Triumph Spitfire Series #2

I suggest that for this Spitfire event, we leave things like announced by watermelonpunch in post1 of this thread, do the races with these rules and afterwoods evaluate them and take conclusions of the evaluation for future series.

I was going to suggest damage be instated as an alternative myself.

I am sure there is a case for that... But again damage in the game is far from perfect either - you get penalised unfairly when someone rams you. My feeling is we signed up for the series the way it is. I'm happy with that. Hope you will stay on board... Even though you'll almost certainly beat me!

I can live with that Turbo. I simply wanted to get that out there.

I just was a little put off because of our conversation in the lobby today. I apologize for that.

The penalty setting & damage settings stand as what they have been set to since the beginning.
Rest assured all restrictions & settings are what they are for very good reasons, and every detail of this race series was carefully considered.

I am now just about firmly settled upon the way to make sure to avoid the invisible car problem for all participants, to ensure a fair, clean, and enjoyable race experience for all.

Race quality: Very High
Mic quality: Disabled

If upon the Vision Check, anyone participating is unable to see another car on the track, in the private Lounge... the race will be moved to the Pub Lobby with the following labels & settings:

Race Quality: High
Mic Quality: Disabled
Room Label: GTP Spitfire Event ONLY
FIXED HOST STATUS

I know it's a backup to the private lounge, but having the public lobby set to fixed ownership is a wee bit dangerous: If the host disconnects, that would mean everyone gets dropped doesn't it?

Apart from that, everything else is grand with me.

I think that the penalty level should be left as Watermelonpunch has indicated.

From my on-line racing experience, the "weak" penalty level is best for fair racing.

It prevents us from taking advantage from going off-line and off-track (like we would if it wasn't there). Sure, sometimes its a bit arbitrary, but we just need to live with this.

And anyway, with the penalty on "weak" you only loose about 3 seconds, so when this happens to me, I just run the rest of the race trying to maintain the 3 second deficit. So by the end of the race if you are still only 3 seconds down, then you had a great race!

As for damage, I find that having the damage on 'low" is only useful in a public lobby where there are some that ram intentionally! So this intentional ramming needs to be penalized. However, in a race series like this Spitfire one, this penalty should not be necessary if we all drive appropriately clean, with only a few mis-adventures. So in this Series, if there is some heavy impact that is more than just a little fender rub, then the offending party should give back the position or advantage if any was obtained.

Respectfully,
GTsail

Yes, I would rather have the race in the private Lounge, for sure.
I don't want to deal with random people joining.
And I sure don't want the case to be that if my connection drops for some reason, the race will be spoiled for all.

However, yesterday we went through MANY steps to try & cure the invisible car problem between 2 people. Both cleared their caches multiple times. Then we all cleared our caches again.
We tried my lounge and Jackargent tried opening his lounge.
We tried re-loading tracks. Reopening the lounge.
I think fixed host status might be the only way for one of the participants to be able to participate when this happens, because their internet connection is just too weak to have a proper connection without fixed host status.

That said, perhaps when race event day arrives, and the vision check is done, with mics disabled, perhaps the problem will not arise, and this won't be an issue.
*cross fingers*

I'm in my lounge running spitfire if anyone cares to join. Will only be on for about 45 min or so.

Just a quicky: IMZIZ and I had a quick 5 lap race in my lounge tonight: Rain was fixed. IMZIZ said there appeared to be no discernible reduction in grip and indeed he was lapping quite happily at least 4 seconds a lap quicker than me. I was a bit more tentative but there was definitely something wrong with the grip. Even off line there was sooooo much more grip than in my previous race.
When IMZIZ joined my lounge, I was doing a 5 lap race on my own with rain not fixed. It was like driving on ice.
I've saved the replay of IMZIZ and I racing and will upload it.

Meanwhile, I'm off to play in Jack's room!

Absoultely confirmed. It was exactly like driving in the dry to me. I was able to be quite agressive without any slippage, and even managed to pull off a little bit of a drift on a couple of corners by force... so my point is that it took work to make the car lose grip. I have driven in the wet when the grip was reduced... so I know the difference. It is as JLawrence reported. The grip is sometimes identical to the dry in a rainy race. This has serious implications.

1st, it won't be fixed for the race... So perhaps this phenomenon doesn't happen when it's non-fixed, as you say? It's just the fixed rain track?
Can I ask you guys what the room settings were when this happened?

Sorry I didn't make practice! Something came up. I also missed Fun Racers. :( :( :(

I did some more racing today and it seemed to all be right on nonfixed with your online settings.

What would you say to me making a race highlight video for one of the upcoming events?

I just sent out the pre-race checklist to all participants signed up for all divisions, by PM.
Please let me know if you did not receive it, by PM.
Respond with any questions or comments, by PM.

If you are planning to attend Division X, Part 1, please confirm this either here, or by PM to elginge / RDAardvark.
Thanks. :D

I'm hoping to get a little more practice in, when I can shoulder my way onto the PS3 here. So I'll send out a PSN message to anyone signed on when I do, and try to post here.

Note: Any photomode or videos are most welcome! (Don't leave it to just me! :D)

Append: I just cleared my PM box, so if you tried to reply & couldn't, just try again. Sorry.

Confirmation... Confirmation... confirmation

I'll be there.

A crusty old bugger called Jack,
Had a devious plan of attack,
To hell with the car,
The planes better by far,
He plans to knock them all out with the flak!

& before you start... I do know what flak is but nothing else rhymed. It's called poetic license.

Nice rhymes Jack! lol:dopey:

There once was man hailing from Florence,
He was blindingly fast,
And his name, it was Lawrence.
In a Spitfire he hit town,
A cloud of dust all around,
He said, "Wanna race?
I'll take you down"

:P

There once was a Bean in a Car,
Some found his driving bizarre.
He swerved so fast,
to stay out of last,
he drove til his tires were a char.

Well, we have quite the limerick crowd here! haha

11th hour... NOT the time to be trying new settings.
Practicing today I wound up driving like a drunken monkey because I got this silly idea to start messing with my ride height.
It's what I call "magical tune thinking"... where you have a good set-up, but then get some silly idea that somehow changing something will bring this magical improvement, so you start changing stuff & wind up making the car undrivable! LOL
I wound up drifting through Jackargent on a hairpin @ Eiger, and repeatedly spinning out on the Circle at Cape Ring North. So I'm going back to the settings I had settled upon, that keep my car settled.

BTW: I think there's a burrow near the pit entrance on Cape Ring North. I swear I saw a badger lurking around at the chicane trying to stop a weasel from swindling rabbits out of their lunch money & toads out of their family heirlooms.
Very nice... very nice...

Tried and failed to enter the poetry competition.
What the hell rhymes with aardvark? :)

I once knew a man named elginge
who, curiously, couldn't spell 'engine'
he hosted a race
right there in his place
and prepared to get PMs of whingin'

May your race go smoothly tonight, all!

Excellent. I'm sitting in the dentist's waiting room and just got.a funny look from the receptionist for laughing out loud.

Love it.

Thanks for your good wishes. I'm getting nervous about the race, strangely not about the dentist.

Now I love driving my spit,
On tarmac rather than grit;
I may not be fast,
Indeed, I'll be last,
Or probably stuck in the pit.

That Melon don't do things by half,
With Topmore she's having a laugh;
The first corner's a %@&?*
The last one's a #@%$&
I'm prepared for an early bath.

LOL
I can't figure out what the bad words are though.
I'm terrible with iambic pentameter & rhyming. haha.

Funny about the dentist. Though I totally understand. Sometimes in online races I get really tight. Of course sometimes it's because I've had too much coffee & tea before a race I think. I sometimes go overboard with the coffee & tea.
Though never as tight as at the dentist. But then, one time, while in the dentist chair, he was explaining to me how numbing works, and he described for me the famous torture scene in a movie I never saw... Marathon Man!! If anyone has seen this movie, you would know that's probably NOT something a dentist should relate to a patient sitting in his chair. HAHA. But then my dentist has rarely caused me any pain... So maybe his familiarity with that movie taught him what NOT to do to patients. haha. I think he did say it was recommended viewing among dentists in school. (Hopefully they all see it as a demonstration of what NOT to do!)

I watched Eiger replay once, and Cape Ring North replay in full twice, yet missed AOK at the finish line all times. Replay really needs a rewind feature badly!

Race 3: Mount TopMore

I had to take a photo of the starting grid, because this is a 1st for me. LOL

that's me getting a most deserved penalty after drafting RDAardvark to Slow-Maker Turn,
failing to brake early enough, and having to steer to avoid hitting him,
thus making an off-road pass grass mowing - highly inappropriate sloppy driving on my part
being 1st on the grid went to my head, & the stress of having the lead for awhile wore me out lol

20110629spitfiredivisionxfun20s.jpg

I never saw jackargent do this in practice either! But it's nice to know I'm not the only one! :embarrassed:(
