The non-linear feel of the game, where you can duck in and out of license tests or missions, do a few races, improve your lowly starter car to a point where you win the races. Then doing better and better races and winning more and more money until you have an embarrassment of riches and still a ton of races and gold medals to win/achieve.

Gran Turismo 4 encaspulates all that makes a GT game what it is. It's been downhill ever since.
