Some observations on the first four stages at Portugal.
  • No screen tearing
  • Tarmac handling is weird; feels excessively grippy. In retrospect I wonder if the harder compound would have been better. This was my first experience of tarmac in a rally game, so maybe that is normal?
  • Tyre wear was harsh. I'm still getting used to understanding the service area, but think I have a pair of softs and a pair of mediums left for the last six stages.
  • The sunrise and sunset colours were beautiful
Yeah the amount of tyre sets it has given us for this rally is harsh to put it politely. The tarmac handling on this event will feel a bit odd because we’re using gravel tyres, will feel quite snappy.

Made it to the first service with a half working mitsubishi...just, those bollards in the twisty village part on the 2nd stage are brutal to go into head on. Had a great 1st stage aswell

I gave it my best effort… but the car was so battered near the end that when I hit the water splash it actually slowed it to 0 🤣

A sad retirement.

The end of the rally is brutal, last service is four stages from the end so you're having to do 50 km on one set of tires and with no repairs. I binned it on the last stage so I'm lucky to have finished, losing "only" 2 minutes to a reset and a puncture repair. My poor boxer engine probably didn't even make 100bhp towards the end.

Finished my run. Some hairy moments but considering the rally I'm happy with my drive. No big mistakes like in the first two rounds, So hopefully I've put myself into a competitive position for the some good points.

Certainly looks that way so far. The Fords looking strong in Portugal.

I see most of us have gotten our efforts in earlier this time. I didn't want have a repeat of Sweden where it was quite a rush on the final evening to complete my run.

This time around with Christmas and new years if I'm not stuffed to the brim with grub I'll probably be too drunk to be doing any thing that requires even a modicum of concentration so I thought I'd be wise to get it done early.:cheers:🥳

Have to say this was a really enjoyable one, if only because it was one of those where you really did need to keep one eye on looking after the car, especially with the variable grip from the weather/worn tyres. At the end of S6 I think just about every part of my poor Galant had been bruised to some extent, warning lights for the radiator and engine... if that last service was any shorter it probably would've been a case of crawling to the finish line! :scared:

I had a bit of stuttering for the first stage as well as S5 (when it started raining) so I'd recommend doing dummy runs in alternate conditions if you haven't done so already... and you'll definitely need to do the shakedown for that 3rd tyre set. I went M 1-4, S 5-6 and M for the last 4, even then I was getting a lot of understeer on the last stages of each stint.

Great times as well 👏🏻. Mitsubishi not ready to cede to Ford just yet.

Glad everyone is enjoying the event 😀.

The Mitsubishi's definitely seem strong. Ford's will need to make the most of and get best possible results on the 2 remaining Tarmac events to have a chance of either title I feel as tarmac is the best surface for the Cossie and it's 7 speed gearbox.

I don't quite know how I got to the end of that one. Made an utterly stupid mistake right after the final service, understeering on basically the first corner into a fence post. Completely misjudged the cornering ability on tarmac

Needless to say I struggled through the final bunch of stages with a rather unwell radiator, turbo, and an engine that I was pretty convinced was going to give-up about halfway through the final stage. I looked behind at one point and my 'dust' trail was actually just smoke pouring from my car...

Ah well, onwards and upwards! I'll be pleased if I can still grab a handful of points from this one.

Had a massive off on SS5 I think it was. Lost the ability to steer the right wheel which makes the twisty stages feel very long indeed.

And here we are, post Christmas and round 3 of the 1995 World Rally Championship is complete. Rally Portugal proved itself a formidable foe, the rough tracks turned into water-slides as the weather deteriorated through the event and the long final leg challenged everyone.

Just 20 of the 46 starters saw the finish line in Portugal, but once again we witnessed an incredibly close finish, with @Dreadmed taking P1 in the Mitsubishi, just 7 seconds ahead of @RYAN in the Ford. P3 was taken by @Hasnain282 in the Toyota, 28 seconds back from the winner. @Dreadmed and @RYAN showing their pace for the 2nd rally in a row, proving their championship credentials. Sweden winner @Speedster502 could only manage 11th place in his Ford.

Despite this, it is still Ford showing the most strength, with 5 Ford Escorts inside the top 10. Mitsubishi took their 2nd victory of the season, and Toyota made the podium for the second round in a row. It was a decent showing for Subaru, with more cars reaching the finish and some decent points, 7th and 8th giving them a needed boost.

In the constructors, Ford keep the lead, but Mitsubishi close the gap slight to just 9 points. The gap between Subaru and Toyota stays at 4, but they both look ever more distant to the leaders.

The real 1995 Rally Portugal saw Subaru return to the forefront after the embarrassing triple retirement in Sweden. Carlos Sainz taking victory from Juha Kankkunen, by just 12 seconds. The Toyotas were strong across the first 2 days, Juha and Didier Auriol leading 1-2, with Juha Kankkunen extending comfortably before day 3, to 22 seconds. But with rain forecast and Pirelli holding the tyre advantage over Michelin in wet conditions, Sainz went into the final days running full of confidence and set about clawing back that 22 second deficit. With 1 stage to go and no spare in the car, Sainz left nothing on the table, with a 9 second advantage still precarious. One final scare would come the way of the Subaru man who took a cut which damaged his brake line and had to complete the stage with just the rear brakes working, despite having that handicap for 7km, he still gained time on Kankkunen and won by 12 seconds. Colin McRae made the podium, 3 minutes back, to get his first points on the board as well.

Welcome all the round 4 of the 1995 World Rally Championship, and the 39th Tour de Corse - Rallye de France. We are on tarmac for the entirety of this event, and some of the most demanding tarmac roads you will find anywhere on the WRC. If Finland is the rally of 1000 lakes, Corscia is the rally of 1000 corners. With demanding country roads, ravines precariously placed to the side of extremely narrow roads, twisting and weaving through the Corsican hills. With stints through tight villages and occasional flat out, top gear blasts, expect to be challenged to the extremes. Tyre conservation and getting the car to the finish line will be critical.
Good weather is forecast throughout the rally so the rain tyres shouldn't be needed this round.

Just getting to the end is a major achievement in my eyes. It would feel like a win. May even do a little jig around the coffee table.

I don't expect many survivors in Corsica, good luck everybody this could be a bruising round!
Update: I made it 1 and a half stages 😂

The car isn't too badly damaged but we're going to need a crane with a longer arm than anything available on the island to get it back for New Zealand.

I've made it through the first 4 stages with one only one bum clenching moment that saw me some how riding a rock face rather than it bouncing me completely over to the other side of the road and into the ravine like usual. It caused some damage and I couldn't fix everything in the first service but only had a slightly damaged exhaust for the 3rd and 4th stages. The damage didn't seem to effect the car though, It had the same top speed and as quick acceleration as brand new.

It didn't cost me that much time either and the other stages went fine. I decided to pause as it was getting quite late and I was fairly happy with my starting 4 stages and I didn't want to rush it and bite off more than I can chew.
