind physics, and seasons is able to breath a lot of life into the world. Speaking of the world, it's beautifully crafted. This is where my main, and only so far, issue is with the game. Performance is not great. I'm running it at 1440p with a RTX 4060 and I have to use Performance DLSS 4 with frame gen on Medium/High settings to get the game around 60 fps most of the time. Without frame gen it would probably be around 40 fps on average. It actually doesn't feel like there's much input lag due to frame gen here, which is impressive, but upscaling is often very noticeable.
Gameplay wise, it feels like the most polished AC game to date. It's not perfect mind you, but it's leagues better, in my opinion, compared to previous entries. I know some people who hold parkour of old AC titles in high regard are disappointed with it here, but for me parkour never felt amazing in AC, so I'd say it's serviceable here, just like it always was. It's a non-issue for me.
