I don't envy anyone the task of following in Sir Alex Ferguson's footsteps... whoever gets the job will be expected to deliver from Day One, and I seriously doubt that Man Utd will ever get a better manager than Ferguson. I think it's a very wise move to retire now, and the English Premier League will be a poorer place without him. Part of me would like to see Moyes get the job, but it might not be the wisest move for him, given the almost impossibly high standard Ferguson has set for whoever succeeds him...

Thank Christ. Hopefully they get themselves a manager who referees aren't scared of.

I'm hoping mourinho gets the job, moyes isn't the man to take over from sir Alex.

I'm not that sure about Jose anymore. I used think he was the best fit did the club and there's no doubting his ability as a manager but I'm not sure I'd want the baggage he brings not do I think he would stick around for more than 2 or 3 years. I'm not against him but I'm less sure about him than I once was.

Plus, the Chelsea job is open and Benitez has all but told us he'll be there anyway.

Didi Hamman tweeted Juergen Klopp as an outsider; his stock couldn't be higher and with his team being sold bit by bit, now would be a good time to jump ship.

Personally, I'm going for a sensational return for Big Ron. 50/1 outsider? Worth a punt, surely (!)

I agree but who else is there, obviously if moyes gets the job I will and I assume all other united fans will give him our full support. But I think he needs more high level experience, he has very little champions league experience and hasn't won anything at Everton. If not mourinho then maybe dortmunds manager.

He said this on Man united's official website:
"The decision to retire is one that I have thought a great deal about and one that I have not taken lightly. It is the right time.

"It was important to me to leave an organisation in the strongest possible shape and I believe I have done so. The quality of this league winning squad, and the balance of ages within it, bodes well for continued success at the highest level whilst the structure of the youth set-up will ensure that the long-term future of the club remains a bright one.

"Our training facilities are amongst the finest in global sport and our home Old Trafford is rightfully regarded as one of the leading venues in the world.

"Going forward, I am delighted to take on the roles of both Director and Ambassador for the club. With these activities, along with my many other interests, I am looking forward to the future.

"I must pay tribute to my family, their love and support has been essential. My wife Cathy has been the key figure throughout my career, providing a bedrock of both stability and encouragement. Words are not enough to express what this has meant to me.

"As for my players and staff, past and present, I would like to thank them all for a staggering level of professional conduct and dedication that has helped to deliver so many memorable triumphs. Without their contribution the history of this great club would not be as rich.

"In my early years, the backing of the board, and Sir Bobby Charlton in particular, gave me the confidence and time to build a football club, rather than just a football team.

"Over the past decade, the Glazer family have provided me with the platform to manage Manchester United to the best of my ability and I have been extremely fortunate to have worked with a talented and trustworthy Chief Executive in David Gill. I am truly grateful to all of them.

"To the fans, thank you. The support you have provided over the years has been truly humbling. It has been an honour and an enormous privilege to have had the opportunity to lead your club and I have treasured my time as manager of Manchester United."

Although there have been times - in 1989 when it seemed he was going to be sacked, and 2002, when he was about to retire and instead performed a last-minute U-turn - when it was felt Ferguson was ready to leave, this time it is permanent.

Now, Ferguson is left to look back on the power-shift in English football that he has instigated and for the first time in over a quarter of a century, United is on the hunt for a new manager.
David Moyes, out of contract at Everton, and Jose Mourinho, who is expected to leave Real Madrid at the end of the season, are the obvious favourites, although Borussia Dortmund's highly-regarded coach Jürgen Klopp and Bayern Munich's 67-year-old outgoing boss Jupp Heynckes will also come into contention.

It promises to be a major test of nerve for the Glazer family, plus Ed Woodward, who will replace David Gill as chief executive in the off-season.

"Alex has proven time and time again what a fantastic manager he is but he's also a wonderful person," co-chairman Joel Glazer said.

"His determination to succeed and dedication to the club have been truly remarkable.

"I will always cherish the wonderful memories he has given us, like that magical night in Moscow."

Avi Glazer added: "I am delighted to announce that Alex has agreed to stay with the Club as a director.

"His contributions to Manchester United over the last 26 years have been extraordinary and, like all United fans, I want him to be a part of its future."

Ferguson's exit coincides with that of Gill, who hopes to be voted onto UEFA's executive committee in the summer.
"I've had the tremendous pleasure of working very closely with Alex for 16 unforgettable years - through the Treble, the double, countless trophy wins and numerous signings," Gill said.

"We knew that his retirement would come one day and we both have been planning for it by ensuring the quality of the squad and club structures are in first class condition.

"Alex's vision, energy and ability have built teams - both on and off the pitch - that his successor can count on as among the best and most loyal in world sport.

"The way he cares for this club, his staff and for the football family in general is something that I admire. It is a side to him that is often hidden from public view but it is something that I have been privileged to witness in the last 16 years.

"What he has done for this club and for the game in general will never be forgotten.

"It has been the greatest experience of my working life being alongside Alex and a great honour to be able to call him a friend."

Well I don't like the guy, but he was without doubt the best domestic manager we have seen in the Premier League. He didn't do very well internationally, perhaps that's the only flaw in his career.

Personally I think Moyes would be better suited for the job, he seems like a better fit for a club like United than Mourinho.

Shocked that Sir Alex retires!!! :dunce:
But we all knew that day would come, just not so soon.

Don't know what to say...

Hoping for Moyes as manager.

SAF is a legend no matter how you look at it. I'm a big EPL fan, but don't have a favorite team to support but I'll say that it was great following Man U under Fergie. I was really hoping Mourinho would come back to EPL and have mind games with him again but this now opens a door for Mourinho to replace SAF. Could happen, pending Mou leaves Real.

I was reading the other day that CR7 is not coming back to United. And Rafa Benitez said yesterday that Mourinho is already confirmed at the bridge for next season.

The papers and rumors say that, which I have read, just as I read both Mou and CR7 will go to Man U, just as I read both will remain at Real. lol
Sometimes the rumors are true, sometimes they aren't. All we have now is that SAF is retiring and someone is taking over his spot. We will see!!

edit: whoa on Moyes contract already!

So when i picked up my paper this morning, a story on Fergie maybe quitting made it to the front AND back page..and i remember thinking 'it must be happening if its on both the front AND the back!', then i got home turned Sky Sports News on and there it was..and my heart sank!:(

I knew there were rumours around this morning when I left for school but at lunchtime everyone was talking about it so I went on a computer to check and I was just shocked.

A part of me saw it coming, but this still kinda blindsided me lol

This is going to be weird for me because i was born on 15th October 1986 and Fergie was appointed on 6th November 1986!...so all ive known all my life is Fergie as the manager!!

I think its worth pointing out that its only REPORTED that Moyes would take over...nothings confirmed yet and he has only announced his retirement this morning! Id rather they take their time to decide who to take over..

Of the biggest candidates, Klopp is the least likely to get it but probably the one I'd take the most...

Moyes is having a meeting with Kenwright right now...and he is supposed to be at the Chelsea-Spurs game tonight..

Pretty much the same happened to me going to work, in the morning it was a rumour and then by lunch people were telling everyone it was confirmed. Very surprised, I thought he would be there till the end. Mourinho was the first name that popped into my head, he's the only one I could see also doing a long stint but I guess Moyes is pretty much a cert now.

The news coverage is slightly OTT, gosh its like he's died or something :scared:

I was just thinking that!! they have already played that montage with the song 'an impossible dream' playing over it loads of times!! hes retiring, hes not dead!!!

BBC Scotland news is going a bit overboard too...

... still, if and when Fergie does kick the bucket, they'll be able to run the same piece of film and save a bit of license fee payers money.
