Surely this was the best time to do this? Especially when there are question marks over your race seat? Its better to end the year on a high than start well and end badly, it suggests the future is bright.
Look what it did for Fisichella, he now has a very cushy job he would otherwise never have had.

I meant in a way that he has 4 hungry guys behind him and its going to be nigh impossible to not get caught up in the championship contenders race. If he was going to try for a race win this is certainly the hardest time to do it. If this was the start of a season when everyone is laid back it would be much easier to hold the lead because no one in particular would be in a hurry!

I do get your point though about making an impression, its just going to very hard to make his position stick or even worse get caught up in some major incident. Look at what happened to poor Sutil in Monaco when he had a hungry Raikkonen behind him! The dream was over in seconds!

As for Fisichella I think its a tragedy he went over to Ferrari even though he impressed, I would personally prefer to race in a lesser team than to be a test driver, surely as a competitive F1 driver that's what you want. It was also slightly harsh on Force India who just started doing OK and then he left!

Robin.

True, but then that only provides to either maximise the impact of anything he achieves or provide the perfect excuse for any small mistake he makes.
I think Fisichella was reaching the end of his career anyway, I too would have liked to see him stay a season or two more but he was not going to achieve much more. Its nice to see him doing so well in GT2 anyway with Alesi.

Anyway, Hulkenburg has been steadily impressive over the season. This only tops what has been a decent season really, only second to Kobayashi's season for the relative rookies.

I would actually say this season has been one of the best in terms of quality of the drivers. There hasn't been a Piquet Jr spinning every race (though Petrov has tried....he has at least shown some speed.) The "worst" drivers this year have been Petrov, Di Grassi, Liuzzi and Yamamoto but they haven't been that bad really.
Its also probably been the most mistake-filled season ever.

Here is his pole-lap guys.
As I was at work, I missed the quali unfortunately. On the way home I looked at the "news-screen-TV-thingy" in the tram and bham!, Hulkenberg on Pole! I stared at the screen in total dissbelieve, but the man made it! 👍

And I was very impressed with his lap, you could almost feel he was at the asbolute limit, just look how crazy he's working with the wheel.

I must say I didn't think Hulkenberg would get Pole, at least this has shaken up the front of the grid for the first time in quite a while. Let's see if he can hold off both Red Bull cars or even Hamilton at the start of the race.

That's pretty lame - at least he's alright 👍 I wonder if he really was specifically targeted as the article/Mclaren claim though.

McLaren already had to supply armored vehicles for Button and Hamilton.

I don't think Hamilton will want to podium tomorrow, he'll be standing out in the open

Just watched the qualifying on iPlayer...

And wow. When I saw Webber, Vettel, Hamilton and Alonso cross the line and fail to beat Hulkenburg's time I just watched in disbelief.

When he beat his time again by such a large margin (And over a second ahead of Vettel) I just laughed out loud. Pretty amazing. Williams have been creeping up on the top teams for a few races now and I think Hulkenburg has just cemented his place in the team for next season.

I think a race win on his part will be good because the championship leaders won't be able to get the maximum points. This should make it closer between the top drivers in Abu Dhabi.

That depends on how wet and dangerous the track will be, anyway, I'm more baffled than I have ever been, among all drivers in all teams, Hulkenberg was one of the less likely to caught any attention. Congratulations to him and his mechanics and engineers. 👍 I'm rooting for Vettel for today's race, though.

To be honest, I can see him dropping down to third or fourth by the second lap, not that i'm asking for that to happen. I'd like to see him fight to maintain his track position during the early stages of the race.

I'd like him to pull out a gap and show Vettel up. To show him that he's no longer the best young German on the block.

At least, that is what i'd like to happen. In reality I know that the Red Bull is faster than the Williams on a dry circuit and that Hulkenburg will be under pressure for the entire race. I do hope he can hold off the Red Bulls though, it would make a very exciting race.

I really hope that the Red Bulls don't manage to take eachother out at turn one. Webber knows he has to go for it, and Vettel is hardly likely to let Webber through when Alonso is behind them both. If they hit eachother into turn one we may aswell hand the title to Alonso. I want it to go down to Abu Dhabi. I want there to be 3 drivers (One from each of the leading teams) within 5-10 points of eachother, to really make the last race really interesting.

In Q1, 2 and even the early stages of Q3, I thought it was Schumacher that was going to come out and surprise us all, he was right up there until the moment all the cars switched to slicks, at which point he dropped way back down the field.

Yep, Schumi looked pretty competitive until Q3, I wonder if he is really going to improve for the next year, he already outqualified Rosberg, fact which quite shows an admirable improvement over his early season performance.

I thought Schumacher would be in the top five after seeing how well he was doing during the first few minutes of Q3, but I was surprised to see him down in eighth at the end of the session. I guess the change of tyres didn't work out for him.

okay.... well I planned on missing Qualy because it was at 3am local time. DAMN YOU BRAZIL!! why must you provide such interesting and valuable moments to the sport, but be on at such an obscure time? (my rant is over)

The title has been decided at brazil since 2005 (or 06?). As Alonso is the only one who can gain the title now, I hope it goes down to 'Dhabi.

Theoretically, Hulkenburg should be overtaken by the 4 championship contenders by the start of the pit stops. A little wily racecraft from the pole sitter could cause a bit of a stir amoung the other teams, though. If all get through turn 1 in order and unscathed, I predict Vettel, Webber, Hamilton, Alonso, Hulkenburg, and (probably) Massa for the top 6.

On an unrelated note, who do you reckon has cost the most money this year, in terms of crash damage? I think Petrov has cost Renault millions in repair damage/new parts because of his ability to find walls

Well Petrov has crashed in China, Spain, Monaco, Belgium, Japan and South Korea, as well as retiring from a number of races this season. I wouldn't know how much these accidents and problems have cost the team this season.

Regardless of that, is very nice from RBR's part to not interfere directly with the drivers, I honestly hope that Webber or Vettel take the championship, Vettel is the most talented driver, Webber is the most consistent of the fast ones, Red Bull has the best car, what else do you need to be world champion dammit? :P

It really came down to Schumacher not having enough time to get heat into the tires in Q3, for a number of reasons (they sent him out on track a bit too late and the fact that he had to pull off the dry line to let a few cars through who were on hot laps). Oh well, at least he's been showing much more promise in the past couple of races 👍

Looks like the table has turned and now Webber is acting like Alonso when Alonso was teamates with Lewis.

Ooo, look what you did  Now should we classify Mark Webber as being among the biggest cry babies in the sport?

On a more serious note, Mark definitely seems to have a rather deep distrust of the team which we became rather aware of after the front wing incident at Silverstone. I also believe that RB have publicly declared they won't be using team orders (unless Vettel or Webber is mathematically out of contention) simply because Mark is ahead of Vettel in the points, and if the script was flipped I personally believe RBR wouldn't be singing that song, and it's quite possible that Mark is aware of such.

I'm thinking Schumacher is going to be competitive next year, even if he's not like he says he is having fun and with regards to Webber Fans. hehe! :sly: What can I say.

Wow, this thread has almost no one thinking Hulkenberg might actually pull it off tomorrow. All just "wonder how long it'll take for vettel and webber to pass him" and he obviously won't win tomorrow. Vettel won at Monza in 2008, didn't he? Fisichella almost won in 2009, didn't he?

I think people are going off his past track record this season. His best was 6th, and his setup on a greasy track was just perfect. I don't know how he will handle the faster cars around him, but on a full dry track I believe he won't be able to keep the pace
