WRC Modern Classics S3: Season 2007

Only found out about this at lunchtime so squeezed in an absolute sprint of a run before the timer ran out.
Unfortunately bottled it on the second to last stage (not that I had a good run to bottle) by clipping a wall that jutted out from a barrier, knackered my engine and gave me a puncture all in one. Tried to finish it but I was so far off by the last stage that a DNF just saved me time.

Never fared well with tarmac to be honest so looking forward to Sweden.

Truth be told I'd already written off MC + Sweden as a Citreon win simply because of the high speed sections, I'm hoping (i.e coping) it'll be a bit more equal in Mexico + Portugal...

-------------------------------

Here's the run I recorded earlier on worn mediums, you could see the grip (and my confidence) disappearing in real-time. :P

Wow, that looks like a completely different car than I was driving. You do the setup or get it from elsewhere? All I did was lower the car. Seems I need to do some preparation first.

Nowadays I'd say about 90% are my own tweaks, simply because there weren't any veritable tunes lying around out there when I was driving the Evo for the '01 championship so I had to basically learn what affects what from scratch. That said, I do occasionally pick a tune out (if I can find one) and use that as a baseline if I'm struggling for inspiration.

For that stage in particular I don't believe I adjusted much more than you might've done (lowered height + moderately stiffened springs, adjusted gearing) as well as a 1, 2 clicks of toe out to help with turn in. I did a bit more prep work for the Turini stages as that's where I felt I had the most time to gain/lose, that was very much trial and error on my end. Opening the diff + more neg camber to help it through the tight stuff only to have the front end overloaded and understeer exiting said corners was the main issue I had to dial out.

If memory serves this tuning guide was linked on this site relatively recently, figured I'd reshare it if anyone else here is interested in DIY setups. :)

Jeez, this game is so much tougher than dirt rally. Quite chuffed that I wasn't last after finishing stage 1 in Sweden though.
Some positivity to build on, despite losing my door and my engine has started to howl. Haha

As much as I enjoy this game, it still has a couple very inherent flaws. This is one of them... start of S2, I'm sure there's a road there somewhere but for the life of me I can't see it! (I rolled over a minute into the stage)

As much as I don't want to I'm seriously considering just going with the C4 out of necessity. Like I said before I don't get on with the Focus. Seems even more amplified on snow. Just cant keep it on the road, Its way too loose.

Or maybe to save some sort of face I'll give the Xsara a spin.

Tested the C4 and was still handily trounced by @Dreadmed on the First stage. God knows how further back I'd be if I was driving the Focus...

I like the Focus but the cockpit view is severely hampered with the position of the rollcage which really gets in the way

Better after stage 6, despite a singular roll in stage 4 :boggled:
Finished it, and I rolled in some capacity every time in Lauksjøen  Seriously, that stage can go to you know where :grumpy:

A shame for the puncture on Stage one, ruined everything from the beginning :(

Gonna skip Norway, so Mexico will be the next stop for me

Boahhh game crashed in stage 4. Unfortunate.

I flipped in stage 1, and then whiffed stage 2 because I couldn't see anything (skill issue) - had a really good stage 3 and then was smitten by Odin for 4. Might continue for the stage leaderboards though, lot of fun regardless.

Smitten by Odin... So funny 🤣🤣👍

Great turnout for round 1, and from the turnout it was @Dreadmed who stormed to a narrow victory in the Focus, ahead of the Citroen of @Belgianwaffle . @PickyReptail8 coming home in P3.

Finished my run in Sweden, was fairly pleased with my pace compared to Monte. That was until I saw @Belgianwaffle & @Dreadmed's alien level pace!

Somehow holding 3rd at the moment moment but am 3 minutes off the pace of the top guys 🤯

What a nice battle again with @Dreadmed. This time No headaches about tyre choice: fresh rubber every service! Looking at the analysises, it's obvious we both made some mistakes left and right. But I'm happy to come out on top this time.
Another thing, I noticed by watching them is that in terms of topspeed and acceleration there is not much difference between the Focus and the C4. But that could have to do with the setups maybe.

The next rally is a very difficult one... Snow, but small roads like Mexico or Corsica. Danger lurks around every corner there 😱

Looking back to my days routinely binning it in Dirt Rally, I'd never have thought I'd get to the point of being described as an alien! :D

Even if I'd been mistake-free it would've been neck-and-neck at best, you definitely had the edge here. That said Vargasen seems to be a cursed stage for me, I messed up horribly on the 01' round and I made exactly the same mistakes driving it again this time (F for the spectators at that fiddly right-left jump).

I did a run-down on the cars in the voting thread, the C4 and the Focus are not too far apart in that regard but I would hazard a guess that the C4 gains at least half a second per 45 seconds of full throttle (assuming relatively equal gearing) over the Focus, the Skoda gets dropped a bit more. As you say, it's not massively substantial but it has just enough of an advantage that the top times on the TT leader boards are dominated by it (and why there was a fear this would turn into a C4 cup 😛).

This was the one stage I recorded, rather peculiarly of the 3 passes through this stage it was this run in the snow/mist that ended up being the quickest (a lucky bounce off the ice bank notwithstanding):

I was really impressed with your time in the fog in Lauksjoen ... And expected to be beaten heavily in Ss11 and ss13... This stage is not my cup of tea.
Vargasen has some really big traps (and some wrong notes in my opinion)... How I pray for a mechanism to change the notes somehow 😁

Yesterday evening I also completed the last special stages of the Rally Sweden. A long rally with many high and low points. The speed was surprisingly good in a couple of stages and I actually had fun on the roads that I usually hardly touch in this game. To the guys in the top places: Respect for your combination of speed and consistency. There really is still something to learn!

ugggghhh just suffered a weird glitchy roll on SS3.

Even embarrassingly for me using the C4 I was clearly behind @Dreadmed and @Belgianwaffle the first 3 stages but I would have been happy with 3rd as without practicing I can't keep up with the top pace. The roll just made me quit out at the end of the stage out of protest  I haven't retired yet. I'll see if I can salvage the run tomorrow If I can get back on before 2.30PM

One upped myself here and flipped 5 times in stage 1.
Xsaras long wheelbase just means any snowbank it touches gets it absolutely reamed round and once you're round you very quickly forget which shade of white is the sky and which is the ground. I only realise when the car goes DONK and a door flies off. It's unfortunate I don't have 5 doors.

Feel like Norway could be a tough one! Hadn't quite appreciated how tricky these stages are in comparison to Sweden. Will be interesting to see how many make it to the end

Smooth ride without mistakes until SS7, where I suffered a puncture in the thick fog and lost 90sec :grumpy:

Let‘see if I can keep the motivation high now for the remaining stages.
