I for one am excited to see what a restrictor plate would do on a flat 2.5 mile oval. At least they are trying to make it more entertaining, and they can't get rid of it, purely for its sheer legacy. Its like removing Monaco from F1.

And they say NASCAR isn't an open and accepting sport to all orientations

Plates won't matter at Indy, in any series. This won't create pack racing, because they still can't run side-by-side in the long, flat corners. Indy sure as hell isn't going to modify their course to please 40k fans per year (and falling).

Passing at Indy is a joke because it's impossible to carry more momentum than the car in front of you. There is no second groove at Indy, so you have to drive through the corner right behind the car in front of you, which puts less air on the nose of your car, which slows you down in the corner, which lowers your corner exit speed. By the time you get enough draft from the car in front of you on the long straightaway, you're back to entering turn 1 or turn 3. Reread from the beginning of this paragraph, and repeat 160 times or so.

There is no magic formula to make the racing better at Indy. There is no way to "go back to the good old days of Cup racing at Indy" because there is no such thing as "good old days of Cup racing at Indy." The racing there has always been this way in Cup cars.

The course is not designed for stockcars, just a fact. Its layout as a whole just doesn't suit them that's all. It was always meant for open wheel cars, for Indycar. Just like how open wheel cars wouldn't work at Daytona (albeit that'd be a safety concern more than anything).

So it'll be New Hampshire 2000 all over again?
With out the deaths. And what's wrong Jeff Burton leading every single lap? Oh that was the day!

Basically, I'm all but guaranteed that I'll just be flipping the channel right after the checkered flag.

And?

I do this every week.;)
Quick, somebody loan me US $5 billion so I can buy out NASCAR and prevent anymore boneheaded decisions.
You'd be a great sponsor for that amount.

Sounds like the aero push that had plagued high dowforce NASCAR racing. Oh those where the days!

Isn't acceleration considerably hindered with the restrictor plate? If so, how in the world would that work for Indy? If anything, I'd think it would make any chance of passing worse. Also, as mentioned...New Hampshire 2000. What an exciting race that was. (Sorry, @01GTP )

How. Monaco IS F1, the Brickyawn 400 isn't even on Indy's top 5. It's been a thing for, what, 20 years now? How many have been truly great?

No, I'm serious. I know Gordon's won a bunch and Tony's won a bunch, and that JPM lost one, but aside from that I think NASCAR at Indy, I think "tire shredder" and "overhyped". Indy isn't Daytona, Darlington, Talladega, Atlanta, Charlotte, etc, etc. Hell even Auto Club has upped it's game. I'm with @MustangRyan on this, I don't know if there's a way to make the racing better at Indy. It's NASCAR's party, they can do as they please, but I don't think it'll help.

The best way to make the Cup race better at Indy is to get the Xfinity cars the hell off of the track, so we aren't all reminded how bad the stock cars look there for two days in a row (three days, if you count practice and qualifying).

For giggles, why not try the extreme low downforce setup there? Would that do anything? I mean fundamentally speaking the shear size and flatness of the track isn't suited for stockcars, but there has to be someway to get them around there like Pocono at least. Maybe.

I guess we'll see, I'm not confident the restrictors will do anything, but I guess (now having given it some thought) it'll be interesting to see how it works. Though, restricting the already low-power Xfinity cars isn't exactly a good test bed...they run flat out at Michigan/California for crying out loud. The smart thing to do would be to get Hendrick, SHR and Gibbs to have a mass test at Indy with the restrictor plates.

Oh if only we knew the BS under the surface.

I seemed to miss that in-car back then, when Kurt's car sounded like it was eating itself.

EDIT: Hahahhaa, that U-joint knew who was gonna win and wanted in on it.
