Just looks like dried mud to me, well in the first picture it does. I'd have to see what the effect is on stages like Mexico, Australia and Finland by comparison, as the ground there is different in colour and composition.

Had some fun earlier getting the trophy for completing a stage using the wrong tyres - plenty of good fun sliding around on ice - surprisingly realistic too.

Sorry I should've been more precise, I meant the dust cloud kicked up behind the car in the two dark shots. There's very little light, and the ground dirt is very very dark, and yet the dust cloud is bright orange like it's lit up in broad daylight. It just doesn't look very good to me. The graphics all around look pretty bad for a current gen game though imo.

I see what you mean now - yep, that dust is pretty bright and uncompromising. With WRC 4 the graphics were similar, but at least the photo mode would allow you to blur and use tilt-shift levels of focus to disguise that kind of thing.

Like I say, a missed opportunity having such a basic photo mode.

I think we've both just been spoiled rotten by Driveclub mate! Lol.

I really reallyyy need my rally fix NOW! Haven't had a decent rally game to play since Dirt 3.
Isn't D4 out already? Sorry been out of touch.

Oh majestic rally sim, where art thou? :dopey:

DiRT Rally is the latest incarnation. It's currently in "Early Access" on the PC via steam, and is much more of a simulator than anything seen since Richard Burns Rally (2004). You can play it today, but only if you have a good gaming PC. <if you do, buy it now, don't wait!>

The Early Access is currently making very good progress (it's awesome basically, content will be something like 8 rally events, 3 rallycross events and Pikes Peak hillclimb, all stages are modelled on real famous stages from actual rallies, all rallycross tracks are modelled on real life World Rallycross venues and are officially licensed), but DiRT Rally final release on PC and consoles will definitely not be before 2016.

Hey, thanks for the info Skazz! Where you been?! All good? :)

I'm thrilled to know that and will patiently wait until next year to get this on X1... till then it's FM6 and H3.

Like I said before, there are stages where the fps and tearing is bad...
But..this is only on a few stages, for the most part WRC 5 is great fun.
Overall I am enjoying the physics, force feedback and sliding the car around. ( PS4 )

The first patch on consoles arrives early nov. , hopefully they can fix some of the problems.

Damn that first Sardinia stage is tight, nasty and fun.

I'm also enjoying the night stages, having done a couple in Finland now, being far better than Monte Carlo. I hope to get a few good stage replays uploaded tomorrow - at least the YouTube compression isn't going to do much harm to the visuals ;)

Considering my expectations from early trailers, first impressions are good.

I've literally only played for 5 minutes, but the graphics look fine and the cars behave as you would expect. It's perhaps a little easy (which is surprising considering some of the gameplay videos out there...) but accurate enough to satisfy the rally fans among us.

I think I will have plenty of fun with this while waiting for Dirt Rally (and potentially SLRE) to hit PS4

A point worth mentioning from @RL_23 is that the second stage in the Rallye De France will give you an instant penalty for no reason. At the second stage's end, press Square to try again, then Circle once you are in the start screen to exit to the main menu. You can then re-enter the career mode and it will start you on stage three, minus the penalty.

MeanElf: Nice video, it's not easy in the dark :)

Thanks for the info regarding the bug in France.
According to their twitterpage this is one of the things that will be fixed in the patch.

Does anyone have an idea when the private lobby part of MP will be unlocked? As there is a padlock on it, does this mean that certain other features might possibly get upgraded later on?

Sorry for the questions, I only really followed the game's pre-release progress here.

Yep, having a lot of fun with this game. Yes its not perfect: the sound is crap, the replays are crap, and the graphics aren't good enough to even justify having a photo mode (gimmicky add on in most games if you ask me). But overall it feels somewhat like driving a rally car and its very rewarding when you get it right.

Rally France, last stage in a WRC spec car. Awesome

I'd rather wait for something that looks AND sounds like a rally sim should. Next year: Dirt 4.

You mean Dirt Rally? Anyone know if they are going to continue with the Dirt series alongside Dirt Rally?

Have never owned a dirt game as they look like cr@p, just curious

Dirt Rally, yeah that's the 4th one coming out next year, correct?

Wow.. really? You think Dirt 2 and 3 look like crap?

No one knows what Codemasters' plan is. Dirt Rally isn't officially Dirt 4, and they haven't announced anything about Dirt 4 specifically. DR might be a separate series, or it might be a PC only title, or it might be a beta to D4. Who knows?

IMO, in terms of graphics Dirt looks great, but its physics and track design let it down somewhat. They're still good, fun, simcade racers though.

In terms of being a rally sim yeah. Don't get me wrong, the graphics and sounds etc. look great but the arcade style gameplay is not my cup of tea.

Dirt rally on the other hand...

I am really interested in picking this up for the PS4, been dying to get my rally racing fix and with Dirt Rally only on PC at the moment, this looks to be the best bet. I played WRC 4 on the PS3 and was pleasantly surprised by it. The graphics were good enough and I had a lot of fun playing it. However, the sound effects were pretty terrible if I'm honest. How are the sounds in this?

Other than that, I wish there were some older rally cars to play with, but I'll take what I can get.

The sounds are not any better than WRC4 possibly a bit worse, though the ambient noise is stronger - but I suspect that you weren't too concerned about that part of the aural palette.

Visibly it is a slight improvement, more in terms of atmosphere - the physics is different, but not bad - I'd say that as you enjoyed WRC 4 then you'll be happy enough with this. The sounds though will definitely let it down for you if that kind of thing is really important.

Pretty good summary. It's not perfect, but a good step on from WRC 4 on all fronts and plenty to keep you going until Dirt Rally is released
