I haven't mastered it, but through Notepad++, I was successfully able to make a CSS sheet for an eBook tonight. I am slowly adding elements to it based on sample material I have as well as information from various websites. Using CSS makes formatting and styling simpler than trying to code everything within an HTML file manually. All you have to do is link back to the CSS file and call up the appropriate items to use in your material.

I am making an eBook just for practice. The intended medium is for eBook readers ranging from e-Readers themselves to eBook apps for mobile devices. But again- I am making one for practice before deciding to officially make myself any kind of eBook author.

Not necessarily *today*, but I successfully created a test eBook using the MOBI format. The MOBI format primarily is used for devices like the Amazon Kindle devices. A big difference I noted is that the different anchor tags I had initially set up work unlike in the more preferred and more adaptive EPUB format. I am mostly trying to find a workflow I can best be comfortable with. Some of the formatting gets removed from the original HTML I set up. So I have to see how I could better set up these eBooks for EPUB.

Bringing a website for a client live this week, hoping it all goes to plan. I have to admit, building bespoke systems is one of the most satisfying things in the world of web development for me, even if it comes with a million little frustrations!

I went ahead and preordered a steam controller that just arrived today! I needed something to replace the PS3 controller I've been using. I will firing up the PC to give it a go on a few select games here in a sec, then work on a little review for it.

I ordered the entry-level Amazon Kindle e-Ink e-Reader on Wednesday, and I got it today. Big thing for me is that I have a proper device to test certain eBooks I create, especially in MOBI format. I will try to utilize my various resources to properly make and test eBooks. Only problem is that the base Kindle e-Reader has no backlight. So I'll need some sufficient light to be able to read material.

So I bought a new Thermaltake Poseidon Z Kailh Brown Switches keyboard and replaced my old HDD in my laptop with a HyperX Fury 120GB SSD. Fresh installed Windows 10 and this thing is blazing fast!

My G9x has been registering single clicks as doubles lately so I've switched back over to my R.A.T-7 all the while contemplating an upgrade to a Logi G502.

I still adore the R.A.T-7 but my god, switching from that back to the G9x is just an insane difference.

This wouldn't be an issue if you would buy a Steelseries product.

I adore my G502. I still haven't got around to using any more than six of the buttons though in the six or eight months I've had it... need.more.things.to.click.

So, after finding out my laptop has two hidden RAM slots, I proceeded to open up the front fascia, take off the keyboard and switch my RAM from under my laptop into the slots under the keyboard. Then I ordered more HyperX Impact RAM to install underneath. I look forward to having 32gig... Shame my processor only goes up to 3.5Ghz with all four cores running...

Same... I wish upgrading it to a better cpu would help out but I see minimal gains...

I would have put one that could push up to 3.8GHz with all four cores running, but I was worried about the heat in such a compact laptop. That being said, I could push this to 3.8GHz and I think it would handle it pretty well anyway, but I don't want to risk it really. For the most part I don't have any issues with anything. I even managed to tweak my FSX to give me a good 25-35fps in the cockpit of the PMDG 737 with a whole bunch of addons, and the only time it struggles is coming into London (typical, the one city I love flying into). That being said, I suppose pushing it that little bit more may help me out with some extra frames in Assetto Corsa...

Same story here. I've got a HP 15" notebook with a AMD A10 (and soon to have that Samsung 850 SSD) and it's a refurbished. Why was it you may ask? It gets too bloody hot. The case screw beside the heat sink gets so hot, it slips right through, and people were complaining about the hinges failing...

Nothing that Lock-tight can't fix. Saved about $150 buying it off of woot.

Finally made the jump to an all-in-one liquid cooler. Got a Corsair H110i GTX and am very impressed so far. At 100% load my FX-8350 sits at 36C.

On purchase of my laptop I had a similar issue with heating after a few months, like hot to the extent where you couldn't touch the keyboard for more than maybe 20 seconds. Opened it up, got some special insulation tape, some MX-5 Cooling paste, and Locktite and after about an hour of work on it, removing each component and checking it, sealing every gap that needed to be sealed, I dropped the temperatures a good 30°C under full load. Now the fans don't even go past midspeed for the CPU or GPU.

Also for better cooling, I recommend getting some thin copper sheets and placing them in the case to improve the distribution (a mod I still need to do on my own laptop)

Well for me all I did aside from locktite is get a 60mm usb fan and an Apple charging cable, and make a USB fan... keeps the fan down like you say to around midspeed for it... I think it's down 20C too.

Finally got round to making my final upgrade to my 2011 13" Macbook Pro. I thought the hard drive had died so replaced it with a 500 GB SSD only to find out that it was only the hard drive connection cable that had died. The starting specs were a 320 GB HDD with 4 GB RAM and a disk drive, it's now got a 120 GB SSD (in place of the disk drive) and a 500 GB SSD onboard with 8GB of RAM. It's amazing how these have transformed the performance in all situations.
So, the replacement cable died but all diagnostics pointed to the 500 GB SSD. So a wipe and a test in an external bay later all fingers were pointed back at the cable. New SSD to motherboard cable and all is good again. Hoping this doesn't become a regular issue.

Also 16GB of RAM. Yay, or nay?

I run VMs a lot, so 16GB is a must for me. Not sure if you need it otherwise.
Do you have any recommendations for a good windows VM? I really need a windows one for some of the scientific software coming up in my degree.

It would be pretty hard to beat Oracle's VirtualBox on pretty much any platform.

I use VirtualBox for all of mine.

Hyper-V now comes with Windows from 8 up as well.

Question:

I'm getting an SSD for my laptop, which currently has an HDD. SSD is 500gb, HDD is currently 1 TB. I don't think I'll ever fill all that up, and a majority of the space I've used so far (300 +/- gb) is full of pictures, of which I need to delete soon.

There's only one bay in my laptop, so I'll have to clone the data on the HDD to the SSD. Question being, what do I need to do so, and approximately how long would it take to transfer the full 300 gb?

I have a huge amount invest into flight simulation, so I'd like to know if all of that already installed will still be installed or not. To reinstall all my addons would take a week at least, of full downloading and installation of those files.

Thanks

If you can only connect a single drive at a time through the SATA connector(s), then one solution would be a SATA-to-USB adapter; they're readily available at Newegg and Amazon, and I'm sure a number of other sources. Naturally use USB3 if you can; it's still likely to be an all-afternoon project for the copying.

If you're going to copy the flight simulator stuff verbatim, including paths, then you shouldn't have issues but don't hold me to that.

I have a related problem, I have a dedicated 250GB SSD for FSX. Since I have less than 40GB of free space left on the drive, I'm seriously considering replacing it with a 500GB drive especially with the attractive prices they're going for now. I'm wondering if I can simply copy from the old drive to the new then remove the old; the new drive should end up with the same drive letter the old had. So I wouldn't have to uninstall/reinstall a lot of payware (which I'm sure would take me well in excess of a week), right?

See I was thinking about doing this if I get the usb connector, to just copy and paste it over. I have two two (yes, 2 seperate) terabyte western externall HDDs, but I haven't found many others doing it this way...

For drives containing the OS, you will need to use cloning software to duplicate a working drive. It will be identical and ready to go when swapped out.

Any secondary drives can be done by simple c&p then assigning the same drive letter.

👍

I always install games to a dedicated HDD/SSD separate from the OS SSD.

ah.... So I'll need the adapter, cloning software, and what else?
