Would people really prefer having to pay for Battle Passes or monthly DLC packs for cars and race tracks?

That doesn't make any sense. You paid for new game (GT7) and another new content should be free why?
Generally, because of the MTX system. This is how Rockstar handles its DLC, releasing every update & new item for free because MTX can make up the cost & then some.

In GT7's sense, before the backlash, PD could release a 1 million credit car new-to-the-game for free, but players without credits may become enticed to spend $20 on a credits pack to buy it in-game. So, they weigh the options: $2 for the car like GT:Sport with instant access vs. no money for the car, but a possible chance of someone buying a $20 2-million credit pack to bypass racing for it. Despite that 1 option guarantees money in return, studios have done enough "research" to find the gamble can be worth it; see Rockstar - 2019 saw over $500 million in MTX.

Not saying or believing PD goes down the route, esp. after last week, but companies handing out free content is possible if they can setup their games to encourage revenue through purchasing the in-game money than the content itself.

You also have to keep in mind that GT5 had a mix of both free and paid DLC, so it wouldn't be the first time. However, a repeat of the paid for, single use paint chips from GT5 can burn, PDs first attempt to 'nickel and dime' players.

Hm, i've finished GT5 to 99,8% incl. every Race*, licence [...] just everything with Gold.
And in my mind you didn't needed those dlc's at all to proceed, because i neither bought one of them ;)

(* besides 24h Le Mans)

That's kind of the point, the dlc was the players choice, it added value, it didn't act as a paid shortcut

iRacing is definitely expensive, but the game is at least up-front with you. It tells you exactly what you're getting for what price, and pretty much all the extras are just that, extras, and once you pay for them, you have immediate access to them. The only thing you absolutely need to pay for in iRacing is the subscription fee to play.
I wish more people would get this. I went from doing iracing twice a week and only one series to save on costs to five times a week running multiple series after the GT7 economy blunder. With iracing I am able to set my budget for the year and I know that as I go forward I will have to purchase license less content each year. To me it's a no brainer.

To answer OP's question. I don't think I would want monthly paid DLCs but if they could release bi-annual or annual DLC with substantial content drops I'd be more than willing to pay for them.

To answer your topic question, no. A Battle Pass system would be awful for Gran Turismo IMO, but I also just hate Battle Pass systems because they drive FOMO. We already have enough of that with the UCD and LCD.

I think they nailed it with the Sport model. Have MTX on the side for those that want to buy it, but for the most part keep all the content updates free. There's always whales and impatient people who will buy the MTX credits anyways, whether it be a YouTuber or just some super-collector, so the additional income stream from MTX won't be compromised while still keeping the playerbase happy.
